Book Synopsis Mirza Haidar Dughlat as Depicted in Persian Sources by : Mansura Haidar
Download or read book Mirza Haidar Dughlat as Depicted in Persian Sources written by Mansura Haidar and published by Manohar Publishers and Distributors. This book was released on 2002 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirza Muhammad Haidar Dughlat, a maternal cousin of Babur, widely known for his magnum opus the Tarikh-i-Rashidi, was a man of many parts. His contribution to the development of fine arts had remained in oblivion till the Kazakhs decided to designate him as their national writer. He played an important role both in the making and depiction of Mughal history. His dedication and selfless service to the Mughals and the cultural heritage left behind by him in Kashmir, which he conquered and ruled for ten years, are recorded in the annals. Several important documents from different contemporary and later Indo-Persian sources are reproduced here both in the original as well as in English translations. Haidar Dughlat may have failed to win the approbation of his master but the legacy that he left behind still survives. This is amply illustrated in the documents written by the court historians and chroniclers put together in this volume.

Book Synopsis Persian Historiography across Empires by : Sholeh A. Quinn
Download or read book Persian Historiography across Empires written by Sholeh A. Quinn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persian served as one of the primary languages of historical writing over the period of the early modern Islamic empires of the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals. Historians writing under these empires read and cited each other's work, some moving from one empire to another, writing under different rival dynasties at various points in time. Emphasising the importance of looking beyond the confines of political boundaries in studying this phenomenon, Sholeh A. Quinn employs a variety of historiographical approaches to draw attention to the importance of placing these histories not only within their historical context, but also historiographical context. This comparative study of Persian historiography from the 16th-17th centuries presents in-depth case analyses alongside a wide array of primary sources written under the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals to illustrate that Persian historiography during this era was part of an extensive universe of literary-historical writing.

Book Synopsis The Topkapi Scroll by : Gülru Necipoğlu
Download or read book The Topkapi Scroll written by Gülru Necipoğlu and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.
