Book Synopsis Ethnopsychiatry by : Henri F. Ellenberger
Download or read book Ethnopsychiatry written by Henri F. Ellenberger and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between culture and mental health? Is mental illness universal? Are symptoms of mental disorders different across social groups? In the late 1960s these questions gave rise to a groundbreaking series of articles written by the psychiatrist Henri Ellenberger, who would go on to publish The Discovery of the Unconscious: The History and Evolution of Dynamic Psychiatry in 1970. Fifty years later they are presented for the first time in English translation, introduced by historian of science Emmanuel Delille. Ethnopsychiatry explores one of the most controversial subjects in psychiatric research: the role of culture in mental health. In his articles Ellenberger addressed the complex clinical and theoretical problems of cultural specificity in mental illness, collective psychoses, differentiations within cultural groups, and biocultural interactions. He was especially attuned to the correlations between rapid cultural transformations in postwar society, urbanization, and the frequency of mental illness. Ellenberger drew from a vast and varied primary and secondary literature in several languages, as well as from his own findings in clinical practice, which included work with indigenous peoples. In analyzing Ellenberger's contributions Delille unveils the transnational and interdisciplinary origins of transcultural psychiatry, which grew out of knowledge networks that crisscrossed the globe. The book has a rich selection of appendices, including Ellenberger's lecture notes on a case of peyote addiction and his correspondence with anthropologist and psychoanalyst Georges Devereux. These original essays, and their masterful contextualization, provide a compelling introduction to the foundations of transcultural psychiatry and one of its most distinguished and prolific researchers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ment of mental retardation as in the young human. These two facts together suggest that the disrup tion of brain protein synthesis by high phenylala mine levels in infants may account for the mental retardation observed later in these children. Much work remains to be done to confi~m this possibility. However, it is clear from the review and research described by Waisman that neurochemis try has the tools that will lead to an understand ing of - and therefore perhaps control of - these inborn errors of metabolism which otherwise can lead to lifetimes of personal tragedy for the af fected persons and their families. The final section of these Proceedings deals with neurochemical processes which occur during brief behavioral experiences, particularly learn ing. The reported research has been motivated by the search for processes which underlie the encoding of memory, although the identification of these processes is not yet certain in the various studies. Geller and Jarvik begin with a discussion of short term and long term memory storage processes, and describe the induction of retrograde amnesia by various agents as evidence for these processes.

Book Synopsis The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Positive Psychology by : Nicholas J. L. Brown
Download or read book The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Positive Psychology written by Nicholas J. L. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the twenty-first century, the field of positive psychology has sought to implement a science of human flourishing so that we may lead happier, more fulfilling lives. It has found expression not only in academic papers but also popular books and, increasingly, in government policy. The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Positive Psychology is the first volume dedicated to a critical appraisal of this influential but controversial field of study. The book critically examines not only the scientific foundations of positive psychology, but also the sociocultural and political tenets on which the field rests. It evaluates the current field of knowledge and practice, and includes chapters analysing the methodological constructs of the field, as well as others that question what positive psychology actually means by ideas such as happiness or well-being. Taking the debate further, the book then discusses how positive psychology can be applied in a wider variety of settings than is presently the case, helping communities and individuals by acknowledging the reality of people’s lives rather than adhering strictly to debateable theoretical constructs. Including contributions from disciplines ranging from psychoanalysis to existential therapy, theology to philosophy, and contributors from throughout the world, The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Positive Psychology will be enlightening reading for anyone interested in how psychology has sought to understand human well-being.

Book Synopsis Psychology and the Developing World by : Stuart C. Carr
Download or read book Psychology and the Developing World written by Stuart C. Carr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous leading commentators on the development of psychology in the Third World have conceived of three major stages: an attempt to assimilate Western psychology, with predictably negative results; the study of indigenous constructs, with more relevant applications; and, finally, transcending stage one and stage two to choose theories and methods on their applied merit alone. Psychology and the Developing World has been assembled to document how close psychology has come to researching that stage. Contributors were carefully selected to provide a unique overview of the latest applications of the discipline as a whole. Their work reveals how psychology is being applied to educational needs, management needs, and health needs. This book shows how development studies and allied disciplines cannot ignore psychology's potential for the Third World.
