Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin IN the following pages I have attempted to show what a classical course can do for a boy, even though the time devoted to it be strictly limited. Many believe that classics are a good thing, but that they take up more hours Of the time-table than can be spared. This I think is an error. Chapters II., III. And IV. Contain a discussion Of the methods Of Latin teaching for the first three years. I have kept in view not only the boy with a genius for classics, who will flourish under any system, but also that Often neglected person, the average boy. The teaching Of Greek is not discussed here. I believe it should follow the lines Of Latin teaching. Progress, however, is much more rapid, because there is no need to spend time in learn ing again principles Of language already learnt in the Latin course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Latin IN the course of twelve years' experience in teaching Latin to beginners, the writer has become convinced of two facts: The first is that a textbook for secondary schools should be written from the standpoint of the secondary school, and therefore by a person who is familiar, from actual experience, with the condi tions of the classroom. Most of our textbooks for pupils begin ning Latin, however admirable in other respects, are written in such a way as to require for intelligent comprehension consider ably more maturity of judgment and understanding than the average beginner in Latin can be expected to possess. The second of these facts is that a book to be of the greatest help to the teacher, and thus secure the best results, should be so ar ranged as to enable the teacher to concentrate energy upon one thing at a time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin and Greek in the Secondary School Along with this appreciation of the substance of Roman thought went an appreciation for the form in which it was expressed. The Spirit of the day was anti-barbarous to a degree. Correctness and elegance of diction came to be a passion with the Latinists of the time. This tendency naturally went too far, and we notice the beginning of an arbitrary exaltation of the Ciceronian manner of speech as the sole example worthy of imitation, - an attitude which unfortunately, despite frequent and vigorous protest, is still widely prevalent to - day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching High-School Latin: A Handbook This little book represents a revision and enlargement of the Handbook for high-school Teachers of Latin which was published as a bulletin of the Missouri State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, in 1907, while the writer was connected with that institution as professor of Latin and Greek. That bulletin had a surprising popularity. An edition of five thousand was distributed within a short time, mainly in response to requests from all parts of the country. Even after a lapse of more than eight years, calls for Copies are frequently received. An earnest effort has been made to prepare a practical manual that will meet some of the immediate needs of the young teacher of Latin. The plans proposed represent actual experience in the high school, the normal school, and the college. They have been tested thoroughly and found effective. They do not represent a final solution of all the problems of the young teacher, but they do represent the best contribution the writer can now make to the cause of better teaching in our schools. Some of the suggestions here given were made originally by Professor C. U. Clark, director of the American Acad emy, Rome, Italy. My obligation to him is very great. Professors G. J. Laing and F. J. Miller, of the University of Chicago, did me the kindness to read the manuscript and make suggestions which have added very much to the value of the book. Their help is fully appreciated. Book excerpt: Keeping teachers up to date on recent developments in Latin scholarship Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Cicero, and Vergil are the official Advanced Placement Program Latin authors as well as standard reading for college and advanced secondary students of Latin. This book provides accessible information about recent scholarship on these authors to show how an awareness of current academic debates can enhance the teaching of their work. This is the first book aimed specifically at keeping teachers up to date on recent developments in Latin scholarship. Edited by Ronnie Ancona, a classics scholar with expertise in pedagogy, it features contributions by established authorities on each of the five Latin authors. Each essay combines theoretical material with Latin passages so that instructors can see how practically to apply these methods to specific texts. These contributions reveal many and varied ways to approach the reading and study of Latin texts while conveying the excitement of recent scholarship. A practical sourcebook for busy teachers who wish to keep abreast of current critical thought, A Concise Guide to Teaching Latin Literature contributes to the ongoing conversation between pedagogy and scholarship as it shows ways to broaden students’ appreciation of these timeless classics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Syntax of High-School Latin The joint authors Of the work recognize that it has serious limitations if viewed as a philological study; in fact, very few Of the collaborators are professed students Of Latin syntax; they are merely hard-working teachers Of Latin bent on making Latin teaching more economical and effective. From the point Of View Of statistical method which aims to ascertain main tendencies and important divergences rather than minute differences there need be no question that the results have a sufficiently high reliability to serve the educational purposes for which they are intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin for Teachers of Latin The College of Education has long realized the desirability of being able to place in the hands of graduates of the University about to enter the teaching profession some manual of immediate and practical value. The present bulletin for Latin teachers is the first to be issued. It is hoped that in the near future it will be possible to Offer similar bulletins on each of the major high school studies. These bulletins can not undertake to give detailed considerations of special methods or of the many other important matters which are treated in the regular teachers' or special-meth ods courses at the University. They are designed, however, to present a summary of the best books and materials available to teachers of the various subjects. In some cases, as in the present bulletin by Mr. Pike, a particular method which has attracted widespread attention will be discussed. In most cases, however, these bulletins will confine themselves to those problems which confront the beginning teacher and will discuss the concrete aids at her disposal in meeting them. Altho they are primarily for the novice in the teaching profession, it is hoped that they will prove of help to others. Any suggestions which increase their usefulness for this purpose will be welcomed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Latin Teachers By the constant study of sentences, the interrelation of whose words are concretely and strikingly indicated by in ec tions and terminations, by continued practice in seeing the logical relations between these parts of the sentence as he must do in a translation from the Latin, and by building up the endings and arranging words in order as the writing of Latin prose demands, the pupil acquires a basis of familiarity with language relations in general which should conduce to a greater ability not only in the English class room, but in any language work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collar and Daniell's First Year Latin The book that is placed in the hands of a pupil during his first year of the study of Latin should be simple and clear and interesting in its treatment of the language; it should teach with.the utmost thoroughness those principles that it attempts to teach, but it should not attempt to teach to-day what may be taught more properly to-morrow; it should get the pupil into the reading of easy connected Latin as soon as possible, and for this purpose should supply a generous amount of material graded to his attainment; and it should never allow the pupil to leave the classroom without a reminder of the extent to which Latin is a part of his own language.
