Wedin presents a new interpretation of Parmenides' Way of Truth: the most important philosophical treatise before the work of Plato and Aristotle. The Way of Truth contains the first extended philosophical argument in the western tradition—an argument which decrees that there can be no motion, change, growth, coming to be, or destruction; and indeed that there can be only one thing. These severe metaphysical theses are established by a series of deductions and these deductions in turn rest on an even more fundamental claim, namely, the claim that it is impossible that there be something that is not. This claim is itself established by a deduction that Wedin calls the Governing Deduction. Wedin offers a rigorous reconstruction of the Governing Deduction and shows how it is used in the arguments that establish Parmenides' severe metaphysical theses (what Wedin calls the Corollaries of the Governing Deduction). He also provides successful answers to most commentators who find Parmenides' arguments to be shot through with logical fallacies. Finally, Wedin turns to what is currently the fashionable reading of Parmenides, according to which he falls squarely in the tradition of the Ionian natural philosophers. He argues that the arguments for the Ionian Interpretation fail badly. Thus, we must simply determine where Parmenides' argument runs, and here there is no substitute for rigorous logical reconstruction. On this count, as our reconstructions make clear, the argument of the Way of Truth leads to a Parmenides who is indeed a severe arbiter of philosophical discourse and who brings to a precipitous halt the entire enterprise of natural explanation in the Ionian tradition.

Michel Albert, the author of this classification, gave the key-word in his book Capitalism against Capitalism. The papers of this book can help to clarify this debate by giving a first hand introduction to some of the main economic thinkers of capitalism.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, a novel radio frequency based position location concept is proposed and studied, which provides accurate position estimates in dense multipath and non-line-of-sight propagation environments. The main idea is to apply the location fingerprinting paradigm of position location to channel impulse responses with ultra-wide bandwidth. The large bandwidth enables a fine temporal resolution of the multipath propagation channel, which in turn acts as a unique location fingerprint of the positions of transmitter and receiver. At first a location fingerprinting framework is developed from a communication theoretic perspective. Then location fingerprinting with two ultra-wideband receiver structures is studied. The first receiver is able to perform channel estimation and the second receiver is a low complexity generalized energy detection receiver. Their position location performance is analyzed theoretically and experimentally with measured data and it is shown that decimeter accuracy is achievable with both receiver structures in dense multipath and non-line-of-sight propagation environments. However, this experimental performance analysis reveals also a major shortcoming of the proposed method: In order to achieve high position location accuracy, a large amount of training data is required. In order to increase the efficiency of the training phase two promising techniques are proposed in this thesis. The first method is based on the idea of joint localization and training. The second technique is based on a geometrical channel model and utilizes a priori knowledge about the geometry of the propagation environment The thesis concludes with a summary of the major findings and with a list of interesting future research topics in the field of location fingerprinting for ultra-wideband systems.

Evgeny Dobrenko, a leading expert on Soviet literature, argues instead--and offers persuasive evidence--that the aesthetic theories underpinning Socialist Realism arose among the writers themselves, born of their proponents' desire for power in the realm of literary policymaking. Accordingly, Dobrenko closely considers the evolution of these theories, deciphering the power relations and social conditions that helped to shape them. In chapters on Proletkult, RAPP, LEF, and Pereval, Dobrenko reexamines the theories generated by these major Marxist literary groupings of the early Soviet Union. He shows how each approached the problems of literature's response to the presumed social mandate of the young communist society, and how Socialist Realism emerged as a conglomerate of these earlier, revolutionary theories. With extensive and detailed reference to supporting testimony and documents, Dobrenko clearly demonstrates how Socialist Realism was created from within the revolutionary culture, and how this culture and its disciples fully participated in this creative process. His work represents a major breakthrough in our current understanding of the complex sources that contributed to early Soviet culture.
