Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are there differences in the stories of the Gospels? Licona turns to Greek classicist Plutarch for an answer, assessing differences that appeared when Plutarch told the same story more than once in his Lives. He suggests the differences in the Gospels often resulted from their authors employing the same compositional devices used by Plutarch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Toronto Gospels The codex consists of 226 leaves, in twenty-nine quires. These are made in the usual Greek manner, with eight leaves in each quire, except the 14th (of six) and 23d (of four), and are numbered in the lower left hand corner of the first recto. The leaves measure cm. 13 by The parchment is not very thin, and the book with its thick board covers makes a stout little volume 8 cmm. In thickness. There is appended to it a group of five quires, four of 7 and one of 6 leaves, or 34 in all, in scribed in a much later hand with the synaxarium and the menology. There are three coarse parchment fly leaves, one at the beginning and two at the end Of the whole, which thus contains 263 parchment leaves. The writing is in single columns, in the gospels of 18 lines. The lines are carefully ruled, the writing depending from the lines. The margins contain the section and canon numbers, and the chapter numbers and titles. There are frequent marginal initials in gold over red. A later hand has added lection numbers and titles and, at the upper right-hand corner of each recto, the name of the evangelist. The manuscript is not dated in the first hand, but a comparison with facsimiles of dated Greek cursives in the Bibliotheque Nationale published by Omont strongly favors a date toward the close of the eleventh century, or early in the twelfth. The hand of the Paris Psalter dated 1070 (bibl. Nat. MS grec 164) closely resembles that of the Toronto manuscript, which must have been written in the same general period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimated to date back to the very early Jesus movement, the lost Gospel known as Q offers a distinct and remarkable picture of Jesus and his significance--and one that differs markedly from that offered by its contemporary, the apostle Paul. Q presents Jesus as a prophetic critic of unbelief and a sage with the wisdom that can transform. In Q, the true meaning of the "kingdom of God" is the fulfillment of a just society through the transformation of the human relationships within it. Though this document has never been found, John Kloppenborg offers a succinct account of why scholars maintain it existed in the first place and demonstrates how they have been able to reconstruct its contents and wording from the two later Gospels that used it as a source: Matthew and Luke. Presented here in its entirety, as developed by the International Q Project, this Gospel reveals a very different portrait of Jesus than in much of the later canonical writings, challenging the way we think of Christian origins and the very nature and mission of Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there evidence to believe the Gospels? The Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, John—are four accounts of Jesus’s life and teachings while on earth. But should we accept them as historically accurate? What evidence is there that the recorded events actually happened? Presenting a case for the historical reliability of the Gospels, New Testament scholar Peter Williams examines evidence from non-Christian sources, assesses how accurately the four biblical accounts reflect the cultural context of their day, compares different accounts of the same events, and looks at how these texts were handed down throughout the centuries. Everyone from the skeptic to the scholar will find powerful arguments in favor of trusting the Gospels as trustworthy accounts of Jesus’s earthly life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Thomas -- found in 1945 -- has been described as "without question the most significant Christian book discovered in modern times." Often Thomas is seen as a special independent witness to the earliest phase of Christianity and as evidence for the now-popular view that this earliest phase was a dynamic time of great variety and diversity. In contrast, Mark Goodacre makes the case that, instead of being an early, independent source, Thomas actually draws on the Synoptic Gospels as source material -- not to provide a clear narrative, but to assemble an enigmatic collection of mysterious, pithy sayings to unnerve and affect the reader. Goodacre supports his argument with illuminating analyses and careful comparisons of Thomas with Matthew and Luke. Watch the trailer:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few works of art better illustrate the splendor of eleventh-century painting than the manuscript often referred to as the “precious gospels” of Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, with its peculiar combination of sophistication and naïveté, its dramatically gesturing figures, and the saturated colors of its densely ornamented surfaces. In The Bernward Gospels, Jennifer Kingsley offers the first interpretive study of the pictorial program of this famed manuscript and considers how the gospel book conditioned contemporary and future viewers to remember the bishop. The codex constructs a complex image of a minister caring for his diocese not only through a life of service but also by means of his exceptional artistic patronage; of a bishop exercising the sacerdotal authority of his office; and of a man fundamentally preoccupied with his own salvation and desire to unite with God through both his sight and touch. Kingsley insightfully demonstrates how this prominent member of the early medieval episcopate presented his role to the saints and to the communities called upon to remember him.
