Book excerpt: The lateral motion resulting from a disturbance of the type produced by asymmetric loss of thrust has been determined for a hypothetical average airplane equipped with an automatic pilot. Plots of the resultant motion and the various modes that constitute the motion are presented for controls fixed and for various amounts of automatic control. The automatic control is assumed to be of a type that produces aileron deflections proportional to the angle of bank and rudder deflections proportional to the angle of azimuth. The use of an automatic control may introduce either of two modes. The first mode is primarily a rolling oscillation; the second is a poorly damped long-period oscillation in azimuth and bank . The motion following any change in trim causes the airplane to reach a state of equilibrium on a different flight heading from that existing before the disturbance and the airplane assumes a new flight attitude.

Download or read book A History of Control Engineering, 1930-1955 written by Stuart Bennett and published by IET. This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the consolidation of a specialty, as the various feedback control devices used in the 1930s for aircraft and ships, the telephone system, and analogue computers, were brought together during World War II to form what is now known as the classical frequency response methods of analysis and design, and applied to non-linear, sampled-data, and stochastic systems. Follows the field's development through the post-war addition of the root locus method to the introduction of the state-space methods of modern control. Distributed by INSPEC. This book was released on 1945 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A procedure is presented for determining the motions of an airplane resulting from the deflection of the lateral or directional controls for the case of non-linear derivatives. The step-by-step integration on which the procedure is based considers the rolling, the yawing, and the lateral accelerations computed from wind-tunnel data as functions of the sideslip angle. A sample computation table is presented to illustrate the application of the procedure. A comparison is made of different methods for calculating the disturbed motions of an airplane resulting from an abrupt aileron movement. Experimental data, which were obtained from conventional wind-tunnel tests of a model of a recent fighter airplane, are used in the computations for comparing the various methods. The resulting solutions show that, for the case of nonlinear derivatives, the calculated motions are in better agreement with the results obtained from flight tests if the rolling and yawing accelerations computed from static-model tests are condisered as functions of the sideslip angle. The lateral acceleration, which is often assumed to be negligible, should be considered. The variation of the rolling and yawing accelerations resulting from aileron movement probably should also be considered when sufficient data are available.
Book Synopsis The Lateral Response of Airplanes to Random Atmospheric Turbulence by : John Marshall Eggleston
Download or read book The Lateral Response of Airplanes to Random Atmospheric Turbulence written by John Marshall Eggleston and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The report is separated into two parts. In the first part the theoretical basis for calculating the lateral motions of an airplane flying through continuous random atmospheric turbulence is presented. The lateral motions are derived in terms of (1) the transfer functions relating the motion in the various degrees of freedom to the yawing moment, rolling moment, and side force, (2) the statistical forces and moments at the center of gravity due to gust velocities acting on the lifting surfaces of the airplane, and (3) the power spectra of the three orthogonal components of gust velocity acting on the airplane along the flight path. The method takes into account the random variations of gust velocity across the span and along the fuselage. Solutions are given in the form of equations relating the power spectra of the angular motions of the airplane to the power spectra of the gust velocities.
