Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 5 There is not, I will take upon myself to say, a needlessly hard word in the foregoing, nor one that the lamented Mr. Bedford himself would have felt severely, had he been alive to read it. In this paper I have done Mr. Yates an injustice by paying him a compliment. I have shown how much he interests me by being myself garrulous over his younger gossiping. It is considered a dangerous thing, and one rigorously denied me in daily practice, to promise more anon but I think it safe to say that I have not done with my friend's theatrical reminiscences, and that I shall return to them in my own way next month. Ancient prices or admission To theatres. - The cost of admission to the theatres in the days of Queen Elizabeth was very moderate. Let me never live to look so high as the twopenny room (boxes) again, says Ben Jonson in the Prologue to Every Man out of His Humour, acted for the first time at the Globe, on the Bankside, 1599. The price of the best room or boxes was one Shilling of the lower places twopence, and in some places one penny. The twopenny, mentioned by Jonson, was the gallery. Decker says, Pay your twopence to a player, and you may sit in the gallery. This place seems to have been very dis creditable, for it is commonly described as the resort of pickpockets and other bad characters in Every Man out of his Humour. The lords' room over the stage (this answered to the present stage-boxes), the price to them - one shilling. Thus Decker, in his Guls' Hornbook tells us, At a new play, you take up the twelvepenny room, next the stage. It will give you consequence, because the lords and you may seem to be hail-fellow, well met. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 5: January, 1905 An undoubted and decisive element in the successful career of Nathaniel C. Goodwin is that he knows a play when he sees it. Those actors who do not possess this faculty of discernment fail. Very well; he has a play in The Usurper, a play that acts, a play that gives hint his scenes; but, with all his contributory skill, he has not been able to so modify and qualify it as to give it that degree of politeness which is required by his audiences. It is a melodrama, but he has sought to give quiet endings to the acts. He has done all that he could, and the play remains rubbish. A Western ranchman, who has made millions, and who has fallen in love with an English girl whom he chanced to meet in his early days, goes to England and leases the estate and castle of the girl's impoverished family. It is stipulated that the family remain to keep house. The girl is about to elope with an en gaging rascal. She has promised to show the tower of the castle to the ranchman. In order to save her from the elopement he persuades the girl to show him the tower at once. Once in it he locks the door. The villain is the author of the ruin of the girl's maid. The maid's father has escaped from jail, and is determined to kill the villain; his daughter is keeping the convict in concealment in the tower. By means of a series of melodramatic complications the truth comes out, the girl is saved, so that the ranchman does not pay for his lease in vain. Mr. Goodwin in fuses his humor into many of the scenes, but, on the whole, the play does not require further record. Princess theatre. Richard III. Tragedy by William Shakespeare. Presented Dec. 5, with this cast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 1: A Weekly Journal of the Stage; August 5, 1882 In the latter years Mr. Irving has created few new parts, and of these the most marked were Philip, in Queen Mary and the knightly role in Tennyson's Cup, but these parts were only important as a tribute to the greatest poet of his time, and one of the greatest poets of all time. Mr. Irving's next revival, it is understood, will be Much Ado About Noth ging, in which it is expected that the great actor will give a new courtliness and grace to the graceful and courtly Benedick. Of a Repertoire Theatre, not, however, national or state supported, I still have lingering hopes. A few Quixotic philanthropists have come to me from time to time for information about this strange crea tion I write about, at times so hopefully, at others so despairingly. And although it seems too good ever to be true, I have good reasons for hoping that the money may shortly be supplied for an initial attempt in this blessed direction.
