Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testing of Transformer Steel Consequently, methods of testing With alternating currents have come to be regarded as the only satisfactory way of making these measurements, and present efforts are directed to securing the best conditions for this form of test. In the wattmeter method, the electrical energy Which is supplied to maintain the alternating magnetization is measured With a wattmeter, While the maximum magnetic induction produced in the specimen is determined by a voltage measurement at the terminals of the magnetizing Winding or at the terminals of a secondary Winding placed around the same core of test material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equipment for Testing Current Transformers The equipment and methods used for this purpose at the Bureau of Standards at Washington have been modified and enlarged from time to time to keep pace with the increasing demands in accuracy and range of the transformers to be tested. The object of this paper is to describe the equipment and methods 1 now in use at this Bureau in the hope that the data given may be of assistance to other labora tory workers who may wish to install apparatus for similar work. The accuracy needed in this class of testing should, if possible, be so high that errors in the certified values will be negligibly small in comparison with the inaccuracy likely to occur in the next step in the measurement process; that is, in the comparison in the field between the standard transformer and the working transformer. A limit to the possible accuracy is, of course, set by the repeatability of the transformer under test. This limit is influenced by a number of factors, among which are changes in the magnetic condition of the core as a result of previous operation, uncertainties in the temperature of the transformer windings and hence in their resistance, and uncer tainty in the exactness with which the burden used in the field is duplicated in the test. In the case of hole-type current transformers additional uncertainty arises because of differences in the position of [the primary conductor in the hole, and in the position of the return lead. The magnitude of the changes in calibration resulting from these effects depends greatly upon the type of transformer, but may amount to several tenths of 1 percent. The sensitivity of the present equipment is such that a change of percent in ratio and minute in phase angle is definitely detectable even at a secondary current as small as ampere. Changes in the performance of the transformer under test are there fore often noted. The accuracy of the equipment, since it involves the calibration of resistance standards of widely different values with the additional liability to errors from skin effect and residual self - induct ance, is, perhaps, not as high as the precision mentioned above would indicate. The accuracy limits printed on the Bureau's certificate form (viz, percent in ratio and 3 minutes in phase angle) are, however, certainly very conservative. In reducing the observed values all corrections are normally carried to the nearest percent and minute and the resulting values are then rounded off in the certificate to the nearest percent and 1 minute. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformer Practice: Manufacture, Assembling, Connections, Operation and Testing The development of the alternating-current transformer dates back about 25 years. At that time very little was known re garding design for operation at high voltages, and the engineer of the present day can scarcely realize the difficulties encountered in the construction of the early transformers. The high-voltage transformer made long-distance trans mission work possible, and the increased distances of transmission stimulated the design of large transformers. In the early days of transformer development as many as 15 to 20 transformer secondary windings have been connected in series to facilitate the operation of a long-distance transmission system, the maxi mum rating of each transformer being not greater than 10 kw. However, a method of constructing large transformers has long been devised by which an enormous amount of power may be transformed in a single unit. Such designs embody principles of insulation for high voltages and various methods for maintain ing a low operating temperature. Ten years ago a 500-kilowatt unit was considered to be a large size of transformer. The history of ten years' development has shown a most interesting process of evolution: it has marked more than a tenfold increase in size up to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Centrifugally Cast Steel The most serious of the low - carbon areas were found in castings Nos. 3a and 6_ (figs 7 and These areas are not completely eliminated by normalizing, and persist even after quenching and drawing, but have been almost completely eliminated by the double-quench and draw treatment. The normalizing treatment, for the most part, greatly refines the structures, while quenching and drawing produces a sorbitic structure with partially diffused ferrite. Structures after the double-quench and draw compare favorably with those of large heat-treated steel forgings. A certain method of detecting this trouble is to note whether the instrument reads the same when it is turned around into different angular positions. Book excerpt: This book contains all information regarding magnetism and magnetic materials that an electrical engineer needs to know to be able to understand and design magnetic devices. The handbook comprises chapters comprising basic electromagnetism, basic quantum mechanics, ferromagnetism, magnetic materials, magnetic material characterization, modeling of magnetic materials, and magnetic design. A comprehensive description of the physical origin of magnetism of materials is given chapter two and a thorough review of the physics behind ferromagnetism is given in chapter three. All chapters are written in a textbook fashion such that they can easily be assimilated separately. The book gathers in an understandable the multidisciplinary topic of magnetism and magnetic materials in way that it can serve as a comprehensive introduction to engineers that considers use of magnetic materials in their designs. The book covers all major modeling techniques of magnetic materials including the well-known Presiach, Jiles-Atherton and lag models. General magnetic design approaches including major and new design tools also are presented. The book also serves as a guideline regarding the choice of feasible materials in specific applications regarding both soft and hard magnetic materials with an inventory of alternatives to electrical steel. Relevant performance criteria then are given such that appropriate materials can be selected. The final chapter offers a list of current electrical steel and magnetic material suppliers.

Book excerpt: Maintaining appropriate power systems and equipment expertise is necessary for a utility to support the reliability, availability, and quality of service goals demanded by energy consumers now and into the future. However, transformer talent is at a premium today, and all aspects of the power industry are suffering a diminishing of the supply of knowledgeable and experienced engineers. Now in print for over 80 years since initial publication in 1925 by Johnson & Phillips Ltd, the J & P Transformer Book continues to withstand the test of time as a key body of reference material for students, teachers, and all whose careers are involved in the engineering processes associated with power delivery, and particularly with transformer design, manufacture, testing, procurement, application, operation, maintenance, condition assessment and life extension.Current experience and knowledge have been brought into this thirteenth edition with discussions on moisture equilibrium in the insulation system, vegetable based natural ester insulating fluids, industry concerns with corrosive sulphur in oil, geomagnetic induced current (GIC) impacts, transportation issues, new emphasis on measurement of load related noise, and enhanced treatment of dielectric testing (including Frequency Response Analysis), Dissolved Gas analysis (DGA) techniques and tools, vacuum LTCs, shunt and series reactors, and HVDC converter transformers. These changes in the thirteenth edition together with updates of IEC reference Standards documentation and inclusion for the first time of IEEE reference Standards, provide recognition that the transformer industry and market is truly global in scale. -- From the foreword by Donald J. FallonMartin Heathcote is a consultant specializing in power transformers, primarily working for utilities. In this context he has established working relationships with transformer manufacturers on several continents. His background with Ferranti and the UK’s Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) included transformer design and the management and maintenance of transformer-based systems. * The definitive reference for all involved in designing, installing, monitoring and maintaining high-voltage systems using power transformers (electricity generation and distribution sector; large-scale industrial applications)* The classic reference work on power transformers and their applications: first published in 1925, now brought fully up to date in this thirteenth edition* A truly practical engineering approach to design, monitoring and maintenance of power transformers – in electricity generation, substations, and industrial applications.
