He seemed to have taken up residence at the old stone wall and he was very strange. The other neighbors had never seen the likes of him before. He wore striped trousers with eight pants legs to accommodate each of his eight very long legs. They called him Daddy Longlegs. "He's hard of hearing," said one of the neighbors. "Only when he wants to avoid answering questions!" said someone else. Yes Daddy Longlegs was very strange. And so the adventure begins. Venture into another delightful tale by Arthur Scott Bailey and illustrated by Harry L. Smith, as the story unfolds and gentle lessons are taught. Short chapters make this charming tale ideal for bedtime reading. Edited and presented for a new generation of young readers and for little hands to hold and to love. Nonviolent reading, recommended for ages 4-8 years old.

All petty responsibilities of the kids at the orphanage rest on her tender shoulders. One fine day, her mundane life undergoes a surprising change when an unknown trustee of the orphanage offers to pay for her college education as he is very impressed by one of her essays! He promises her a liberal monthly allowance and insists on being anonymous. His only condition is that Jerusha should send him monthly letters and keep him posted about her life in college, but not to expect any replies from him. What follows is an insight into Jerusha’s unexplored, fascinating world of college life through the letters that she writes to her unknown benefactor. She addresses him adoringly as “Daddy-Long-Legs” as she had seen his long shadow once while he was leaving the asylum. She shares a love–hate–anger–gratitude relationship with him. Finally, at the end of the story, the identity of Daddy-Long-Legs is revealed. Is her godfather someone familiar or a total stranger?

Book excerpt: John Price appears to have thrown in the towel. He has spent the last year struggling to support his family, neglecting to spend time with his wife and children, and becoming increasingly cynical about the degraded state of the natural world around him. After a heart-attack scare, however, his wife demands that he start appreciating all the "good things" in his life: their mouse-infested old house, their hopelessly overgrown yard, and most of all, the joys and humiliations of parenthood. In his quest to become a better father, Price faces many unexpected challenges—like understanding his grandmother’s decision to die, and supporting his nature-loving sons’ decision to make their home a "no-kill zone" for all living creatures. Still he finds the second chance he was looking for—to save himself and, perhaps, his small corner of an imperfect yet still beautiful world.

Book excerpt: The first Wednesday in every month was a Perfectly Awful Day-a day to be awaited with dread, endured with courage and forgotten with haste. Every floor must be spotless, every chair dustless, and every bed without a wrinkle. Ninety-seven squirming little orphans must be scrubbed and combed and buttoned into freshly starched ginghams; and all ninety-seven reminded of their manners, and told to say, "Yes, sir," "No, sir," whenever a Trustee spoke.

Book excerpt: Dear Enemy is the sequel to novel Daddy-Long-Legs and follows the story of Sallie McBride, Judy Abbott's classmate and best friend in Daddy-Long-Legs. Dear Enemy shows how Sallie McBride grows from a frivolous socialite to a mature woman and an able executive. It also follows the development of Sallie's relationships with Gordon Hallock, a wealthy politician, and Dr. Robin MacRae, the orphanage's physician, (to whom Sallie addresses her letters: "Dear Enemy"). Both relationships are affected by Sallie's initial reluctance to commit herself to her job, and by her gradual realization of how happy the work makes her and how incomplete she'd feel without it.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest heroes of the Cross in this centuryEric Liddell, hero of the film Chariots of Fire, risked becoming a national disgrace at the 1924 Paris Olympics when he refused to run on a Sunday. Disqualifying himself from the finals, Britain's hope of a medal was sacrificed as well. But the thinly veiled criticism in the press turned to sensational acclaim when Eric entered&—and won&—a race for which he was completely untrained, finishing a full five meters ahead of the favorite. He was a celebrity, but the faith which had inspired his courageous stand stirred in him again, and at the height of his fame he announced that he was leaving athletics to return as a missionary to the land of his birth, China. This story of "God's Athlete" makes for exciting reading. From renowned Scottish athlete to missionary in China.

He was the author of more than forty children's books. He was born in St. Albans, Vermont, United States. His father owned a dry goods shop that was stated to be "one of the most reputable of St. Albans mercantile concerns" and specialized in furs; namely ladies' fur coats, muffs and scarves. Bailey attended St. Albans Academy and graduated in 1896. He then went on to the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, where he became involved in a fraternal organization, Sigma Phi (with which he was very active through at least 1915; he joined the organization's Catalogue Committee in 1914 as a vice chairman, after the resignation of Dr. Alexander Duane).
