Book Synopsis Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management by : Anna Ohanyan
Download or read book Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management written by Anna Ohanyan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most regions of the world are plagued by conflicts that are made insoluble by a confluence of complex threads from history, geography, politics, and culture. These "frozen conflicts" defy conflict management interventions by both internal and external agents and institutions. Worse, they constantly threaten to extend beyond their local geographies, as in the terrorist bombings in Boston by ethnic Chechens, or to escalate from skirmishes to full-scale war, as in Nagorno-Karabakh. Consequently, such conflicts cry out for alternative approaches to the classic, state-focused, and sovereignty-based conflict management models that are practiced in traditional diplomacy—which most often produce rather short-term, ad hoc, fragmented interventions and outcomes. Drawing upon the cases of the South Caucasus, the Western Balkans, Central America, South East Asia, and Northern Ireland, Networked Regionalism as Conflict Management offers a theoretical and practical solution to this impasse by arguing for regional collective interventions that involve a long-term reengineering of existing conflict management infrastructure on the ground. Such approaches have been attracting the attention of scholars and practitioners alike yet, thus far, these concepts have rarely involved more than simple prescriptions for regional cooperation between grassroots actors and traditional diplomacy. Specifically, says Anna Ohanyan, only the cultivation and establishment of regional peace systems can provide an effective path toward conflict management in these standoffs in such intractably divided regions.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism by : Tanja A. Börzel
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism written by Tanja A. Börzel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism - the first of its kind - offers a systematic and wide-ranging survey of the scholarship on regionalism, regionalization, and regional governance. Unpacking the major debates, leading authors of the field synthesize the state of the art, provide a guide to the comparative study of regionalism, and identify future avenues of research. Twenty-seven chapters review the theoretical and empirical scholarship with regard to the emergence of regionalism, the institutional design of regional organizations and issue-specific governance, as well as the effects of regionalism and its relationship with processes of regionalization. The authors explore theories of cooperation, integration, and diffusion explaining the rise and the different forms of regionalism. The handbook also discusses the state of the art on the world regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, Eurasia, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Various chapters survey the literature on regional governance in major issue areas such as security and peace, trade and finance, environment, migration, social and gender policies, as well as democracy and human rights. Finally, the handbook engages in cross-regional comparisons with regard to institutional design, dispute settlement, identities and communities, legitimacy and democracy, as well as inter- and transregionalism.

Book Synopsis Discovering American Regionalism by : David Miller
Download or read book Discovering American Regionalism written by David Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regions are difficult to govern – coordinating policies across local jurisdictional boundaries in the absence of a formal regional government gives rise to enormous challenges. Yet some degree of coordination is almost always essential for local governments to effectively fulfill their responsibilities to their citizens. State and local governments have, over time, awkwardly, and with much experimenting, developed common approaches to regional governance. In this revolutionary new book, authors David Miller and Jen Nelles offer a new way to conceptualize those common approaches: Regional Intergovernmental Organizations (RIGOs) that bring together local governments to coordinate policies across jurisdictional boundaries. RIGOs are not governments themselves, but as Miller and Nelles demonstrate, they do have a measure of political authority that allows them to quietly and sometimes almost invisibly work to further regional interests and mitigate cross-boundary irritations. Providing a new conceptual framework for understanding how regional decision-making has emerged in the U.S., this book will provoke a new and rich era of discussion about American regionalism in theory and practice. Discovering American Regionalism will be a future classic in the study of intergovernmental relations, regionalism, and cross-boundary collaboration.
Book Synopsis Regionalism, Globalisation and International Order by : Jens-Uwe Wunderlich
Download or read book Regionalism, Globalisation and International Order written by Jens-Uwe Wunderlich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New regionalism and globalization have been prominent themes in academic and political debates since the beginning of the 1990s. Despite the considerable amount of scholarly attention that the new regionalism has received in recent years, its full empirical and theoretical potential has yet to be fully investigated. This illuminating study provides an overview of new avenues in theorizing regionalism and proposes a consolidated framework for analysis and comparison. Offering a comparative historical perspective of European and Southeast Asian regionalism, it presents new and imaginative insights into the theory and practice of regionalism and the links between regional developments, globalization and international order.
Book Synopsis Revisiting Regionalism and the Contemporary World Order by : Élise Féron
Download or read book Revisiting Regionalism and the Contemporary World Order written by Élise Féron and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book critically analyzes the ongoing changes in the regional, intra-regional, and global dynamics of cooperation, from a multi-disciplinary and pluralist perspective. It is based on the insight that in a post-hegemonic world the formation of regions and the process of globalization can be largely disconnected from the orbit of the US, and that a plurality of power and worldviews has replaced US hegemony. In spite of these changes, most existing analyses of current changes in the world order still rely upon Western-centered approaches, and Westphalian thinking. Against this backdrop, the book proposes to advance a truly global IR understanding of the post-hegemonic world, and weaves together the pluralist and multi-disciplinary perspectives of scholars located all around the world.
Book Synopsis Regionalism in World Politics by : Louise L'Estrange Fawcett
Download or read book Regionalism in World Politics written by Louise L'Estrange Fawcett and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the many different institutions and ideas to be found under the label of 'regionalism'; it places the revival of regionalism in a broader historical perspective; it asks whether there are common factors behind the revival of regionalism in so many different parts of the world; and it analyzes the cumulative impact of different brands of regionalism on international order. Leading specialists examine recent developments in regional cooperation in different parts of the world. They take a critical look at recent trends towards the new regionalism and regionalization, assessing their origins, their present and future prospects, and their place in the evolving international order. As well as concentrating on specific regions, including Pacific-Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Middle East, the book looks at theories of regionalism, the balance between regionalization and globalization in the world economy, the relation between regional organizations and the United Nations, and the relationship between the revival of regionalism and questions of identity and nationalism.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Regionalism by : Fredrik Söderbaum
Download or read book Rethinking Regionalism written by Fredrik Söderbaum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, there has been a global upsurge of various forms of regionalist projects. The widening and deepening of the European Union (EU) is the most prominent example, but there has also been a revitalization or expansion of many other regionalist projects as well, such as the African Union (AU), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). More or less every government in the world is engaged in regionalism, which also involves a rich variety of business and civil society actors, resulting in a multitude of regional processes in most fields of contemporary politics. In this new text, Fredrik Söderbaum draws on decades of scholarship to provide a major reassessment of regionalism and to address questions about its origins, logic and consequences. By examining regionalism from historical, spatial, comparative and global perspectives, Rethinking Regionalism transcends the deep intellectual and disciplinary rivalries that have limited our knowledge about the subject. This broad-ranging approach enables new and challenging answers to emerge as to why and how regionalism evolves and consolidates, how it can be compared, and what its ongoing significance is for a host of issues within global politics, from security and trade to development and the environment. Retaining a balanced and authoritative style throughout, this text will be welcomed for its uniquely comprehensive examination of regionalism in the contemporary global age.
Book Synopsis Architectural Regionalism by : Vincent B. Canizaro
Download or read book Architectural Regionalism written by Vincent B. Canizaro and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rapidly globalizing world, any investigation of architecture inevitably leads to considerations of regionalism. But despite its omnipresence in contemporary practice and theory, architectural regionalism remains a fluid concept, its historical development and current influence largely undocumented. This comprehensive reader brings together over 40 key essays illustrating the full range of ideas embodied by the term. Authored by important critics, historians, and architects such as Kenneth Frampton, Lewis Mumford, Sigfried Giedion, and Alan Colquhoun, Architectural Regionalism represents the history of regionalist thinking in architecture from the early twentieth century to today.
Book Synopsis New Regionalism in Australia by : Mardelene Grobbelaar
Download or read book New Regionalism in Australia written by Mardelene Grobbelaar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Regionalism, promoted as a new paradigm of development by the OECD, suggests that globalization is bringing together new technologies, management, employees and communities to form new patterns of local governance. However, despite the growing influence of New Regionalism in regional development policy in the West, and increasingly in Australia, there has been little debate about the relevance and application of these ideas in Australia. Bringing together contributions from academics, practitioners and policy makers, this book redresses this imbalance by examining the theoretical and empirical foundations of this powerful and growing school of thought, locating the debate firmly in the Australian context. With an opening chapter by Kevin Morgan (Cardiff University), who has been at the heart of the New Regionalism debate, the book provides important insights into the theory and practice of New Regionalism in this vibrant region.
