Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory and Practice of Fencing is an original treatment of fencing. There are three schools or systems of fencing methods, the French, Italian, and Spanish. This book does not attempt to follow any of these schools entirely, but emphasizes French methods for foil, Italian methods for sabre, and an eclectic method derived entirely from the author's experience for dueling sword. Along with over 100 illustrated sets of practice exercises the methods presented in this book differ from the classical methods of any school and create a complete and comprehensive text on fencing. Useful to those who strive to become proficient in this sport under the handicap of having no instructor as well as used to advantage by many who have fenced for varying periods of time, for fencing may be practiced many years and still one will find new and entirely unimagined aspects of the sport to renew and revitalize one's interest in it.

Book excerpt: The full title of this excellent book is The Army and Navy Gentlemen s Companion or A New and Complete Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Fencing which says all that is really needed in any title. The book is divide into three parts. The first deals with the basics of the Guard, simple parades and thrusts, together with how to hold a sword or foil, and the performance of simple manoeuvres and movements. The second part concerns counter parades, counter disengagements, feints and glizades, and the final part of the book looks at assaults and attacks in general. Like many books of the period it was meant to be both introduction to the subject and a guide to the intricacies of fencing, so that the middle class could gain an insight, and even experience, of the art of fencing, regarded as a gentleman s sport as well as a method of fighting battle. The book is well illustrated and clearly written, making it a first class source for fencing knowledge, as well as being a publication of its time, and worth reading for that alone.

Book excerpt: In the 1600s, the elegant and deadly Italian rapier was the choice sword of duelists, officers, gentlemen and noblemen: to master the rapier was to be a feared martial artist and a paragon in single combat. Among the original treatises on the use of this weapon, the most prized by historical fencing revivalists in the last 150 year has been the Great Representation of the Art and Practice of Fencing, written in 1610 by Master Ridolfo Capoferro. In this remarkable text, Capoferro described and illustrated--in unmatched detail--the use of the rapier alone and with a left-handed dagger, cloak and shield, offering the modern historical fencing student a true wealth of Renaissance fencing theory, form and repertoire. With this book, expert researcher and rapier instructor Tom Leoni offers a full, accurate and accessible English translation of Capoferro's teachings, complete with high-resolution reproductions of the 43 original illustrations. To make the book even more useful, Tom has included bullet-point synopses of all the actions illustrated by Capoferro, as well as a glossary of rapier-fencing terms with examples referring the reader to how they are used in the text. Also included is a primer on key rapier-fencing concepts and actions, as well as a historical introduction about Capoferro and his extraordinary relevance in the revival of historical martial arts.
