Book Synopsis The Commentaries on the Minor Epistles of Paul by : Theodore (Bishop of Mopsuestia)
Download or read book The Commentaries on the Minor Epistles of Paul written by Theodore (Bishop of Mopsuestia) and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2010 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most famous representative of the school of Antioch, Theodore of Mopsuestia penned a number of commentaries on biblical books in both Testaments. This volume offers not only an introduction to Theodore's life and work but also the first modern-language translation of his commentaries on Paul's minor epistles (Galatians-Philemon). The English translation is accompanied by a facing Latin/Greek text based on H. B. Swete's 1880-1882 critical edition of these early fifth-century commentaries. As a prime example of 'Antiochene' exegesis and theology, they are of considerable interest, providing valuable evidence for Theodore's exegetical principles and practice, his Christology and doctrines of grace and free will, and his understanding of crucial developments in Christian ministry and church polity from the time of Paul to his own day"--

Book Synopsis Tradition and Innovation: Baptismal Rite and Mystagogy in Theodore of Mopsuestia and Narsai of Nisibis by : Nathan Witkamp
Download or read book Tradition and Innovation: Baptismal Rite and Mystagogy in Theodore of Mopsuestia and Narsai of Nisibis written by Nathan Witkamp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tradition and Innovation, Nathan Witkamp convincingly argues that Narsai of Nisibis’ (d. ca. 503) baptismal rite and mystagogy, as portrayed in his Liturgical Homilies 21-22, are much less dependent on Theodore of Mopsuestia (ca. 350-ca. 428) than scholars have previously supposed. Narsai’s baptismal rite turns out to represent a particular East Syrian liturgical tradition, independent of Theodore. In his mystagogy, Narsai uses Theodore’s Baptismal Homilies 1-3 as just one source among others to create the artwork he desires. This detailed comparative study contributes to our understanding of rite and mystagogy in Theodore and Narsai within the broader early Syrian context, as well as to the reception of Theodore by Narsai and the East Syrian Church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore of Mopsuestia serves as one of the most important exemplars of Antiochene exegesis of his generation. While charges of heterodoxy against Theodore may not be entirely justified, there remains an apparent dualism in his Christology that should be critically viewed in light of the later Chalcedonian formula. With this caution, there still remains much that is valuable for contemporary readers, whether preachers, students or lay people interested in the early church?s understanding of the Gospel of John. Here for the first time is a complete English translation of this valuable work, ably translated by Marco Conti and edited by Joel C. Elowsky.

Book Synopsis Grace for Grace by : Alexander Y. Hwang
Download or read book Grace for Grace written by Alexander Y. Hwang and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to Grace for Grace focus on the debates on grace and free will inspired by Augustine's later teachings on grace and the various reactions to it. Based on fresh study of a wealth of primary sources, this international team of scholars explores the intra-Church debates over grace and free will after Augustine and Pelagius. In both popular and scholarly literature, the conflict has been traditionally referred to as the "Semi-Pelagian Controversy". For several decades, however, scholars have been distancing themselves from that simplistic and inaccurate portrayal. This book intends to solidify a disparate movement of scholarly thought and provide a secure basis for renewed study of the persons, texts, and events of a critical period in the reception of Augustine in the Early Middle Ages.
