Book excerpt: Measurements were made of unidirectional heat flow, at rates up to 100 C per min, into a 2dimensional analogue of a warhead filled with the explosive DATB (1, 3-diamino-2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene). In this experimental arrangement, deflagration of DATB discs 2-cm thick and 12.7 to 17.8 cm in diam, occurred when the hottest DATB layer reached 314 C (! 10 C). No high order detonations occurred. Extrapolation of the data, obtained with initial warhead- exterior temperatures of 337 C to 450 C, leads to the prediction that such a DATB-filled warhead would ignite in about 9 sec if caught in an oil fire. Book excerpt: IGNITION TIME AND HEAT FLOW WERE MEASURED FOR 6 EXPLOSIVES, TESTED IN ONE-DIMENSIONAL, UNCONFINED ANALOGUES OF CYLINDRICAL, STEEL-CASED WARHEADS. They were unidirectionally heated at rates corresponding to aerodynamic heating associated with the sea-level flight of supersonic missiles and aircraft at low Mach numbers. With heating rates up to 100 C/min the runaway reaction occurs as a rapid deflagration beginning on the explosive's surface touching the steel case. When a temperature of 455 C was applied to the outer surface of the 1-cm thick steel warhead case, the explosive ignition times were: tetryl - 135 sec; TNT - 164 sec; PBX N-1 - 180 sec; pentolite - 139 sec; H-6 - 169 sec; and Comp. - 202 sec. PBX 9404 showed a small but inconclusive increase in impact-hammer sensitivity (the 50% point changed from 26 to 31 cm) after 3 thermal cycles between 20 C and 200 C. (Author).

Book excerpt: A series of unconfined one-dimensional heating experiments in slab geometry was conducted with TNT, Comp. B, plastic-bonded HMX, TATB, DATB, and NQ. The explosive samples were heated on one surface at heating rates between 10 and 25/sup 0/C/min. The experimentaly determined times and temperatures to ignition were reproduced computationally, with one exception, by solving a one-dimensional heat-conduction equation containing a zero-order reaction energy source term and a time-dependent temperature boundary condition. The one exception was plastic-bonded NQ. Unconfined plastic-bonded NQ did not ignite under the experimental conditions used. The heat-transfer mechanism in molten TNT, as expected, was convective; and for molten Comp. B, conductive. A reactive heat-transfer program, EXPLO, was written that is capable of solving the convective transfer mode and accepting mixtures of explosives reacting with first-order kinetics.

Book excerpt: We compare two-dimensional model results with measurements for the thermal, chemical and mechanical behavior in a thermal explosion experiment. Confined high explosives are heated at a rate of 1 C per hour until an explosion is observed. The heating, ignition, and deflagration phases are modeled using an Arbitrarily Lagrangian-Eulerian code (ALE3D) that can handle a wide range of time scales that vary from a structural to a dynamic hydro time scale. During the pre-ignition phase, quasi-static mechanics and diffusive thermal transfer from a heat source to the HE are coupled with the finite chemical reactions that include both endothermic and exothermic processes. Once the HE ignites, a hydro dynamic calculation is performed as a burn front propagates through the HE. Two RDX-based explosives, C-4 and PBXN-109, are considered, whose chemical-thermal-mechanical models are constructed based on measurements of thermal and mechanical properties along with small scale thermal explosion measurements. The simulated dynamic response of HE confinement during the explosive phase is compared to measurements in large scale thermal explosion tests. The explosion temperatures for both HE's are predicted to within 5 C. Calculated and measured wall strains provide an indication of vessel pressurization during the heating phase and violence during the explosive phase. During the heating phase, simulated wall strains provide only an approximate representation of measured values indicating a better numerical treatment is needed to provide accurate results. The results also show that more numerical accuracy is needed for vessels with lesser confinement strength. For PBXN-109, the measured wall strains during the explosion are well represented by the ALE3D calculations.

The root problem is greenhouse gas emissions, and the fundamental solution is curbing those emissions. Climate geoengineering has often been considered to be a "last-ditch" response to climate change, to be used only if climate change damage should produce extreme hardship. Although the likelihood of eventually needing to resort to these efforts grows with every year of inaction on emissions control, there is a lack of information on these ways of potentially intervening in the climate system. As one of a two-book report, this volume of Climate Intervention discusses albedo modification - changing the fraction of incoming solar radiation that reaches the surface. This approach would deliberately modify the energy budget of Earth to produce a cooling designed to compensate for some of the effects of warming associated with greenhouse gas increases. The prospect of large-scale albedo modification raises political and governance issues at national and global levels, as well as ethical concerns. Climate Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth discusses some of the social, political, and legal issues surrounding these proposed techniques. It is far easier to modify Earth's albedo than to determine whether it should be done or what the consequences might be of such an action. One serious concern is that such an action could be unilaterally undertaken by a small nation or smaller entity for its own benefit without international sanction and regardless of international consequences. Transparency in discussing this subject is critical. In the spirit of that transparency, Climate Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth was based on peer-reviewed literature and the judgments of the authoring committee; no new research was done as part of this study and all data and information used are from entirely open sources. By helping to bring light to this topic area, this book will help leaders to be far more knowledgeable about the consequences of albedo modification approaches before they face a decision whether or not to use them.
