Book excerpt: Canorus terrestrial foraging habitats, thereby having a greater impact on long term population viability, which is a classic example of well intended management practices failing to protect species due to the absence of adequate knowledge of the specialized habitat needs of amphibians. This study suggests the need for a B. canorus core habitat protection zone that extends 500m from the center of all actively used breeding pools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus (=Bufo) canorus) is a high-elevation species endemic to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and is part of the world-wide amphibian declines phenomenon. The toad is thought to have disappeared from over 50% of its historic range even in seemingly undisturbed areas, and remaining populations appear to be in decline. The causes of the disappearance and decline are unknown, and this poses a particular challenge for management and conservation since there is little understanding on how to ensure the survival of remaining populations. In order to provide information that can be used to inform management and to aid in the conservation of the species, my research on the Yosemite toad consisted of three parts: (1) constructing species distribution models to identify environmental correlates; (2) identifying environmental correlates associated with different habitat patch types; and (3) determining movement patterns and habitat use in the terrestrial environment. In the first study, I used Yosemite toad survey data from over 2,200 sites in the Sierra National Forest in the southern part of the toad's range and related them to 54 environmental variables. I found that the Yosemite toad has a complex relationship with the environment and is correlated with both biophysical and management related variables. In the second study, I looked at 49 consistently occupied sites versus 27 intermittently occupied sites throughout the range of the Yosemite toad and related the two site types separately to 26 environmental variables. I found that the different site types were correlated with different environmental variables. In the third study, I radio-tracked 42 adult Yosemite toads and collected data on their movements and habitat use. I found that toads traveled up to 1.26 kilometers away from breeding sites, and the average distance moved was 275 meters. The toads were often found in burrows and extensively used the terrestrial environment. The results from my research help elucidate the environmental requirements of the Yosemite toad both in and away from breeding sites, and can be used to inform management decisions for protection of the species and its habitat.
Book Synopsis California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern by : Robert C. Thomson
Download or read book California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern written by Robert C. Thomson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important hotspots of herpetological biodiversity in the United States, California is home to many endemic amphibians and reptiles found nowhere else on earth. Many of these taxa have unique ecological and morphological specializations, and their management is an important conservation challenge. Increasing climate change impacts, human development, and extreme drought mean many of these species face an ever-greater risk of extinction. California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern provides an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of knowledge regarding the biology and conservation risks faced by 45 of California’s most sensitive amphibian and reptile species. With the goal of enhancing management based on the best available science, the authors developed a novel set of risk metrics to identify special concern species and the threats they face, including population declines, range size and restrictions, and ecological specializations and niche restrictions. In addition to detailed species accounts, this book provides a quantitative analysis of the conservation status and pressing management issues facing individual species and the state’s amphibian and reptile fauna as a whole. The volume focuses on identifying threats, concrete recommendations for management and recovery, and future research needs. The text is complemented by detailed distribution maps, color photos, and graphs. Written in nontechnical language, California Amphibian and Reptile Species of Special Concern will be a valuable resource to a broad range of users from resource managers, field biologists, and academic herpetologists to students and recreational naturalists. Published in association with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
