Book excerpt: After the United States declared war against Germany in April 1917, the US Army established the Tank Corps to help break the deadlock of trench warfare in France during World War I. The army envisioned having a large tank force by 1919, but when the war ended in November 1918, only three tank battalions had participated in combat operations. Shortly after, Brigadier General Samuel D. Rockenbach, Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Tank Corps under General John J. Pershing, issued a memorandum to many of his officers to write brief accounts of their experiences that would supplement official records. Their narratives varied in size, scope, and depth, and covered a range of topics, including the organizing, training, and equipping of the tank corps. For the first time since these reports were submitted, Pershing's Tankers: Personal Accounts of the AEF Tank Corps in World War I presents an unprecedented look into the experiences of soldiers in the US Army Tank Corps. The book provides fresh insight into the establishment and combat operations of the tank corps, including six personal letters written by Colonel George S. Patton, Jr., who commanded a tank brigade in World War I. Congressional testimony, letters, and a variety of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles in this collection provide additional context to the officers' revealing accounts. Based on completely new sources that include official US Army personnel reports that were previously unknown to researchers, this illuminating work offers a vivid picture of life and activities in the US Army Tank Corps in France. Revealed is a rare glimpse into the thoughts and experiences of a broad cross-section of men from the senior leadership down to the platoon level, and a behind-the-scenes look into how this first generation of "tankers" helped develop new war-fighting capabilities for the US Army.

Book excerpt: In the seventy years that have passed since the tank first appeared, antitank combat has presented one of the greatest challenges in land warfare. Dramatic improvements in tank technology and doctrine over the years have precipitated equally innovative developments in the antitank field. One cycle in this ongoing arms race occurred during the early years of World War II when the U.S. Army sought desperately to find an antidote to the vaunted German blitzkrieg. This Leavenworth Paper analyzes the origins of the tank destroyer concept, evaluates the doctrine and equipment with which tank destroyer units fought, and assesses the effectiveness of the tank destroyer in battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations of the Tank Corps A.E.F. is the definitive treatise on the American Tank Corps in World War I, written by Brigadier General Samuel D. Rockenbach, its first commander. Commonly referred to as "The Rockenbach Report," only a few typed copies are known to exist. It has never been published-until now. Much has been published about one of Rockenbach's subordinate officers at the time, the famous World War II commander George S. Patton, Jr. But General Rockenbach is a much less familiar figure historically although he was hand-picked by General John J. Pershing to design, organize, man, train and deploy Tanks into 1918 France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. Written in the same month as the Armistice was signed, General Rockenbach relates his experiences in developing and fielding this fearsome new combat arm, candidly citing the challenges as well as the victories. Appended to the original-and included here-are supporting documents, presented in their entirety. Significant portions of these documents are either paraphrased or directly quoted in the main body of the Report. This is especially true in the chapters pertaining to operations at the Battle of St. Mihiel and in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. These are the unedited versions. They include the organization and manning list for the Tank Corps as of September 10, 1918, operations reports from the 304th (1st Provisional) Tank Brigade (commanded by George S. Patton, Jr.) and the 1st French Brigade on the Battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Also included is complete text of the operations report from the 301st American Tank Battalion, which had been allotted to the Australian Corps.

Book excerpt: Includes more than 30 maps, plans and diagrams The world-renowned military expert Major-General J.F.C. Fuller DSO, noted for his many works on military strategy, tactics and history, turns his attention to the famed Royal Tank Corps of World War I. He was in a particularly good position to write such a work as he served from 1916 as part of the Tanks Corps and planned the famous tank attack at Cambrai in 1917, he also took a leading role in the planning of the 1918 autumn offensives that broke the back of German resistance and ended the War. He covers in comprehensively the development of the tank, mechanical characteristics of early British tanks, particularly the Mark I, as well as the early battles at the Somme and Ancre. He also describes the growth of the Tank Corps itself, tank tactics, tank engineering plus the tank battles in 1917-1918. There are also appreciations of German, French and American tank activities.

Using the same basic tanks as the US Army, notably the M3 and M5A1 light tanks and the M4 Sherman medium tank, the marines made both technical and tactical innovations to make them more effective in the fight against the Japanese. Deep wading equipment, flamethrower tanks, and even wooden armor all became part of the Marine arsenal. This book examines the tactics and technology that made the US Marine Corps tank service unique in the annals of warfare.

Book excerpt: “A comprehensive analysis of WWII’s greatest land battle and one of history’s greatest armor engagements.” —Publishers Weekly On July 5, 1943, the greatest land battle in history began when Nazi and Red Army forces clashed near the town of Kursk, on the western border of the Soviet Union. Code named “Operation Citadel,” the German offensive would cut through the bulge in the eastern front that had been created following Germany’s retreat at the Battle of Stalingrad. But the Soviets, well-informed about Germany’s plans through their network of spies, had months to prepare. Two million men supported by six thousand tanks, thirty-five thousand guns, and five thousand aircrafts convened in Kursk for an epic confrontation that was one of the most important military engagements in history, the epitome of “total war.” It was also one of the most bloody, and despite suffering seven times more casualties, the Soviets won a decisive victory that became a turning point in the war. With unprecedented access to the journals and testimonials of the officers, soldiers, political leaders, and citizens who lived through it, The Battle of the Tanks is the definitive account of an epic showdown that changed the course of history. “A stellar account of the Battle of Kursk in 1943.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: "The Rockenbach Report: Operations of the Tank Corps A.E.F." is widely cited and quoted by historians but only a few typed copies are known to exist. It has never been published--until now. Here is the verbatim transcript of that famous document, written by the Father of the American Tank Corps, Samuel D. Rockenbach. In it he details how he designed, organized, manned, trained and finally deployed American Tank forces into the Western Front of 1918 Europe. Appended to the original Rockenbach Report--and reprinted here--are supporting documents with even more information on those early Tank Corps days. These include after-action reports on the St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Le Catelet-Bony offensives by: Lieutenant Colonel George S. Patton, Jr., Commander of 304th Tank Brigade; Colonel Wahl, Commander of French Tanks assigned to American forces; Major Sereno E. Brett (who assumed command of the 304th after Patton was wounded at St. Mihiel); and Major R. I. Sasse, Commander of the 301st Battalion fighting with the British E.F. Also included is an organization chart of 1st Army Tank Corps as of September 10, 1918 listing its units and names of officers assigned. This report may be 100 years old, but it is still relevant today. The lessons learned then--how to wage a war, even while fundamentally changing the way that war is fought--are even more valuable in today's constantly changing and ever more dangerous world. For too long the Rockenbach Report has been available to only the lucky few able to travel to one of the rare sites where it is stored. With this reprint, Rockenbach's exhaustive treatise on the development of early tank warfare is available to the larger public. So save yourself the trip. Here is the Rockenbach Report.
