Book excerpt: Author James Baldwin once said, "A journey is called that because you cannot know what you will discover on the journey, what you will do, what you will find, or what you find will do to you." In A Thin Line Between Love and Hate: A Black Man's Journey Through Life and the CIA, Darryl Lansey takes readers on a journey from his childhood growing up in a working class Black family in Baltimore, Maryland to the secretive halls of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). During his more than 30 years with CIA, Darryl traveled the world collecting and analyzing secret information in support of six presidents' administrations from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump. Darryl describes his tenure with CIA as a "strange love affair." He loved the Agency and the work of trying to keep the United States safe from its enemies. Yet, he also describes the mental and physical pain he endured that stood in contrast to his loyalty to his country, as CIA's deeply rooted systemic racism and its white managers repeatedly thwarted his career aspirations. Despite the personal hurdles he faced, Darryl worked throughout his career to transform CIA's diversity and inclusion and leadership cultures for the better, so future generations of employees are able to thrive.

Book excerpt: A collection of poetry for the hopeless romantic in all of us. Each poem reflects love at first sight, the ache of love, and forever lasting love. Do you wonder why some people don't understand what other people need, especially those they profess to love? It's amazing how rampant neglect is. It's not being greedy or spoiled, the need for communication and attention. Attention costs nothing. Not spending money on flowers but if you see one, pick it, and bring it home. A look and a touch are simple. A few words go a long way. People wonder why the other person gets disinterested. It blossoms at the start, but then dies when we get too busy with our lives. We chose to love that person because we want them in our lives. The newness, fluttering heart, their voice, and laugh, we must appreciate it and encourage it. We get too busy and too lazy and then when it is gone, we wonder why. Love needs nurturing. It doesn't sustain itself. Reading this collection will inspire those to reflect on their own journey of love and relive those passionate moments in time.

Book excerpt: February 14th and my wife is looking at me with hope in her eyes. She has just given me a card and a bottle of my favourite drink so I presume she is hoping for something similar in return. I have nothing but the shovel I'm hiding behind my back. Valentine's Day is a joke. A day made up, no doubt, by people who sell cards and flowers. A way of conning us out of our money as we feel duty bound to "prove our love" for one another. Well this collection is not about proving love. This collection of stories is all about sour, bloody violent love. They say love hurts. They're not wrong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Mafia Royals series… One of the first rules they give you when you're undercover—never fall for the enemy. I didn't just fall for the enemy. I became what I was supposed to hate. What's worse: I fell in love with one. I live a double life, and both sides know it's only a matter of time before I'm forced to choose. Rebirth through mafia blood. Or death at the hands of the very government I swore to protect. I have one more job before my time's up. I just wish it was anything but babysitting a mafia princess who's half my size but knows how to pack such a brutal punch I worry about my ability to have children. Tin's small but terrifying. And I'm her new bodyguard while we all go on a much-needed vacation. I just have to stick to the plan. And remember rule number one. And stop kissing her. **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.** Reviews for Mafia King: “I knew when I read the blurb I couldn't wait to read it and it did not disappoint in the least. This was so good! I'd definitely recommend it.” - Give Me All the Books “Love me some Mafia Royal. Rachel Van Dyken has done it again! 5 star and a must read!” - Reads to Breathe “This is a well written flawless fast paced story, which is filled with angst, secrets, loyalty, engaging and relatable characters, and love, which all leads to a steamy and enjoyable all-consuming read.” - Wendy’s Book Blog “For a novella there was a lot packed into these pages. I never tire of these five families!” - Mom’s Guilty Pleasure “This novella is filled with love, friendships, angst, twists, secrets and humour and I am certain that like me, you’ll not want to put this story down once you’ve started reading it.” - Literary Lust

There are times when we stop to wonder where it ever came from, other times we just think that people were born hateful but I believe that hate is a choice. It is within all of us to love all man and be at peace with all as much as it is possible but there comes a point a line when our experiences forces us to make a choice between love and hate. I have seen many people cross the thin line from love to hate and I have seen the destruction. I hope you will find your self with enough love that you will never cross the line.

Book excerpt: The Complete Hate is a three-volume set that includes the original 1990-1998 30-issue run, the nine subsequent Hate Annuals, and tons of other Hate-related comics, illustrations, and ephemera created for books, magazines, comics, toys, and other merchandise. Bagge combined his cartoony drawing style with uncomfortably real Gen X characters, and the comic books resonated with readers. Book One (Hate 1-15), focuses on young Buddy Bradley's travails in early 1990s Seattle. Book Two focuses on Buddy and his girlfriend Lisa Leavenworth's move back to Buddy's native New Jersey (and a switch from black-and-white to full color). Book Three features the final arc of Bagge's magnum opus, as Buddy and Lisa become parents (and buy a garbage dump).

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. Book excerpt: Fresh out of a failed engagement, Olivia Hales is in dire need of a fresh start. Tired of being the charming and accommodating girl that always gets stomped on, she’s determined to change her outlook on life. When she finds her dream job in a small town in California, she thinks she’s finally found her place in life. That is, until she meets her new neighbor. Roman Banks. Moody. Foul-mouthed. Jerk. And the hottest man on the planet. At a sprawling six foot five, he was coldly distant and physically intimidating. Not only was her new neighbor a God that was good with his hands, he was also a grade-A jerk. Trapped on the same street, sharing the same space together, they’ve become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous, never-ending game of insults and pranks that result in the destruction of two perfectly good homes. The tension between them is as thick as the walls of their houses are thin. Roman’s touch burned like fire even when his words were ice, and both of them will stop at nothing to make the others life hell. In the midst of the pranks and the hate they harbor for each other, Olivia slowly pulls back the layers of the man next door and finds herself consumed with wanting to fix him and his past. When both enemies start to catch feelings for each other, Olivia finds herself hiding her own secrets, not wanting to lose another man in her life. Lines are drawn. Strict rules put into place. But that doesn’t stop Olivia from wanting to save the quiet, broody man next door. They say you’re supposed to love thy neighbor, but that was the furthest emotion she felt when thinking about Roman. Hate was all there was to their relationship. At the very least, that’s what she tried to tell herself. Hate Thy Neighbor is a full length Enemies-to-Lovers standalone.

Book excerpt: The author argues that there are specific turning points in evolution. Structures and behavioral patterns that evolved in the service of discrete functions sometimes allow for unforeseen new developments as a side effect. In retrospect, they have proven to be pre-adaptations, and serve as raw material for natural selection to work upon. Love and Hate was intended to complement Konrad Lorenz's book, On Aggression, by pointing out our motivations to provide nurturing, and thus to counteract and correct the widespread but one-sided opinion that biologists always present nature as bloody in tooth and claw and intra-specific aggression as the prime mover of evolution. This simplistic image is, nonetheless, still with us, all the more regrettably because it hampers discussion across scholarly disciplines. Eibl-Eibesfeldt argues that leaders in individualized groups are chosen for their pro-social abilities. Those who comfort group members in distress, who are able to intervene in quarrels and to protect group members who are attacked, those who share, those who, in brief, show abilities to nurture, are chosen by the others as leaders, rather than those who use their abilities in competitive ways. Of course, group leaders may need, beyond their pro-social competence, to be gifted as orators, war leaders, or healers. Issues of love and hate are social in origin and hence social in consequence. Life has emerged on this planet in a succession of new forms, from the simplest algae to man-man the one being who reflects upon this creation, who seeks to fashion it himself and who, in the process, may end by destroying it. It would indeed be grotesque if the question of the meaning of life were to be solved in this way. In language that is clear and accessible throughout, arguing forcefully for the innate and "preprogrammed" dispositions of behavior in higher vertebrates, including humans, Eibl-Eibesfeldt steers a middle course in discussing the development of cultural and ethical norms while insisting on their matrix of biological origins.
