Its mission is exploration for commercial opportunities among the 400-odd worlds currently embraced by the conglomerate Corporation. The Jobs also carries freight, passengers, scientists, life support biologicals and whatever on its three-year transit through the Bubble, an empty void in space that allows for near-relativistic speeds. Now the Jobs stumbles upon a gigantic pristine undeniably genuine by gosh alien artifact sitting on its own artificial planet, the first indisputably authentic proof of non-human intelligence. It was here in the Bubble where it shouldnt be, couldnt be. Thats why they call it the Bubble. Dac had to check it out. The situation devolves from the initial euphoria over the find and the possibility of unimaginable riches for all hands, down to the mindless evil of the alien find and Dacs desperate efforts to avoid almost certain and complete destruction of the Jobs. Those well-intentioned efforts backfire at every turn.

Book excerpt: Legacy: Phoenix and the Dark Star is a continuation of the story from Legacy: The Mark of Merlin. In Savannah, Georgia, on Halloween night, the benevolent sorceress Ellen Anderson learns from Andie Cornell (a fifteen-year-old medium) that she had drawn the attention of a sinister wizard from New Orleans who practices an elite type of magic-a type of magic that Ellen has never heard of before. As Ellen puts a plan into motion to defend herself, she meets several individuals who will stand with her when she faces the sinister wizard. Among Ellen's new allies is the eighteen-year-old Seminole shaman and vampire hunter Winona (Winnie) Rivers. Winona and her crew (Riley and Brad) had been sent to Savannah, Georgia to capture and execute two vampires. The two vampires don't feed on humans though; however, Winona has never met a vampire that didn't. When Winona's group, Ellen's group and the two vampires come face to face with one another, Ellen demands irrefutable proof that the two vampires are in fact feeding on humans before she will allow Winona's group to execute them. As a compromise, Winona agrees to let Ellen's group cast the 'Memory Talebearer' spell-a spell that transfers memories from an individual to anyone within range of the spell-on the vampires, and so the two vampires were taken to a secluded location in order to do so. Once there, Winona shares her story about how she had become a vampire hunter. About the Author Gerald Pruett was born and raised in St. Louis. Book Synopsis 'Speak to Me': The Legacy of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon by : Russell Reising
Download or read book 'Speak to Me': The Legacy of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon written by Russell Reising and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endurance of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon on the Billboard Top 100 Chart is legendary, and its continuing sales and ongoing radio airplay ensure its inclusion on almost every conceivable list of rock's greatest albums. This collection of essays provides indispensable studies of the monumental 1973 album from a variety of musical, cultural, literary and social perspectives. The development and change of the songs is considered closely, from the earliest recordings through to the live, filmed performance at London's Earls Court in 1994. The band became almost synonymous with audio-visual innovations, and the performances of the album at live shows were spectacular moments of mass-culture although Roger Waters himself spoke out against such mass spectacles. The band's stage performances of the album serve to illustrate the multifaceted and complicated relationship between modern culture and technology. The album is therefore placed within the context of developments in late 1960s/early 1970s popular music, with particular focus on the use of a variety of segues between tracks which give the album a multidimensional unity that is lacking in Pink Floyd's later concept albums. Beginning with 'Breathe' and culminating in 'Eclipse', a tonal and motivic coherence unifies the structure of this modern song cycle. The album is also considered in the light of modern day 'tribute' bands, with a discussion of the social groups who have the strongest response to the music being elaborated alongside the status of mediated representations and their relation to the 'real' Pink Floyd.

Book Synopsis Legacy Of The General - Part 2 by : T.W. Anderson
Download or read book Legacy Of The General - Part 2 written by T.W. Anderson and published by T.W. Anderson. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LEGACY OF THE GENERAL - Part 2 - A RELUCTANT WHITE KNIGHT novel - Volume 4 Reviewed by the Editorial Board, The Columbia Review of Books & Films “Legacy of the General,” the fourth installment in T.W. Anderson’s “A Reluctant White Knight” series, pulls the hero, Tom Rowter, and his wife, Sunny, into a complicated conflict between powerful forces and launches them on a hazardous mission to fulfill the last wish of an admired friend (the General). Some time ago, when reviewing the first volume in T.W. Anderson’s “A Reluctant White Knight” series, we had this to say: “It combines the best ingredients of the “Texas Rangers” genre fiction, but with highly contemporary suspense, which is further enriched with themes of green energy, aviation and technology. The lead character, Tom Rowter, is a solid anti-hero, a toned-down version of Clint Eastwood at his best. He tells the story in the first person, matter of fact, no hype or showoff (well, maybe a reserved touch of bravado…). He’s cool, aggressive (or even deadly, when necessary), and delivers it all with humor. He clearly has a big heart, which carries a good chunk of pain and guilt, and he can handle a gun. In other words, he’s a good character, someone you would definitely want to spend more time with, literarily speaking.” With the fourth novel in the series, Mr. Anderson maintains the remarkable qualities of his creation, while fleshing out the main characters, expanding the family circle, and revealing new aspects of this evolving saga. “Legacy of the General” picks up a short time after the events of “Seascape’s Aground!” (Vol. 3). The story begins with a few scenes that give the reader—even a new reader—a sure footing in what’s happening in the lives of Tom and Sunny. Meanwhile, a mysterious outfit gears up to take violent action in order to pilfer possession of ‘an item,” which happened to be on its way to Tom posthaste, courtesy of his now-deceased friend. Soon, the suspense rises and bad things start to happen. Mixing in the successful ingredients that made the previous volumes so enjoyable, the author adds in legal wrangling, government conspiracies, IRS and CIA shenanigans, a former U.S. president, and a good measure of sprightly romance and lively action. As before, Tom Rowter, with the conflicted yet incredibly gutsy Sunny, is determined to do the right thing, come hell or high water—or such other bad things as one might expect, either on the ground or in the air. In summary, “Legacy of the General” fulfills the promise of the series, delivering an authentic setting and great action with a lively cast of flesh-and-blood characters, engaged in real-world relationships and embroiled in a risky crisis that gets resolved through the hero’s courage, integrity, and thrilling exploits. The ending, when it comes, is surprising and satisfying. Book Synopsis Laoshi's Legacy: Emergence from Shadow by : Jan Kauskas
Download or read book Laoshi's Legacy: Emergence from Shadow written by Jan Kauskas and published by Via Media Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, I sought to record a few memories and observations gleaned on the way from beginner to senior student. The result was 'Laoshi: Tai Chi, Teachers, and Pursuit of Principle'—a semi-fictional memoir, using the device of dialogue between student and teacher, to examine the agony and elation of sincerely pursuing the art of taiji. The thirty-seven chapters of 'Laoshi' shone light on the various aspects of taiji and martial arts which occupied my thinking as I progressed along the Way. Laoshi, which translates as ‘teacher’ in Mandarin, was the main character of the book and, though not a real person, represented the best aspects of the many martial artists whose skills, dedication, and wisdom inspired me in my attempts to match their example. As a wise and compassionate though sometimes irritable teacher, Laoshi guides his student, the narrator, through many disappointments and false dawns until the student arrives, if not at mastery, then the fertile ground where mastery grows. The present volume, 'Laoshi’s Legacy', takes up where the previous account left off; the student moves beyond his pre-occupation with his own progress to explore the terrain occupied by the teacher. The Way of the teacher, we discover, not only offers insight and reward aplenty, but is every bit as confounding and, often, more treacherous than the path of the student. With the example of my own teachers once again embodied in the character of Laoshi, 'Legacy' describes the challenges encountered in progressing beyond the role of student to survey the art from the viewpoint of teacher. As in the previous volume, Laoshi, the teacher, continues as guide and mentor, advising the novice instructor confronted with the reality of teaching taiji in a modern world. Like its predecessor, 'Legacy' relies heavily on allegory, mirroring the paradoxical nature of life, where truth is often hidden in myth, and deception disguises itself as truth. A touch of poetic licence may stretch the truth a little to accommodate the narrative, but 'Legacy' is a realistic portrayal of dilemmas faced while pursuing the Way of the teacher. READERS' COMMENTS "As the torch of teaching taijiquan is passed to the next generation of teachers, the problems and questions that arise are discussed in Laoshi's Legacy by Jan Kauskas. This book is filled with amusing anecdotes and lessons that Professor Cheng Man-ch'ing taught his students that still resonate today." — MARTIN INN, co-translator of The Essence of T'ai Chi Ch'uan "The nutrient-dense insights in each chapter will make you want to linger and digest, and the unfolding human story will make you want to turn the page for the next exciting episode. Readers may come for the taijiquan lessons and lineage lore, but will stay for the life lessons and wisdom. Literary flair and Scottish wit make it an instructive, inspirational, and irresistible read. Those who read this book without tears, laughter, and lots of a-ha moments are probably not ready for it." DOUGLAS WILE, author of Zheng Manqing's Uncollected Writings "Laoshi's Legacy does not disappoint. Kauskas sagely and engagingly counsels readers in vicarious fashion through the guise of conversations between himself and his teacher (the sagacious Laoshi) in the important nuances of taijiquan philosophy and technique, often addressing with deft candor important real-world issues not found in other popular books. A must-read for all taijiquan teachers and students. — JOHN LOUPOS, author of Tai Chi Connections: Advancing Your Tai Chi Experience “Jan Kauskas . . . writes well and has meditated on the words he presents here. His Laoshi answers all questions and offers stories anecdotes and spiritual knowledge in the Daoist tradition. Readers will benefit from these words . . .” — KENNETH VAN SICKLE, author of Tai Chi Sword and Tai Chi Feather Sword DVD

Download or read book Glitch Feminism written by Legacy Russell and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The divide between the digital and the real world no longer exists: we are connected all the time. How do we find out who we are within this digital era? Where do we create the space to explore our identity? How can we come together and create solidarity? The glitch is often dismissed as an error, a faulty overlaying, but, as Legacy Russell shows, liberation can be found within the fissures between gender, technology and the body that it creates. The glitch offers the opportunity for us to perform and transform ourselves in an infinite variety of identities. In Glitch Feminism, Russell makes a series of radical demands through memoir, art and critical theory, and the work of contemporary artists who have travelled through the glitch in their work. Timely and provocative, Glitch Feminism shows how the error can be a revolution.
