Book Synopsis Book of the Sphinx by : Willis Goth Regier
Download or read book Book of the Sphinx written by Willis Goth Regier and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sought, the Sphinx seems everywhere, whether the guardian of the pyramids on Egypt's Giza plateau or the beautiful man-eater with a deadly riddle, to be approached with awful caution. The Sphinx, that icon painted, sculpted, engraved, and exalted in poetry, fiction, and music, so impressed the philosopher Hegel that he pronounced the creature “the symbol of the symbolic itself.” With a wealth of illustrations, Book of the Sphinx confirms Hegel's lofty judgment, finding the Sphinx everywhere: in tragedies, paintings, opera, murder mysteries, brothels, bars, and advertisements. Pursuing the Sphinx through kaleidoscopic sightings and encyclopedic observations, Willis Goth Regier plumbs the symbol's mysteries, conducting the reader down ever more perplexing and intriguing paths. Wonderfully readable, his highly idiosyncratic tour of the ages and the arts leads at last to a conception of the Sphinx that embraces nothing less than all that is unknowable—proving once again that confronting a Sphinx is one of the most dangerous and exhilarating adventures of the imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Azure-colored oceans blending into bright turquoise at the shores, undulating hills of green surrounding crystal clear lakes, and rolling sand dunes brushed with light blueman-made monuments that have withstood the march of time from the pyramids to Hadrians Wall--are rich memories of Ellen and Stephen Williams adventures. Eating "brik" in Tunisia and "churchkhela" in Tblisi! Drinking "kvas" in Ukraine! Passing up "lavabread" in Walesall were adventures that nearly didn't happen. Ellen did not want to leave her comfortable home in Texas. Content with their rural life but forced to relocate due to her husbands job she reluctantly began her move to Germany. She was a foot-dragging-don't-want-to-move-wife. Determined to make the best of a challenging situation she and her husband soon embarked on a plan--to experience as much of the region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea as possible. Within months Ellen and Stephen developed a passion for touring. Faced with language barriers, clashes of culture and cuisine they followed their plan with a vengeance visiting over 30 countries in the space of three years. Their frequent trips within a short period of time gave them a unique overview of the region. They could spot historical and cultural linkages between people and their respective countries. They saw the crossovers and mingling of traditions and languages. Soon they became the consummate travelers. Many friends began asking for recommendations of their favorite locale. Chronicled here are their adventures, misadventures, faux pas and joys as they grow from fledgling sightseers to consummate travelers. Journey with them as they realized the more you discover about other people and cultures, the more you ultimately learn about yourself. After reading the book perhaps you, too, will also learn to say in French "Bon Voyage," in Spanish "Buen Viaje," and in German "Gute Reiser"In short, Happy Travels!
Book Synopsis Forms of Astonishment by : Richard Buxton
Download or read book Forms of Astonishment written by Richard Buxton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this illustrated study Richard Buxton analyses Greek literary narratives and visual representations of the metamorphosis of humans and gods, as evidenced from Homer to Nonnos. Such tales have become familiar in their Ovidian dress, as in the best-selling translation by Ted Hughes; Buxton explores their Greek antecedents. He investigates such issues as: How do different contexts shape the way in which metamorphosis is narrated? How do the assumptions of commentators about 'strangeness' affect how metamorphosis is interpreted? How far should an interpreter allow 'contextual charity' to render more acceptable a belief such as that in metamorphosis? What are the implications of the notions of 'astonishment' (Greek: thambos) in a range of narratives about transformation? Throughout Forms of Astonishment Buxton draws comparisons between the Greek evidence and data from other religious traditions, ancient and modern; he also introduces comparative material from the sciences, from modern painting and literature, and from the cinema and computer graphics. In investigating metamorphoses of gods Buxton revisits the concept of anthropomorphism, arguing that the fact that Greek divinities were believed to change shape does not undermine the fundamentally humanlike form of Greek divinity. He also examines certain strands of Greek tradition, particularly among the philosophers, which called metamorphosis into question, whether in relation to the gods or to humans. Individual chapters deal with transformations into the landscape and into plants or trees—in the latter case transformation stories are set against a background of cultural beliefs about 'seminal' substances such as blood and tears. Overall, Forms of Astonishment raises issues relevant to an understanding of broad aspects of Greek culture, and illuminates issues explored by anthropologists and students of religion.

Download or read book Crossing Paths written by John Daverio and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Crossing Paths, John Daverio explores the connections between art and life in the works of three giants of musical romanticism. Drawing on contemporary critical theory and a wide variety of nineteenth-century sources, he considers topics including Schubert and Schumann's uncanny ability to evoke memory in music, the supposed cryptographic practices of Schumann and Brahms, and the allure of the Hungarian Gypsy style for Brahms and others in the Schumann circle. The book offers a fresh perspective on the music of these composers, including a comprehensive discussion of the 19th century practice of cryptography, a debunking of the myth that Schumann and Brahms planted codes for "Clara Schumann" throughout their works, and attention to the late works of Schumann not as evidence of the composer's descent into madness but as inspiration for his successors. Daverio portrays the book's three key players as musical storytellers, each in his own way simulating the structure of lived experience in works of art. As an intimate study of three composers that combines cultural history and literary criticism with deep musicological understanding, Crossing Paths is a rich exploration of memory, the re-creation of artistic tradition, and the value of artistic influence.
