Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surface Tension and Vital Phenomena It must also be admitted that in some signal instances in which the physicist and chemist attempted to aid in the solution of biological problems the result has not been quite satisfactory. Especially has this been the result in the case of membranes. Arrhenius' theory of dissociation and van 't Hofi's gas theory of solutions were supported by such an array of facts from the side of physics and physical chemistry that there appeared to be no question whatever regarding their universal validity, and their application in the study of the phenomena of osmosis was urged with acclaim by physical chemists and eagerly welcomed by physiologists. The theories promised at first to explain all the processes involved in difiusion through membranes, but the final result was not in all cases what was expected. In illustration of this. One instance will suffice. The osmotic concentration of the blood in man as measured by the depression of the freezing point (a) ranges from -o.s6 to The concentration of the urine indicated in the same way is, except under rare conditions. Always greater than this, and its value usually ranges between - l.50° and -s.oo° C that is, from more than two to five times that of the blood plasma. This result is the very opposite of that which should be expected from the application of the theories of Arrhenius and van 't Hoff. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small systems are a very active area of research and development due to improved instrumentation that allows for spatial resolution in the range of sizes from one to 100 nm. In this size range, many physical and chemical properties change, which opens up new approaches to the study of substances and their practical application. This affects both traditional fields of knowledge and many other new fields including physics, chemistry, biology, etc. This book highlights new developments in statistical thermodynamics that answer the most important questions about the specifics of small systems - when one cannot apply equations or traditional thermodynamic models.

Book excerpt: Surface phenomena in the field of high-temperature processes are attracting ever increasing attention on the part of scientific workers and engineers. In this field, many questions of applied science cannot properly be solved without taking into account the characteristics caused by surface phenomena at the various interfaces. The importance of surface phenomena in the pyrometallurgy of nonferrous and ferrous metals was convincingly demonstrated at a scientific conference on this problem held in Moscow towards the end of 1961. The English translation of the transactions of this conference, "Surface Phenomena in Metallurgical Processes, .. and its publication in the USA will ena ble American scientists and engineers working in the field of surface phenomena and metallurgy to acquaint themselves with the work of Russian investigators in this inter esting field of physical chemistry and the theory of metallurgical processes. In the Soviet Union, important groups of scientists in Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Sverdlovsk. and other cities are engaged in the study of surface phenomena as applied to the different branches of metallurgy. We trust that the publication of the American edition of the book "Surface Phenomena in Metallurgical Processes" will help to strengthen the scientific bonds between Soviet and American scientists.

Book excerpt: This book offers readers a snapshot of the progression of molecular modeling in the electronics industry and how molecular modeling is currently being used to understand materials to solve relevant issues in this field. The reader is introduced to the evolving role of molecular modeling, especially seen from the perspective of the IEEE community and modeling in electronics. This book also covers the aspects of molecular modeling needed to understand the relationship between structures and mechanical performance of materials. The authors also discuss the transitional topic of multiscale modeling and recent developments on the atomistic scale and current attempts to reach the submicron scale, as well as the role that quantum mechanics can play in performance prediction.

Individual chapters in this classic yet still highly relevant work emphasize concepts that are becoming more and more important when applied to the large scale versions of techniques that are considered well established. Aside from fully discussing processes, Separation Processes in Biotechnology includes sections on concentration separation and operation, purification operations, and product release and recovery. It also discusses plant operation and equipment and delves into economic considerations
