Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Vermont A resurvey of the timber resources in Vermont was made in 1965 and 1966 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 18 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, as in the initial survey, the Northeastern Station received cooperation from the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks. The Department purchased the aerial photographs of the entire state that were used for the re survey and gathered information on the output of timber products. State field crews remeasured initial forest survey plots and established new plots on all State forest land. Personnel of the Green Mountain National Forest car ried out the part of the survey on National forest land. This report summarizes the timber-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial sur vey. Trends in the supply of timber for forest-based indus tries are pointed out and projections of future timber supply are made. In this resurvey, a portion of the initial ground plots was remeasured to provide estimates of net annual timber growth and estimates of land-use change and to update the initial forest inventory volume. New ground plots were established for an independent second estimate. These two sets of estimates were weighted and combined to give the current estimates of forest area and timber volume. Sampling errors, which indicate reliability, are shown for most of the totals of the breakdowns of the new esti mates. Users of these resource data are cautioned to read carefully the definitions of terms and the section pertain ing to the reliability of the estimates in the appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of New Hampshire Field work for the initial survey was done entirely by the staff of the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station; the resurvey was a joint effort with the staff of the White Mountain National Forest. The National Forest personnel assumed responsibility for the resurvey of forest lands under their jurisdiction. The timber -supply outlook for the state and the demands for timber products have changed considerably. This report describes the current forest-land area and timber volumes and important changes or possible trends. Detailed statistical information and definitions of the terms used are presented in an Appendix. Users of the data in this report are cautioned to read with care the precise definitions of the terms used, the description of the forest-survey methods, and the statements pertaining to the reliability of the estimates. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest of the Green Mountain State Forests provide wood and other forest products, watershed protection, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, a setting for recreation, and much more. They have played a major role in the history and culture of Vermont. The early settlers found nearly all of the State covered by forests. The initial clearing of these woodlands was slow as most colonists established small subsistence farms. Forest clearing became widespread around 1800 as Vermont's farmers began supplying food and wool to a rapidly growing nation. The thousands of small farms created a strong agriculture - based economy. The city of Burlington, Vermont, became a major producer of timber during this time. By 1880, only about a third of Vermont remained forested. As early as 1845, George Perkins Marsh warned Vermont farmers about the damage that results from clearing forests. Eventually, those who once assumed that the State's forest resource was unlimited were faced with timber shortages. Soil erosion from farm land increased and silt now muddied creeks that once ran clear. And because of the rapid runoff of storm water, springs that previously flowed year round were dry during the summer. As Vermont's forests diminished, so did once abundant populations of important species of wildlife, for example, the beaver, black bear, white - tailed deer, wild turkey, and wolf. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regional Development of Pulpwood Resources of the Tongass National Forest Alaska The time seems to be ripe for the extensive exploitation of Alaskan pulpwood. The successful operation of pulp and paper mills in near-by British Columbia, which has practically similar timber and power resources and comparable transportation facilities, removes the speculative element from the proposed development. The demand for paper has increased to such an extent that it has become possible for well-organized and adequately financed companies to operate pulp and paper mills on an extensive scale, particularly for making newsprint. Ten years ago the United States produced its entire supply of newsprint. In 1919 two-thirds of it was imported, mostly from Canada; and Canadian supplies are not without limit. All indications point to a continuance of the demand at prices which should make possible profitable operations in Alaska. New sources are imperatively required for the supply of raw pulpwood. This need has already brought mills to the Pacific coast. They were located, first in California, Washington, and Oregon, and then in British Columbia. The same transition has taken place in the lumber industry, and the production of lumber in the Pacific Northwest is increasing steadily. The movement in the pulp industry, however, is necessarily slower, because of the greater investment called for per unit and the very large requirement for power. Furthermore, the pulp industry demands an assured permanent supply of raw material and a proper allocation of water power under stable tenure, both of which requisites are found in the Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska. It is the policy of the Forest Service to sell pulpwood from the National Forests with such provisions for future supply as will assure the permanence of the industry. Advantages Of Regional Development. There is room for a number of mills on the Tongass Forest. When these are in operation, together with the established mills of British Columbia, which are reported to represent an investment of $42,000,000, they will constitute a producing region whose products will have a recognized standing in the world's markets. The development of this region will facilitate the procurement of sales contracts and needed capital, make it possible to attract both skilled and unskilled labor, and, lastly, but by no means of least importance, enable the industry to secure favorable conditions and rates for the transportation of its products. These are prime factors in the success of an operation of any magnitude, and are recognized as such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Resource of Western Montana Changes in the economic importance of species and closer utilization with respect to tree size have both contributed to higher current estimates. Prior to World War II, timber utilization rested heavily on white pine and ponderosa pine. Other species were far less valuable. As a consequence, even the early estimates of white pine volume were very realistic and those of ponderosa pine were not much in error. In contrast, the inventory of other species was at best very rough. Today there are 61 billion board feet of Douglas-fir, western larch, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, and the minor species. This amounts to more than twice the volume of these species reported earlier. Improved inventory techniques have been another major development. Estimates from earlier surveys were based largely on the compilation of public and private cruises, which varied greatly ln objectives and standards. Although Forest Survey made check cruises to adjust estimates to a common standard, the total result could not be statistically evaluated for reliability. Estimates presented in this report are based on greatly improved sampling procedures that reduce the risk of bias. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Resource of Minnesota's Aspen-Birch Unit, 1977 Fieldwork for the 197 7 Minnesota Forest Survey began in July, 1974 and was completed in July, 1978. Reports on the three previous surveys of Minnesota's timber resource are dated 1936, 1953, a'nd 1962. Similar Resource Bulletins containing statistical highlights and detailed tables on the timber resource of the other Survey Units in Minnesota (see cover) are also available. These will provide the basis for a comprehensive analysis of the timber resource of the entire State which will be published as a sepa rate report. More accurate survey information was obtained during the 1977 survey than otherwise would have been feasible because of intensified field sampling made possible by funding and man power provided the North Central Station by the State Legisla ture through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The Department also assisted in a canvass of primary wood using plants in the State, which was used to help estimate the quantity of timber products harvested in Minnesota. Aerial photos used in the Central Hardwood Unit survey were furnished by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the usda Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.
