Book excerpt: This little work is an excerpt from Bellarmine's larger treatise On the Roman Pontiff, book 4, which follows after the assertion of what was already universally taught at that time, but not completely understood nor decreed by the Church's solemn magisterium, that the Pope was infallible in his teaching on faith and morals when teaching the whole Church. These chapters then, being 8-14 of that work, follow to test and prove this claim historically, wherein he posits exculpatory evidence against claims that 40 Popes had grievously erred in matters of faith. Much as with the doctrine of Papal infallibility itself, St. Robert Bellarmine does not endeavor to show the impeccability of Popes, rather that in matters of faith, where the Popes are actually authoritative, they did not err. Some matters treated here are the objection of certain Protestants, while others are even of Catholics who are confused on the decrees or behavior of certain Popes. These chapters were used as a blueprint at Vatican I by the fathers of that Council to further scrutinize these cases and be sure of the limits and nature of papal authority. Bellarmine thus lays out four basic propositions; Two of these Catholics must believe with divine faith per the subsequent decree of Vatican I (which was no less incumbent upon the believer in Bellarmine's time, though then it were the universal teaching of all theologians), namely that the Pope is infallible when judging matters of Faith and Morals and defining these as matters that must be believed by all the faithful. This particular distinction is important, for the Pope, outside of this very narrow category, does not enjoy infallibility, thus in private letters, private teaching, their acts, behavior, etc., Popes can give scandal, they can give opinions that are in fact false, but they cannot teach the whole Church and bind it to believe error. To quote Bellarmine himself: "For to this point no Pope has been a heretic, or certainly it cannot be proven that any of them were heretics; therefore it is a sign that such a thing cannot be." (On the Roman Pontiff, book 4, ch. 6.) In this treatise Bellarmine endeavors to show that this is the case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of infallibility, formulated at the First Vatican Council in 1870, is a concept that has intrigued - & even perplexed - Catholics & non-Catholics throughout its history. This popular work traces the development of infallibility, how it is understood today, problems & questions it has engendered, & what may be its future. At the core, this is a story of religious authority & the problems of shifting understandings in the midst of changing cultures. McClory, a distinguished journalist & former Roman Catholic priest, has written a sweeping account not only of the evolution of a difficult doctrine but of the key players - both on & off the Vatican stage - who have been pivotal in the process. His is a frank & even-handed presentation of the issues that puts emphasis on people rather than on abstract assertions & declarations. A thoroughly fascinating & well-researched contribution to a subject of timeless interest, Power & the Papacy is sure to generate much attention as the Church enters the 21st century amid continuing struggles & perplexities regarding papal authority.

Book excerpt: Under what authority does the Pope reign over the Roman Catholic Church? What are the ecclesiastical and theological underpinnings of the papacy? How did early Christians view the authority of the Roman bishop? Dr. Brattston answers these questions by examining Biblical and early Christian sources from the first three centuries of the Church. Wherever you stand on the issue, you will be informed, enlightened, and challenged by the evidence presented. The book features a Foreword written by Dr. Thomas P. Scheck, Associate Professor of Theology at Ave Maria University. About the Author Dr. David W. T. Brattston resides in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Texas oilman. A brilliant female archaeologist. An unknown world underneath the Vatican. In 1939, a team of workers beneath the Vatican unearthed an early Christian grave. This surprising discovery launched a secret quest that would last decades — a quest to discover the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. From earliest times, Christian tradition held that Peter — a lowly fisherman from Galilee, whom Christ made leader of his Church — was executed in Rome by Emperor Nero and buried on Vatican Hill. But his tomb had been lost to history. Now, funded anonymously by a wealthy American, a small army of workers embarked on the dig of a lifetime. The incredible, sometimes shocking, story of the 75-year search and its key players has never been fully told — until now. The quest would pit one of the 20th century’s most talented archaeologists — a woman — against top Vatican insiders. The Fisherman’s Tomb is a story of the triumph of faith and genius against all odds. ABOUT THE AUTHOR John O’Neill is a lawyer and #1 New York Times bestselling author. He has spent much of his life visiting and researching early Christian sites. He is a 1967 graduate of the Naval Academy, a former law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and senior partner at a large international law firm.

Book excerpt: Edited by Alcuin Reid Adrian Fortescue, a British apologist for the Catholic faith in the early part of the 20th century, wrote this classic of clear exposition on the faith of the early Church in the papacy based upon the writings of the Church fathers until 451. No ultramontanist, Fortescue can be a keen critic of personal failings of various Popes, but he shows through his brilliant assessment of the writings of the Church fathers that the early Church had a clear understanding of the primacy of Peter and a belief in the divinely given authority of the Pope in matters of faith and morals. Referring to the famous passage in Matthew 16:18 where Jesus confers his authority upon Peter as the head of the Apostles, and the first Pope, Fortescue says that, while Christians can continue to argue about the exact meaning of that passage from Scripture, and the various standards that are used for judgments about correct Christian teaching and belief, ""the only possible real standard is a living authority, an authority alive in the world at this moment, that can answer your difficulties, reject a false theory as it arises and say who is right in disputed interpretations of ancient documents."" Fortescue shows that the papacy actually seems to be one of the clearest and easiest dogmas to prove from the early Church. And it is his hope through this work that it will contribute to a ressourcement with regard to the office of the papacy among those in communion with the Bishop of Rome, and that it will assist those outside this communion to seek it out, confident that it is willed by Christ for all who would be joined to him in this life and in the next.
