Book Synopsis Ten Thousand Years of Cultivation at Kuk Swamp in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea by : Jack Golson
Download or read book Ten Thousand Years of Cultivation at Kuk Swamp in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea written by Jack Golson and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuk is a settlement at c. 1600 m altitude in the upper Wahgi Valley of the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, near Mount Hagen, the provincial capital. The site forms part of the highland spine that runs for more than 2500 km from the western head of the island of New Guinea to the end of its eastern tail. Until the early 1930s, when the region was first explored by European outsiders, it was thought to be a single, uninhabited mountain chain. Instead, it was found to be a complex area of valleys and basins inhabited by large populations of people and pigs, supported by the intensive cultivation of the tropical American sweet potato on the slopes above swampy valley bottoms. With the end of World War II, the area, with others, became a focus for the development of coffee and tea plantations, of which the establishment of Kuk Research Station was a result. Large-scale drainage of the swamps produced abundant evidence in the form of stone axes and preserved wooden digging sticks and spades for their past use in cultivation. Investigations in 1966 at a tea plantation in the upper Wahgi Valley by a small team from The Australian National University yielded a date of over 2000 years ago for a wooden stick collected from the bottom of a prehistoric ditch. The establishment of Kuk Research Station a few kilometres away shortly afterwards provided an ideal opportunity for a research project.

He may seem like an ordinary eleven-year-old boy, but he's actually more than a thousand years old--and remembers the last Viking invasion of England, not to mention the French Revolution and both World Wars. Way back in the tenth century, he and his mother were given the alchemical secret to eternal life. But when everything Alfie knows is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world intrudes, he must embark on a mission--along with friends Aidan and Roxy--to find a way to reverse the process and grow up like a regular boy. This astonishing new novel from the author of Time Traveling with a Hamster, told in alternating perspectives by Alfie and Aidan, is a tour de force--a sweeping epic that takes you on an unforgettable, breathtaking adventure and asks big questions about the meaning of life.

Book Synopsis After the Thousand Years by : J. Webb Mealy
Download or read book After the Thousand Years written by J. Webb Mealy and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh and highly illuminating approach to what is perhaps the most difficult chapter in the most difficult book of the New Testament. Mealy employs a carefully developed methodology which draws fully on the special literary techniques of Revelation, particularly its extensive use of internal cross-references, multivalent images and symbols, and complex Old Testament reminiscences. With its central thesis that Revelation 20.7-10 and 20.11-15 offer parallel representations of the resurrection and final judgment of the unrepentant, this study is destined to become a benchmark for future discussions not only of the millennium, but of the literary workings of Revelation as a whole.

Book Synopsis Two Thousand Years of Jewish Life in Morocco by : Haïm Zafrani
Download or read book Two Thousand Years of Jewish Life in Morocco written by Haïm Zafrani and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of the Jewish community of Morocco are buried in history, but they date back to ancient times, and perhaps to the biblical period. The first Jews in the country migrated there from Israel. Over the centuries, their numbers were increased by converts and then by Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal. After the Muslim conquest, Morocco's Jews, as "people of the book," had dhimmi status, which entailed many restrictions but allowed them to exercise their religion freely. In the mellahs (Jewish quarters) of Morocco's cities and towns, and in the mountainous rural areas, a distinct Jewish culture developed and thrived, unquestionably traditional and Orthodox, yet unique because of the many areas in which it assimilated elements of the local culture and lifestyle, making them its own as it did so. Most of Morocco's Jews settled in Israel after 1948, and many others went to other countries. Wherever they went, their rich cultural heritage went with them, as exemplified by the Maimuna festival, just after Passover, which is now a major occasion on the Israeli calender.
Download or read book King of Fish written by David Montgomery and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The salmon that symbolize the Pacific Northwest's natural splendor are now threatened with extinction across much of their ancestral range. In studying the natural and human forces that shape the rivers and mountains of that region, geologist David Montgomery has learned to see the evolution and near-extinction of the salmon as a story of changing landscapes. Montgomery shows how a succession of historical experiences -first in the United Kingdom, then in New England, and now in the Pacific Northwest -repeat a disheartening story in which overfishing and sweeping changes to rivers and seas render the world inhospitable to salmon. In King of Fish , Montgomery traces the human impacts on salmon over the last thousand years and examines the implications both for salmon recovery efforts and for the more general problem of human impacts on the natural world. What does it say for the long-term prospects of the world's many endangered species if one of the most prosperous regions of the richest country on earth cannot accommodate its icon species? All too aware of the possible bleak outcome for the salmon, King of Fish concludes with provocative recommendations for reinventing the ways in which we make environmental decisions about land, water, and fish.

Download or read book Being and Logos written by John Sallis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being and Logos is... a philosophical adventure of rare inspiration.... Its power to illuminate the text..., its ecumenicity of inspiration, its methodological rigor, its originality, and its philosophical profundity--all together make it one of the few philosophical interpretations that the philosopher will want to re-read along with the dialogues themselves. A superadded gift is the author's prose, which is a model of lucidity and grace. --International Philosophical Quarterly Being and Logos is highly recommended for those who wish to learn how a thoughtful scholar approaches Platonic dialogues as well as for those who wish to consider a serious discussion of some basic themes in the dialogues. --The Academic Reviewer
