Book Synopsis A Century of East African Integration by : Claire A. Amuhaya
Download or read book A Century of East African Integration written by Claire A. Amuhaya and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive analysis of regional integration in East Africa in the last century, reflecting the general trends of integration processes in the East Africa sub-region with a focus on the East African Community. Particular attention is paid to the cyclicality of integration dynamics, as well as the analysis of the interconnection and competition between different regional organizations in East Africa. In this context, the specificity of the so-called overlapping membership of African states in regional organizations with similar roles but conflicting treaties and mandates is explored. This situation to a certain extent affects the relations of states in the region with external actors specifically trade negotiations with EU that the book comprehensively analyses. This book therefore offers a deeper understanding of the processes of regional integration in East Africa that had been missed before, which reflects the general integration dynamics on the African continent.

Book Synopsis Africa and Preferential Trade by : Richard E. Mshomba
Download or read book Africa and Preferential Trade written by Richard E. Mshomba and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements are a defining feature of the relationship between developed and developing countries dating back to the colonial era. In the late 1950s, these arrangements started to take a multilateral form when members of the European Economic Community established special trade arrangements with their colonies. Since then, several trade arrangements have featured African countries among the preference-receiving countries. Yet it is not always clear how preferential these arrangements are and whether they in fact help African countries or instead lead them to perpetual dependence on specific markets and products. Richard E. Mshomba carefully examines the history of these programs and their salient features. He analyzes negotiations between the EU and African countries to form Economic Partnership Agreements. Nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements are often unpredictable, since the duration and magnitude of preferences are at the discretion of the preference-giving countries. However, when used in conjunction with other development programs and with laws and regulations that encourage long-term investment and protect employees, they can increase economic opportunities and foster human development. This book recognizes the potential impact of nonreciprocal preferential trade arrangements and provides recommendations to increase their viability.

The countries of Africa have not only recognised the need for international assistance, but also the need for self-help along with various collective efforts in tackling the problems of development. The principal concern of Economic Development in Africa is with the contributions of the international environment to the development process in Africa. It considers efforts conceived within bilateral, multilateral and regional frameworks, acting as an introduction to the economic and political dimensions of these approaches. This specially commissioned collection brings together a number of scholars working in the field of International Relations with specialist interest in Africa.
