Book excerpt: Designed to reform contemporary British society, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele’s The Tatler (1709-1711) and The Spectator (1711-1712, 1714) rely heavily on the representation of contemporary manners. In shaping such behavioural images, the authors made use of the satirical character sketch. Their character sketches (re)create social interactions between fictionalised representatives of moral types of men and women located in contemporary London. This study examines how Addison and Steele employed the character sketch to create a ‘cosmography’ of (wo)man by actively engaging with the observational approaches of contemporary naturalists. Addison and Steele adapted distinctly empirical methods (e.g. induction and deduction, note taking, repeated and collective observation) and appropriated the (medico-legal) case study to communicate and disseminate socio-moral knowledge. At the same time, the character sketch served them as a means to establish a taxonomic order of the socio-moral knowledge conveyed in the texts. The study sheds new light on the literary techniques and the methodological frameworks of two journals essentially associated with the British - and the European - Enlightenment.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Gossip Girl series brings her sharp-eyed and irresistible wit to this “quirky novel of lovable misfits” (Publishers Weekly) chronicling a year in the lives of four families in an upscale Brooklyn neighborhood as they seek purpose and community—until one unforgettable night at a raucous neighborhood party knocks them to their senses. Welcome to Cobble Hill. In this eclectic Brooklyn neighborhood, private storms brew amongst four married couples and their children. There’s ex-groupie Mandy, so underwhelmed by motherhood and her current physical state that she fakes a debilitating disease to get the attention of her skateboarding, ex-boyband member husband Stuart. There’s the unconventional new school nurse, Peaches, on whom Stuart has an unrequited crush, and her disappointing husband Greg, who wears noise-cancelling headphones—everywhere. A few blocks away, Roy, a well-known, newly transplanted British novelist, has lost the thread of his next novel and his marriage to indefatigable Wendy. Around the corner, Tupper, the nervous, introverted industrial designer with a warehouse full of prosthetic limbs struggles to pin down his elusive artist wife Elizabeth. Throw in two hormonal teenagers, a ten-year-old pyromaniac, a drug dealer pretending to be a doctor, and a lot of hidden cameras, and you’ve got a combustible mix of egos, desires, and secrets bubbling in brownstone Brooklyn. “Breezy, witty, and compulsively fun to read” (Kirkus Reviews), Cobble Hill is highly entertaining portrait of contemporary family life and the colorful characters who call Brooklyn home.

Book excerpt: The Tatler, spanning four volumes, represents a pivotal anthology in the development of eighteenth-century periodical literature, showcasing an array of essays that blend satire, cultural critique, and moral insight with unparalleled wit. Edited and largely written by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, this collection marks an important juncture in the evolution of English prose, exemplifying the period's gravitation towards more accessible and socially reflective forms of writing. The included pieces traverse a wide array of topicsfrom manners and morals to politics and poetrymaking it a cornerstone in the tapestry of English literature, not only for its stylistic diversity but also for its significant contribution to the periodical essay as a genre. Addison and Steele's backgrounds as politicians and playwrights, combined with their profound understanding of social etiquette and public morality, significantly shape the thematic core of The Tatler. Their joint endeavor reflects the broader Enlightenment ideals of reason, critique, and the pursuit of knowledge through accessible means. Their collaborative work in this anthology aligns with major cultural and literary movements of their time, offering a nuanced and eclectic exploration of eighteenth-century society, its follies, and its virtues. For readers seeking an entry into the rich tapestry of eighteenth-century English literature, The Tatler presents a unique compendium of insightful and timeless essays. This anthology offers a rare opportunity to engage with the evolving literary tastes and social commentaries of the era, brought vividly to life by two of its most astute observers. Beyond its historical significance, the collection serves as a portal to understanding the complex interplay between literature, society, and individual identity during a period of profound intellectual and cultural transformation. It is recommended for its educational value, its array of literary styles, and the enduring relevance of its themes.

Book excerpt: 'The most entertaining book of the year' Sunday Times _____________________________________________________ Diana touched your elbow, your arm, covered your hand with hers. It was alluring. And she was disarmingly confiding. "Can I ask you something? Nicholas, please be frank..." Over his thirty-year career at Condé Nast, Nicholas Coleridge has witnessed it all. From the anxieties of the Princess of Wales to the blazing fury of Mohamed Al-Fayed, his story is also the story of the people who populate the glamorous world of glossy magazines. With relish and astonishing candour, he offers the inside scoop on Tina Brown and Anna Wintour, David Bowie and Philip Green, Kate Moss and Beyonce; on Margaret Thatcher's clothes legacy, and a surreal weekend away with Bob Geldof and William Hague. Cara Delevingne, media tycoons, Prime Ministers, Princes, Mayors and Maharajas - all cross his path. His career in magazines straddles the glossies throughout their glorious zenith - from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s to the digital iterations of the 21st century. Having cut his teeth on Tatler, and as Editor-in-Chief of Harpers & Queen, he became the Mr Big of glossy publishing for three decades. Packed with surprising and often hilarious anecdotes, The Glossy Years also provides perceptive insight into the changing and treacherous worlds of fashion, journalism, museums and a whole sweep of British society. This is a rich, honest, witty and very personal memoir of a life splendidly lived. __________________________________________________________ 'An entertaining whirlwind' Evening Standard 'Gentle, jolly . . . Blissfully funny' Sunday Telegraph 'An irresistible read, hilarious, honest and insightful. I adored it' Tina Brown 'Sparkling' Spectator 'Forthright, witty and gossipy . . . a passion for glossy magazines shines through this effervescent memoir' Sunday Express

Using cross-cultural comparisons, Joad Raymond establishes an agenda for answering crucial questions central to the future histories of the political and literary culture of early-modern Britain: * What is the relationship between the circulation of news in Britain and communication networks elsewhere in Europe? * Was the British development of the media unique? * What are the specific rhetorical properties of news-communication in seventeeth-century Britain? * What was the relationship between commerce and politics? * How do local exchanges of news relate to national practices and institutions? Previously published as a special issue of the journal Media History, this book is compulsory reading for researchers and students of European history and media studies alike.
