Book Synopsis The Great Migrator by : Hiroko Ikegami
Download or read book The Great Migrator written by Hiroko Ikegami and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other writers, who have viewed the export of American art during the 1950s and 1960s as another form of Cold War propagandizing (and famous American artists as cultural imperialists), Ikegami sees the global rise of American art as a cross-cultural phenomenon in which each art community Rauschenberg visited was searching in different ways for cultural and artistic identity in the midst of Americanization. Rauschenberg's travels and collaborations established a new kind of transnational network for the postwar art world---prefiguring the globalization of art before the era of globalization. --

Book excerpt: Misch Kohn: Beyond the Tradition is the first comprehensive study of one of the most significant master printmakers of the modern era. Hailed as a pioneer for "breaking the shackles of conventionality," Kohn has been lauded for reinvigorating printmaking in post-war America. Now, for the first time, this book brings together work from all six decades of his artistic career. This book chronicles sixty years of Kohn's prints, from the early W. P. A. lithographs through the startlingly evocative wood engravings of the 1950s, the technical innovations with etching and serigraphy of the 1960s, and his "all media" works of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. An essay about his life and analysis of his work is complemented by numerous illustrations and the first catalogue raisonne of the prints.

Download or read book June Wayne, the Art of Everything written by Robert P. Conway and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since her first solo exhibition in 1935 at the age of seventeen, June Wayne has achieved legendary status among twentieth-century American artists. Best known today for her work in and influence on printmaking and fine-art lithography, one of her most renowned achievements was the founding of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1959. Under her direction, this workshop became one of the most important focal points of a general revival of printmaking in the United States - a revival that gave many other famous artists, including Willem de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, and Ed Ruscha, an opportunity to experiment in this format. Her own spectacular prints earned her the estimable title the incontestable pioneer of contemporary lithography. But Wayne's artistic accomplishments are even richer than that. Throughout her career, she boldly explored a variety of media and aesthetic concepts.

Book Synopsis Time Dust, James Rosenquist by : Constance White Glenn
Download or read book Time Dust, James Rosenquist written by Constance White Glenn and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Rosenquist is an internationally renowned artist who first achieved wide recognition as a result of his pioneering contributions to Pop Art in the 1960s and 1970s. Like many artists of his circle, particularly Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Rosenquist has been fascinated with the visual language and ephemera of mass-reproduction. In Rosenquist's case, his interest was manifested in an art derived from popular imagery sources yet committed to the expression of his personal concerns as an artist and a printmaker. He has tested the limits of the medium in order to achieve, on the one hand, subtle nuances unique to particular techniques, and, on the other, the vast billboard scale that is his signature style. This book traces Rosenquist's entire career, from his early work as a sign painter to the creation of what is thought to be the world's largest print, Time Dust, completed in 1992. An important historical text by Constance Glenn explores such contemporary issues as the role of the mass-media, the appropriation of its techniques and imagery, and the origin and demand for multiple images, as well as presenting in depth the artist's evolution as painter and printmaker. The 150 colorplates include - in addition to landmark paintings - numerous examples of previously unpublished sketches and prints, as well as many of Rosenquist's famous works, such as the great installation print F-111. The book includes a catalogue raisonne of the artist's 229 prints and an extensive bibliography.

Download or read book Vija Celmins written by Ian Alteveer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful catalogue that accompanies the critically-acclaimed exhibition currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum Best known for her striking drawings of ocean surfaces, begun in 1968 and revisited over many years both in drawings and paintings, Vija Celmins (b. 1938) has been creating exquisitely detailed renderings of natural imagery for more than five decades. The oceans were followed by desert floors and night skies--all subjects in which vast, expansive distances are distilled into luminous, meticulous, and mesmerizing small-scale artworks. For Celmins, this obsessive "redescribing" of the world is a way to understand human consciousness in relation to lived experience. The first major publication on the artist in twenty years, this comprehensive and lavishly illustrated volume explores the full range of Celmins's work produced since the 1960s--drawings and paintings as well as sculpture and prints. Scholarly essays, a narrative chronology, and a selection of excerpts from interviews with the artist illuminate her methods and techniques; survey her early years in Los Angeles, where she was part of a circle that included James Turrell and Ken Price; and trace the development of her work after she moved to New York City and befriended figures such as Robert Gober and Richard Serra.
