Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of Faith If the elements which go to make up Divine faith are overlooked by the persons who discuss this question or write upon it, errors most fatal and disastrous are certain to appear, and those errors will, in many cases, be so far-reaching in their effects as ultimately to lead to the complete overthrow of all revealed religion. We have, therefore, devoted the opening chapter of the treatise to an explanation of the virtue of faith, its supernatural character, and its influence on the faculty in which it inheres. We have tried to explain how it is acquired, and the various ways in which it may be lost, and also suggested to the reader some of the differences which exist between it and the moral virtues. In referring to the nature and causes of faith we are reminded that the Vatican Council (cap. 3, De Fide) teaches that faith is a supernatural virtue by which, under the inspiration and help of God's grace, we believe that those things which were revealed by Him are true, not be cause their intrinsic truth is perceived by the natural light of reason, but on account of the authority of God who reveals them and who can neither deceive nor be deceived; that to secure a reasonable assent to faith God has willed that the external arguments for revelation shouldbe joined to the internal assistance of the Holy Spirit; and that those external arguments are, in the first place, mlracles and prophecy which, since they go to demonstrate God's omnipotence and infinite knowledge, are unquestionable Signs of Divine revelation and are also suited to the intellectual capacities of all. In trying to explain the nature of faith we have treated of it in its relation to the human faculties, and especially in its relation to the reason and will (cc. Ii. And God does not ask us to accept faith blindly. On the contrary He wishes us to make use of our reason, as a preliminary to faith. The Apostles appealed to the reason of the unbelieving multitudes, and St. Paul often did so with great effect; yet, in alluding to his share in the work, the Apostle thus wrote: I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase (1 Cor. Iii. God alone can give men faith, although, by appealing to the reasonableness of Christian faith, the preacher tries to remove the difficulties and prejudices against its acceptance. Hence the necessity of having the reason and will well ordered as a preparation for faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Been purposely chosen as con structive rather than controversial. The atmosphere of passing controversies has been deliberately avoided. The reader may sometimes be puzzled to find himself passing from philosophy to theology. On reflection he will, I think, see that this is only a natural consequence of what was to Dr. Holland at once his philosophy and his theology. To him the world of thought was one; a world without God was not a world; the process by which man passes from the primary human experience to the living faith through Christ in God was continuous; the logic of faith was the logic of history and fact, the logic of human experience - the philosophy, as he said, of the man who has become aware of the meaning and purpose of human life as a valid whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. I was asked to write it, but I was ready to do so, although it is not pleasant to have to controvert the views Of a brother for whom I have the high regard that I entertain for Mr. Campbell. I am far from being unsympathetic with the attempt he has made to give us a New Theology, and we must not be too hard on him even if we think he has erred greatly with respect to some most important matters. Urged by similar motives, the present writer some twenty years ago went even further than Mr. Campbell in some directions, although not so far in others. But he became able in time to work his way back to the evangelical faith without any sacrifice of truth or consistency. Ministers and others are Often suspected of just saying what they are obliged or expected to say, owing to their position. Let me mention, therefore, that, while glad to be recognised as a Congregational Minister, I have always sought to follow and speak that which I believed to be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the New Day This is not a reconstruction of theology but a plea for that work and some suggestion of a few typical points where it is needed and opportune. A teacher of theology shrinks a bit when it is said that the day for theology is over; he is apt to think in stead that the day has just come for vital religion which will mean a vital theology. But such a teacher knows well that theology can be devitalized by mistaking its own expressions for the truth it is trying to express. Visitors to theological seminaries often tell young men they are not to preach their theology, whereas in any sound way of speaking it is the only thing they are to preach. Yet the most deadly thing that could be preached is a theology that does not carry the message of religion for its own day. The appeal herein is not to technical theologians but to working ministers and thoughtful laymen who, after all, build and use the theology that is living and who sometimes fear to see it change. The great days just passed have given many of us a renewed assurance that Christianity is more vital and forceful than it has been for many a long day. Its vitality may well claim the right to phrase itself anew - which means to reconstruct theology at any point where it may need reconstructing. And in these two elements is found the secret of its name. It is the Seventeen, not because there are or ever have been seventeen members, but becausethat is the arbitrary limit set to its membership. It is the Theological Seventeen, not because its members claim to be theologians of distinction or authority, but because they are interested in theology, hold that it has a message for this modern world, and that the truth which it upholds will free a world enchained by old concepts, half-truths, and new fancies. The argument pre supposes three things: (i) Belief in the existence of God, the Creator of the universe and Of man (2) the spirituality of the human soul and (3) the validity of the pro cesses of human reason. The first two can be proved (see Bibliography at the end), although considerations of space forbid their treatment here; the third is not capable of proof, for any proof must assume and involve the conclusion. The doctrine on which it is founded, namely, that faith in Christ (like the Chris tian life upon the whole) admits of gradual progress from less to more perfect develop ment - may almost be said to be unknown to the science of Theology. If, however, this doctrine is not found in a definite and systematic form in the ordinary systems of doctrinal Christianity, it appears to be uni formly recognised by every writer of any authority, as one which enters essentially into the teaching of Holy Scripture.
