It will appear more clearly in the sequel, that all those of our ideas which are knowledge, are mental representatives of entities; i. E., of things, and their relations, existing in na ture; and can be Obtained, originally, in no other way than by the careful examination Of entities themselves. Hence, however knowledge already acquired may afterward be combined and arranged, the only accurate method of obtaining its original elements is by patient successive examinations of those entities of which we wish to Obtain a knowl edge. After such a careful examination of all the facts in the case has been made, and we have thus obtained accurate mental representatives of them all; then, and not until then, can we with certainty decide, whether or not any supposed property or law belongs to them all. That method of philoso phizing, therefore, which affirms a general law after the examination of a few facts, must forever be inse cure, and tend to obstruct the progress of any science. Most branches of it have been ably discussed by successive writers of ancient and modern times. As a science, however, it may be considered as of modern date. Locke, Reid, Stewart, Brown, Kant, Cousin, and many others, have contributed to develop and establish its principles, and to diffuse a knowledge of them through the civilized world. Minds are as legitimate objects of knowledge, as material objects. The doctrines of mental philosophy, are not mere matters of conjecture and opinion, any more than those of mathematics and physics. The amount of knowledge attained and attainable, respecting minds, is much greater than many suppose. Much knowledge, however, that is actually attained by some, is far less extensively diffused than its importance demands; and other and higher truths belonging to this department of science, which are fully within the grasp of human reason, are yet unattained. In the present work, considerable improvements have been attempted, in the theory of sensations, ideas, affections, and of the will; and in the general division and arrangement of mental phenomena. In each of the generic departments of mental philosophy, particularly in that of ideas, it is believed that the doctrines of the following pages are in advance of the existing state of mental philosophy, as it appears in any other work. Whether this is really the case or not, and in what degree it is the case, if it is so at all, is submitted to the judgment of candid and competent critics, and to the still higher judgment of the public at large, by which that of the most enlightened individual critics is sometimes justly reversed. Two facts render the treatises in common use unadapted, particularly to the two purposes last named. Such treatises, in the first place, are too large for common use. Then, with hardly any exceptions, they treat of but one department of the mind, the Intellect. The object of the following treatise is to remedy both these defects - to furnish a work sufficiently ample for a clear elucidation of the whole subject, and, at the same time, so concise as not to overburden the mind of the pupil, on the one hand, and, on the other, to furnish a full knowledge of the entire system of Mental Science, the Philosophy, not of the Intellect merely, but also of the Sensibility and Will. It is fully believed by the Author, and he states this as the result of some thirty years' experience in teaching the science, that every pupil, not only in our College classes, but every advanced student in our Academies and High Schools, is capable of fully mastering this treatise, and that when he has done so, he will have attained not only to a distinct understanding of the different faculties of the mind, but also of the varied functions of each of those faculties.
