The writer's research on Yoruba traditional medicine provides the bulk of the materials in the book. The book consists of eleven chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 provide the background to the book. Chapters 3 to 10 encapsulate the different aspects of Yoruba traditional medicine such as classification of healers, methods of training of healers, methods of diagnosis and investigation of diseases, treatment of diseases, Yoruba pharmacopoeia, midwifery, bone-setting, and other forms of traditional surgery. Chapter 11 describes the meeting point of hospitals and healers; this meeting point, in the opinion of the author, should be how best to serve the interests of the patients. The best form of relationship that should exist between hospitals and healers is also discussed. The two systems of medicine exist side by side in Nigeria and most African countries yet remain functionally unrelated in any intentional sense. It is argued that no medical system is perfect and no single care system has all the answers to all human health and related problems. Each of the two systems has its strong and weak points. The often talked-about integration of the two systems has potential pitfalls and may be undesirable. The book concludes that the best form of relationship may well be one of genuine cooperation and mutual respect between the two systems since this will lead, in the ultimate, to advancement of medical knowledge and overall improvement of patient care. All levels of government in Nigeria have decisive roles to play in achieving this mutually beneficial cooperation of the two systems.

Book excerpt: The study investigated the intergenerational transfer of knowledge of traditional herbal medicine (THM) practices among Igbo tribe in postcolonial Nigerian society. The study was conducted in the Ohafia community1 of Abia State, Nigeria. It involved ten traditional herbal medicine practitioners purposively selected from two of the six autonomous communities that comprised Ohafia. It was guided by postcolonial theory, third space theory and Indigenous cultural responsiveness theory. The postcolonial theory offered me a veritable tool for thinking through the history of imperialism. In addition, third space and Indigenous cultural responsiveness theory offered me a safe space to re-think the colonial legacies to deconstruct and decolonize the traditional health-seeking practices. An Indigenous qualitative research approach was used in data collection. In line with the epistemologies2 of the Ohafia people, I adopted Ikparita uka ihu r'ihu and igba izu as methods of collecting data. These methods are similar to focus group discussions and interviews. I employed Bartlett's Collective Consensual Data Analytic Procedure (CCDAP) for the data analysis and interpretation processes. The research findings revealed many changes in the practices and intergenerational transfer of the skills, abilities, and knowledge of traditional herbal medicine (THM) practices among the Ohafia people. The colonial legacies transferred in the postcolonial era were responsible for the changes. For western medicine to survive and prosper, the colonialists had to poison the minds of the colonized about THM that has been the only source of health and wellness to the people. The study also found that due to western influence THM practices were gradually fading away, in spite of their affordability, accessibility, and effectiveness in treating certain diseases for which western medicines do not have treatment. The upcoming generations were no longer interested in learning the skills due to negative perceptions and quest for wealth. The study suggested strengthening informal learning, vigorous enlightenment campaign, and incorporating THM practices in the formal education curriculum. The implications of the study for policy, practice, theory development and further research, as well as the recommendations arising from the study were discussed. 1 Ohafia community is a community within the Igbo tribe.
