Book Synopsis Life and Adventures of the Celebrated Bandit JoaquÕn Murrieta by : Ireneo Paz
Download or read book Life and Adventures of the Celebrated Bandit JoaquÕn Murrieta written by Ireneo Paz and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in its original English translation, is the dime-novelesque biography of one of the most infamous bandits in the history of the Old West, for decades a source of fear and legend in the state of California. To Mexicans and Indians, however, Joaquin Murrieta became a symbol of resistance to the displacement and oppression visited on them in the wake of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), particularly by the "'Forty-Niners" who flooded into California from all over the world during the Gold Rush. In his introduction, literary critic Luis Leal has researched and written the first definitive history of the Murrieta legend in its various incarnations. Ireneo Paz's Spanish-language biography was first published in Mexico City in 1904; it was translated into English by Frances P. Belle in 1925. This edition includes several line-drawings that appeared in the original volume, heightening the strong sense evoked here of this turbulent period in U. S. history.
Download or read book Bandits written by Elmore Leonard and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Almost unbearable suspense. Leonard has produced another winner.” —People A wild ride with “the coolest, hottest writer in America” (Chicago Tribune), Bandits has everything Elmore Leonard fans love: non-stop thrills, unexpected twists and turns, unforgettable characters, and the most razor-sharp dialogue being rapidly exchanged anywhere in the crime fiction genre. Leonard stands tall among the all-time greats (John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain) and towers far above most of the writers currently plying the noir fiction trade. The master who created U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, currently of the hit TV series Justified, is at the top of his game, ensnaring readers in an ingenious plot hatched by a former jewel thief and a radical ex-nun to scam millions from a sadistic Nicaraguan colonel. In fact, the Philadelphia Inquirer says Bandits “may well be his best.” Read it and decide for yourself.

Book Synopsis The Bandits from Rio Frio - A Naturalistic and Humorous Novel of Customs, Crimes, and Horrors by : Manuel Payno
Download or read book The Bandits from Rio Frio - A Naturalistic and Humorous Novel of Customs, Crimes, and Horrors written by Manuel Payno and published by Variocity. This book was released on 2005-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bandits from Rio Frio appears here for the first time in English in a translation that captures all the warmth and vitality of the original Spanish. All of Mexico in the mid nineteenth-century parades through the pages of Manuel Payno's classic novel. Landscapes painted with the clear light and shadows of the Mexican valleys and mountains, portraits of Indians and presidents in the teeming capital and in the humble indigenous pueblos; these provide the background as the author develops a romantic history of the impossible love between the Countess Mariana del Sauz and Lieutenant Colonel Juan Robreno. An illegitimate son results from a brief union of these lovers, and this star-crossed child is kidnapped and abandoned by Aztec witches. Wrongly accused of theft and murder, he must pursue the truth of his birth through staggering misfortunes. Another thread traces the criminal career of the notorious Evaristo, an artisan who becomes involved with the Countess' family and becomes a murderer and a bandit of national and even international fame. Yet another thread follows the lawyer Lamparilla's schemes for the love of the beautiful and independent Cecilia, a fruit vender and captain of a trajinera, the ancient Mexican freight canoe. The lives of these and many other memorable characters are swept up in a great web of organized crime spun by the fabulous Relumbron, presidential assistant, wealthy aristocrat, church stalwart, family man, and former associate of the great Santa Ana. Payno has lovingly preserved these portraits and landscapes of a Mexico and a society now long gone, yet somehow still familiar, still recognizable within the modern republic. He has defined what it means to beMexican, and his themes resonate today as powerfully as they must have a hundred years ago. Praise for Manuel Payno and Los Bandidos de Rio Frio ... a sweeping epic vision of a country... Payno's novel is an immense fresco of [Mexico], depicting members of all social classes... By presenting a wide spectrum of characters, Payno covers every aspect of popular life in Mexico... while sketching the political, rural, provincial, urban, military, religious, and economic problems of the country during times of anarchy. Jose Tomas de Cuellar, author of The Magic Lantern: Having a Ball and Christmas Eve (Library of Latin America) Manuel Payno's Los Bandidos de Rio Frio [is] the only Mexican novel of the nineteenth-century to approach an adequate and persuasive portrayal of the tragi-comedy of national politics and life in the decades after the Reformation. D. A. Brading, author of The First America: The Spanish Monarchy, Creole Patriots and the Liberal State 1492 - 1866 (Cambridge University Press) [Payno's] consistent refusal to assume a fixed and fervid loyalty to any one party left his judgment clear for objective evaluation of forces at play around him... Doris Sommer, author of Foundational Fictions: The National Romances of Latin America (University of California Press) Los Bandidos de Rio Frio is the most ample study of customs that exists in Mexican literature... nobody in Mexico has so completely covered the entire society of an epoch within the pages of a single book... Frank E. Warner, author of Historia de la novela mexicana en el siglo XIX (Editorial Porrua) ... a wild ride through tumultuous times... hang on to your hats (and wallets)! from the Preface
Download or read book The Worst of Times written by Nigel Gray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2017. This book was created as a result of the anger the author when he first encountered the arguments of a school of economic historians who claim that there was no Great Depression in Britain between the wars. Broadly, they suggest that while some traditional industries were badly affected, new ones like man-made fibres and electricity supply rose to prosperity. The gross national product increased over the period, and many people became steadily more affluent. Radio sets, seaside holidays, even family cars, became commonplace.

Download or read book Baker Bandits written by Emmett Shelton and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of first-hand accounts of the Baker Bandits, U.S. Marines on the front line of battle during the Korean War. B-1-5 was a unique company in the Korean War. The Baker Bandits fought at Inchon, Naktong, Chosin Reservoir, Guerrilla Hunts and the many numbered hills. They inspired one B Company Commander, Gen. Charlie Cooper, to the extent that when he became Commanding General of the Marines First Division in 1977, his time with B-1-5 inspired his “Band Of Brothers Leadership Principles” used widely in the Corps for many years. Emmett Shelton was a nineteen-year-old Marine Reservist in 1950. He was called to duty after graduating Austin High School and, within six months, he was a rifleman in Korea. The Korean winter of 1950 was brutal, and Emmett was evacuated shortly after Chosin due to frostbite. After the war, Emmett got on with life, then in the 1980s he attended a Chosin Few Reunion. He was overwhelmed by a need to reconnect with his old Company, his Baker Bandits. Emmett tracked down B Company members one-by-one and started a newsletter, The Guidon, to share stories and reconnect. For twenty years Emmett published The Guidon, monthly. The contributing readership grew to a high of 300, including a number of young B Company Marines fighting in Afghanistan. The Baker Bandits brings together firsthand accounts from The Guidon, written by the men of B-1-5 about their time in Korea: their battles, their fallen commanders, death in the foxhole, lost platoons, injuries, and what happened to them after the war. Praise for Baker Bandits “The accounts include writings by officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men, all of whom shared the terrible experiences of the Korean War together. This method of organizing the book is unusual, but it works well here, with a natural flow to the narrative due to careful editing and ordering. The veterans of the Korean War are almost all gone now. While their war was smaller in scope, their actions and service deserve to be remembered.” —Military Heritage Magazine “The accounts give an intensely personal look at [the marines’] experiences in the war, interspersed with historical narrative and sobering lists of casualties.” —Seapower
