Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development and widespread use of large digital computers, which are switching circuits, there has been an increasing interest in switch ing circuit theory. Much effort has been spent in designing or synthesizing switching circuits, but unfortunately many of the procedures now in use are more of an art than a science in that much insight and experience are usually required on the part of the designer. Some systematic de sign methods have been introduced but these are only applicable to rather small circuits. This thesis develops and presents an algorithm for synthesizing asynchronous sequential switching circuits. The algorithm has certain properties which make it useful and applicable to large switching circuits such as the control unit of a digital computer. The steps in the algorithm are systematic and simple permitting a solution to be obtained in a relatively short amount of time. The resulting design is not optimum in that the circuit has the minimum number of states or minimum amount of logic. (Author).

Topics covered are the synthesis of permutation machines with threshold elements, in particular one threshold element per memory element; a method of synthesis in which the combinational logic of any sequential circuit may be realized by means of a cascaded arrangement of S-input, S-output logic blocks (S denotes number of state variables). That approach has applicability in integrated circuit realization of computers. Other topics are in the synthesis of sequential switching circuits in shift-register form. (Author).

Book excerpt: The problem is considered of synthesizing switching circuits that compute a given, completely specified switching function, and a new point of view is adopted in which switching circuits are considered to be realizations of algorithms rather than interpretations of truth-functional formulae. A restricted class of algorithms, called the cascade algorithms, is identified; it is suggested that tree and collapsed-tree, iterative, multiple-iterative sequential, and cascaded-sequential switching circuits may be viewed as realizations of cascade algorithms. All of these circuits are called, therefore, cascade circuits. Three basic techniques--functional decomposition, merging, and skipping-which permit the synthesis of efficient cascade algorithms to compute a given function, are described. It is then shown how these techniques may be applied so as to synthesize a collapsedtree, iterative, multiple-iterative, sequential, or cascaded-sequential switching circuit that computes a given switching function. Examples are drawn from the technology of current-steering devices, such as relays and cryotrons, but the method is applicable to other technologies. The procedures appear to be well adapted to execution on contemporary digital computers. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis covers the basic topics of switching theory and logic synthesis in fourteen chapters. Chapters 1 through 5 provide the mathematical foundation. Chapters 6 through 8 include an introduction to sequential circuits, optimization of sequential machines and asynchronous sequential circuits. Chapters 9 through 14 are the main feature of the book. These chapters introduce and explain various topics that make up the subject of logic synthesis: multi-valued input two-valued output function, logic design for PLDs/FPGAs, EXOR-based design, and complexity theories of logic networks. An appendix providing a history of switching theory is included. The reference list consists of over four hundred entries. Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis is based on the author's lectures at Kyushu Institute of Technology as well as seminars for CAD engineers from various Japanese technology companies. Switching Theory for Logic Synthesis will be of interest to CAD professionals and students at the advanced level. It is also useful as a textbook, as each chapter contains examples, illustrations, and exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switching theory is concerned with the development of models and techniques for the analysis and synthesis of those circuits in which information is represented in discrete or digital form, as opposed to the analog form in which information is represented in a continuous manner. The application of digital techniques over a wider range of human activities has already profoundly affected modern life, and there is no visible limit to their future utility. This book is the outgrowth of a course on switching circuits that the author has taught since 1960, and it is designed as a text to provide a unified treatment of the subject with particular emphasis on sequential circuit theory. An attempt has been made to include only those techniques that have been generally accepted and seem to have lasting application. The first four of the nine chapters are devoted to basic principles and to combinational circuit theory. They introduce number systems, binary codes, Boolean algebra, switching functions, the analysis and synthesis of combinational gate circuits (including NAND, NOR, EXCLUSIVE-OR, and EXCLUSIVE-NOR), and threshold logic, among other topics. Also covered are algebraic, geometric, and tabular techniques for the minimization of algebraic expressions. The remainder of this book is on sequential circuit theory. A general treatment is emphasized by classification of the sequential-circuit operation as either fundamental mode or pulse mode, and as either clocked or not clocked. A comparison of the two modes is enhanced by design examples in which the same problem specifications are used for each mode. Both algebraic and tablular techniques are presented for the analysis and synthesis of these circuits. The timely topics of control states and register transfers in sequential design are included. The book closes with a discussion of sequential-circuit minimization associated with the reduction of flow tables, and the state-assignment problem. Answers are provided to selected problems.
