Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English Literature in Secondary Schools This little book was originally projected by Mr. A. C. Guthkelch, of King's College, and was to be written by us in common. The pressure of other work prevented him from carrying out his share of the undertaking, and, at the request of the publishers, I took up the work alone. For the plan of the book I am mainly, and for the execution entirely, responsible. Mr. Guthkelch's originality and accurate scholarship would have produced a very different kind of book, and the chapters which follow can have little or nothing to offer to the trained teacher of literature; but there are many who, without special training, have to teach literature as a subsidiary subject, and to them these hints and suggestions of method may be useful. My aim has been practical guidance, rather than originality. Doubtless the results of my own reading will be found imbedded in what I have here written, and for this I need make no apology; I have not, however, consulted for this present purpose, nor consciously drawn upon any books of reference or histories of literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature for Secondary Schools By an arrangement of type the book is adapted for various courses of study. It will probably be enough for beginners to keep to the larger type, and it may even be advisable for the teacher to restrict their studies to a selection of the more important authors. In a book of this kind, involving the record of thou sands of facts, it is impossible that perfect accuracy can at once, if at last, be attained. It is as accurate, s0'far as it goes, as I have been able by a considerable amount of reading and study to make it. I shall be thankful to receive notes of correction, and any suggestions that I may be favored with will be carefully considered. In its preparation I have necessarily been indebted to many writers. Where my obligations are so manifold and various, it would be invidious to particularize them; but I cannot avoid expressing my indebtedness, direct or indirect, to the professorial teaching and published work of Professor Masson, of Edinburgh. Whatever of merit the book contains is largely due to him; the faults are my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English in the Secondary School The present is beyond doubt a period of significant change in the field of secondary education. Under perfect conditions, gradual and continuous readjust ment to the changing demands of -a dynamic society should be characteristic of education at all times. In the past, however, perfect conditions have never obtained and in all probability the future will fail to provide them. The history of education shows clearly that the school does not promptly react to changes in social demands, that educational readjustment is seldom gradual, and that desirable changes in education, neglected for the time, gradually increase in number and importance until by the pressure of accumulated force they compel extensive and' radical reorganization at irregular intervals. There is every evidence that the present is one of those periods when the accumulation of long-needed changes is compel ling radical readjustment in the secondary school as well as in other departments of the system of educa tion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions to Teachers of English in the Secondary Schools Attention has been directed of late to the lamentable condition of English instruction in the secondary schools. It is discovered not only that English has been neglected for other subjects, but that English is, itself, especially difficult to teach. That English has been neglected is the fault of parents and the general public more than of teachers. In the majority of American homes little or no reading of the English classics obtains; and insistance upon the use of pure English in speaking and writing is left generally to the schools. That English is difficult to teach follows from the ease with which both teacher and pupil may shirk the English lesson. The instructor has a smattering of the subject; the pupil thinks that he knows all about it. Each is prone to contemn what appears to be easy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature Teaching in Schools: Two Lectures With Examples If we were to inquire, in any hundred English schools taken at random, whether Literature formed a part of the regular school course, I think we should get positive, very positive, answers in the affirmative from at least ninety-nine. And yet I am prepared to maintain that at least ninety-eight of the ninety-nine answers would be wrong. There are hardly any schools in England, in which Literature, used as literature forms any part of the regular education. Works in many languages, by many famous writers - in Latin, in Greek, in French, in German, and frequently in English - are indeed employed in almost every school above the rank of an infant school. But employed how? As lay-figures for lessons in vocabulary, in construction, in philology, in antiquarianism, and all the rest of old Dryasdust's pet subjects; but as lessons in thought and imagination, in the art of expression, in the beauty and power of speech, never, or very nearly never. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach English Classics: Suggestions for Study, Questions, Comments, and Composition Assignments, on the Books for Careful Study on the List of College Entrance Requirements The problem Of teaching English literature to pupils In the secondary schools Is not to be considered an easy task. To approach the work with the misconception that it need be fraught with little effort or anxiety is a sure method of steering directly toward disaster. But to say that it ris difficult, and to urge that it demands painstaking labor, is not to stigmatize it. Rather because of these inherent hindrances we can assert that it is supremely interesting, and that the task can be made to yield genuine pleasure and constant enlightenment. TO discuss in a general way how joyful and intelligent interest may be made to per. Vade the difficult task Of teaching English literature to pupils Othigh-school age is the Object of this Introduction, This discussion will be adequate only when, together, we have answered the general query, What are the essential principles which should guide instruction in English liter ature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sources of Interest in High School English The purpose of this book is to show what relation literature bears to the youth. The subject is treated from the standpoint of the various types of literary art forms with a view to determine how the different elements of this art interest the readers, and at what stage of development they are most potent. The particular field covered is the high school period, but the grade immediately preceding this has also been considered, in order to show the transition from grammar to secondary schools. The general subject - relation of literature to children - has been treated before, but under different school conditions and with a different literary purpose in view. Clark Wissler (Pedagogical Seminary, vol. 5) conducted an investigation of the reading of some 2000 children in Indiana schools, based upon the selections in the class readers, from the second to the fifth year. He deals with children of an earlier age than those considered in this book, and he makes no attempt to find elements of interest in the several classes of literature; but his classification of selections is practically the same as this, and the choice of literary works shown in his report is of interest for comparison with that of older pupils. Clara Vostrovsky made a study of the library reading of 1200 Stockton children ranging in age from 9 to 19 years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature Uring the last few years the importance of English Literature in any system of education - whether Primary, Secondary, or University - has been gradually recognised. And, partly as a consequence of this recognition, there is an increasing number of older readers who desire to know a little more' about our great authors and their works. Among the many excellent works dealing with English Literature, there appears to be room for something between a mere primer on the one hand, and a long and advanced history of literature on the other. The present volume, written in a simple style with as few technicalities as possible, is designed to fill this inter mediate position. It is primarily intended for pupils in the Upper Forms of Secondary Schools, but it will be found equally suitable for the general reader. Its aim is to review in a general but critical manner the ground work of English Literature. Special attention has therefore been paid to the course of development of our literature, to the general characteristics of each period, and to the external influences which have from time to time affected its progress. The work and style of the greater authors have been discussed somewhat fully, and brief illustrative extracts from their works have been added. Lesser authors have been treated in due pro portion, care having been taken not to crowd the book with names, dates, or unimportant details. Questions have been appended to each chapter some of these are of a simple nature, whilst others are intended for those who are able to give further thought and study to the subject.
