Book Synopsis Cross National Policies and Practices on Computers in Education by : Tjeerd Plomp

This book was released on 2007-08-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some of the results from the second stage of lEA's study of Computers in Education (CompEd). lEA, the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, conducts international comparative studies focussing on educational achievement, practices, and policies in various countries and education systems around the world. It has a Secretariat located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. lEA studies have reported on a wide range of topics, each contributing to a deeper understanding of educational processes. The CompEd study is a project that sheds light on the way computers have been introduced in education and on how they are being used across the world today. The study proceeded in two stages with data collected for stage 1 in 1989 and for stage 2 in 1992. Results from both stages have been published in a variety of publications. This book reports about a special part of the study. Student achievement and school processes come into being in the context of the structure and the policies of national (or regional) education systems. The variety found in the CompEd results led us to ask how much might be explained by differences in these national or regional contexts. That is the reason the CompEd study took the initiative to invite the countries participating in the study, as well as some other countries that have had interesting developments in the domain of educational computers, to write a chapter describing their policies and practices regarding computers in education.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993. "A Lesson for Us All" tells of the intrigue and pressures that surrounded the introduction of the National Curriculum, the most sweeping educational reform since 1944, and examines the roles of three education secretaries: Kenneth Baker, John MacGregor and Kenneth Clarke. Duncan Graham was the man charged with introducing the new-style lessons into the 24,000 state schools in England and Wales from 1988 to 1991 when he resigned as Chairman and Chief Executive of the National Curriculum Council after deep divisions over principles with Kenneth Clarke, the Education Secretary. In collaboration with David Tytler, former Education Editor of "The Times", Mr Graham tells of the struggles with ministers, civil servants and the teacher unions to introduce the new style lessons to a tight timetable set by the Government.
Book Synopsis The Supply Story by : Sheila Galloway
Download or read book The Supply Story written by Sheila Galloway and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1994 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other book exists on supply teaching in English schools. This book is thus an agenda-setting volume which uses diverse contributions to provoke discussion of rarely articulated issues which are central to the day-to-day teaching and learning experiences of both teaching staff and pupils. Part 1 considers the individual motives and experience; Part 2 the working context and school concerns; and Part 3 analyses the role of the local education authority and supply teaching as a labour market phenomenon. Against a backcloth of rapid change, this edited volume reveals much about these professionals who work daily in schools, yet have had little attention paid in previous accounts of schooling. As women predominate in the supply teaching force, the volume spotlights women teachers' experience, but recognises the complex gender issues, and takes into account the experiences of men working as supply teachers.

Book Synopsis The Performing School by : Dennis Gleeson
Download or read book The Performing School written by Dennis Gleeson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This specially commissioned collection of perspectives offers an analysis of the new organisation of the teaching profession - reconstructed around the notion of performance and the implications of a performance culture. The Performing School examines the roots, directions and implications of the new structure by drawing together insights from policy, research and practice at this time of rapid change and debate. This unique volume addresses three interconnected issues of modernisation and education: *what is the background to and significance of performance management in modernising schools and teachers at the present time? *what are the likely future effects of a performance culture on teaching, learning and schooling? *what will it take to ensure that performance management improves pedagogy and professionality beyond the narrow confines of performativity, managerialism and market reform in education?

Book excerpt: ′Ward and Eden have produced a useful and elegant text which deserves a place on the reading list of any education degree. I certainly hope that its readership goes beyond the most obvious target audience, as anyone involved in education would do well to read and enjoy this text′ - ESCalate ′Education Policy is increasingly complex and opaque - this timely book brings clarity and reason to bear and is an ideal starting point for students and teachers struggling to understand the political world in which they work′ - Professor Stephen J Ball, Institute of Education, University of London What effect has two decades of intensive state direction and government involvement had on education? Designed for Education Studies students who have probably grown up in this context of government intervention, this book deconstructs accepted notions and provides readers with the resources to discuss critically the role of the governments in education and schooling. The book examines government policy in a series of key areas, such as the curriculum, market forces, educational inequality and race issues. Throughout it considers the political and economic factors in education policy, introducing some of the fundamental concepts required to analyse the ideologies of education and the state. The authors explore the role of education policy in the context of the general direction of government policy, politics and the economy, making links with other policy areas such as health, social services, home affairs and foreign policy. They also explain the nature of government policy in terms of a globalization and the knowledge economy.
