Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testimony of the Four Gospels Concerning Jesus Christ IN the year 1871, Shortly after the beginning of the work of The Theistic Church in London, I preached seven Sermons entitled What think ye (f Christ? These were republished in the fifth volume of The Sling and the Stone. Although there is much in those Sermons which I could repeat sincerely to-day, there is also much in them which I could not repeat, because I know more than I did then, because my mind has been growing in strength and clearness, and because the critical and sentimental literature on the subject of Jesus Christ demands a fresh examination of the claims made by him or on his behalf. I have therefore instructed my literary executor not to republish those Sermons of 1871 without the most careful excision of those passages which I could not now honestly repeat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testimony of the Four Gospels Concerning Jesus Christ This book is sure to bring down fresh obloquy upon myself and upon the sacred cause which I aspire to serve. It is therefore necessary to guard against misunderstandings and misrepresentations at the outset. In as few words as possible, I wish to state what the object of this book is and what it is not. To begin with the negative, my object here is not to attack, or to depreciate in the very smallest degree, that ideal of human goodness and even perfection which is so widely identified throughout Christendom with the name of Jesus Christ. We cannot have too lofty and pure an ideal of what man may and ought to reach, and in thousands of Christian hearts that ideal is associated with the name of Christ. To them the name of Jesus Christ stands for the most perfect man in all relations of life, the most perfect father, most perfect son, and most perfect brother; no less for the most perfect woman, mother, daughter and sister; all that is sweetest and best in human relations, in conduct and in character, is typified or symbolized to the mind under the term "Christ-like." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 3: The Fourth Gospel My aim in this volume has not been, except incidentally, to throw light upon the subject-matter of the Fourth Gospel, but to ascertain - so far as can by way of a preliminary study be done, and needs to be in order to determine our attitude towards it from the outset in using it - whether it has a right to be treated as an independent historical witness alongside of the Synoptic Gospels, having drawbacks indeed in this character as they have, though largely different ones, but whose testimony cannot any more than theirs be disregarded. I am convinced that this right belongs to it, which in recent times has been and still is denied by many. As a far fuller study than any attempted here of the actual contributions made to our knowledge of the Life and Work of Jesus Christ by each of the four Gospels I may mention T/ze Four/fold Gospel by Dr E. A. Abbott. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek. Book excerpt: “This book will prove to be a most effective weapon… against the debunking and skeptical attitudes toward the Gospels that are so prevalent, not only in academe, but also on the street, among young people who, sadly, are leaving the Churches in droves.” – Robert Barron, author of Catholicism For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus of Nazareth did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. In The Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre, the bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist, goes back to the sources—the biblical and historical evidence for Christ—in order to answer several key questions, including: • Were the four Gospels really anonymous? • Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies? • Were the four Gospels written too late to be reliable? • What about the so-called “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas? • Did Jesus claim to be God? • Is Jesus divine in all four Gospels? Or only in John? • Did Jesus fulfill the Jewish prophecies of the Messiah? • Why was Jesus crucified? • What is the evidence for the Resurrection? As The Case for Jesus will show, recent discoveries in New Testament scholarship, as well as neglected evidence from ancient manuscripts and the early church fathers, together have the potential to pull the rug out from under a century of skepticism toward the traditional Gospels. Above all, Pitre shows how the divine claims of Jesus of Nazareth can only be understood by putting them in their ancient Jewish context.

D. 50 and 65 the synoptics, as Matthew, Mark and Luke are called, were written. The Gospel by J ohn dates from a later period. Probably in the decade between A. D. 80 and 90 it was published by the servant of Christ whose name it bears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In Scripting Jesus, Michael White, famed scholar of early Christian history, reveals how the gospel stories of Jesus were never meant to be straightforward historical accounts, but rather were scripted and honed as performance pieces for four different audiences with four different theological agendas. As he did as a featured presenter in two award-winning PBS Frontline documentaries (“From Jesus to Christ” and “Apocalypse!”), White engagingly explains the significance of some lesser-known aspects of The New Testament; in this case, the development of the stories of Jesus—including how the gospel writers differed from one another on facts, points of view, and goals. Readers of Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and Bart Ehrman will find much to ponder in Scripting Jesus.

After the prophets, John proclaimed that God was already in the world, and that to know him men required only to be born again in the spirit. Jesus said within himself: If God he in theworld, i must know him. Where is God? And withdrawing into the wilderness, Jesus learned that there is a life of the flesh, of which he had no experience, and that, moreover, there is a manifestation of God of which he had experience. Book excerpt: Why does the New Testament contain four Gospels—four different accounts of the same Man? And don’t the Gospels contradict one another? Masterful Bible teacher Arthur Pink explains how the four Gospels do not contradict but rather collaborate in order to provide us with a deeper, multifaceted description of the person of Jesus Christ. In Matthew, we see Jesus as Messiah and King of the Jews. In Mark, we are introduced to the Servant of Jehovah. In Luke, we see the human Jesus as the Son of Man, Adam’s descendant. Finally, in John, we thrill to the supernatural Jesus who is undoubtedly the Son of God. No believer can truly know Jesus without having an understanding of the four distinct roles He fulfilled in His time on earth. Pink’s in-depth look at the four Gospels will boost your faith and bring you ever closer to a Savior who is fully human, fully divine, and above everything, Lord of all.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Living Christ and the Four Gospels The Lectures printed in this volume were delivered to the Carrs Lane congregation, at irregular intervals, during the winter and early summer of the present year; the five first and the last on Sunday mornings, and the rest at the usual Thursday evening service. For whom were they intended? Eleven or twelve years ago I was preaching at Augustine Church, Edinburgh, a few months after Dr. Lindsay Alexander, a scholar and theologian of distinction, had resigned the pastorate.
