A rhombohedral unit cell is observed for KReF[sub 6]. Fluoride ion capture by Lewis acids from the hexafluorometallate (IV) salts affords high purity tetrafluorides for M = Mo, Re, Ru, Os, and Pd. The structure of RuF[sub 4] is determined from X-ray synchrotron and neutron powder data. Unit cells based on theorthorhombic PdF[sub 4] type cell are derived from X-ray powder data for ReF[sub 4] and OsF[sub 4]. Fluoride ion capture from KAgF[sub 4] provides the thermally unstable trifluoride as a bright, red, diamagnetic solid. The structure solution of AgF[sub 3] and redetermination of the AuF[sub 3] structure from X-ray synchrotron and neutron powder data demonstrate that the two are isostnictural. Thermal decomposition product of AgF[sub 3] is the mixed valence compound Ag[sup II]Ag[sub 2][sup III]F[sub 8]. Several new salts containing the (Ag - F)[sub n][sup n+] chain cation are prepared. The first linear (Ag - F)[sub n][sup n+] chain is observed in AgF[sup +]BF[sub 4 [sup [minus]]] which crystallizes in a tetragonal unit. AgFAuF[sub 4] has a triclinic unit cell and is isostructural with CuFAuF[sub 4]. AgFAuF[sub 6] has an orthorhombic unit cell and appears to be isostructural with AgFAsF[sub 6]. A second mixed valence silver fluoride, Ag[sup II]Ag[sup III]F[sub 5], is prepared, which magnetic measurements indicate is probably an AgF[sup +] salt. Magnetic data for all of the AgF[sup +] salts exhibit low magnitude, temperature independent paramagnetism characteristic of metallic systems. Cationic AG(II) in acidic AHF solutions is a powerful oxidizer, capable of oxidizing Xe to Xe(II) and O[sub 2] to O[sub 2][sup +]. Reactions with C[sub 6]F[sub 6] and C[sub 3]F[sub 6] suggest an electron capture mechanism for cationic AG(II) oxidations.

Highlights include new aspects of inorganic fluorine chemistry, such as new synthetic methods, structures of new fluorides and oxide fluorides, their physical and chemical properties, fluoride catalysts, surface modifications of inorganic materials by fluorination process, new energy conversion materials and industrial applications. Fluorine has quite unique properties (highest electronegativity; very small polarizability). In fact, fluorine is so reactive that it forms fluorides with all elements except with the lightest noble gases helium, neon and argon. Originally, due to its high reactivity, fluoride chemistry faced many technical difficulties and remained undeveloped for many years. Now, however, a large number of fluorine-containing materials are currently produced for practical uses on an industrial scale and their applications are rapidly extending to many fields. Syntheses and structure analyses of thermodynamically unstable high-oxidation-state fluorides have greatly contributed to inorganic chemistry in this decade. Fluoride catalysts and surface modifications using fluorine are developing a new field of fluorine chemistry and will enable new syntheses of various compounds. The research on inorganic fluorides is now contributing to many chemical energy conversion processes such as lithium batteries. Furthermore, new theoretical approaches to determining the electronic structures of fluorine compounds are also progressing. On the industrial front, the use of inorganic fluorine compounds is constantly increasing, for example, in semi-conductor industry. "Advanced Inorganic Fluorides: Synthesis, Characterization and Applications" focuses on these new features in inorganic fluorine chemistry and its industrial applications. The authors are outstanding experts in their fields, and the contents of the book should prove to be of valuable assistance to all chemists, graduates, students and researchers in the field of fluorine chemistry.

Book excerpt: Functionalized Inorganic Fluorides: Synthesis, Characterization & Properties of Nanostructured Solids covers several classes of nanostructured and functionalized inorganic fluorides, oxide-fluorides, and fluorinated oxides such as silica and alumina. Ranging from powders or glass-ceramics to thin layers and coatings, they have applications as more efficient and less aggressive catalysts, UV absorbers, planar optical waveguides, integrated lasers and optical amplifiers, luminescent materials, anti-reflective coatings and high Tc superconductors. With a focus on new types of solids, such as nanopowders, hybrids, mesoporous fluorides, and intercalation compounds, the book covers new synthesis routes; physical-chemical characterizations - including morphology, structure, spectroscopic and optical behaviour; detailed ab initio investigations and simulations; and -last but not least- potential applications.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the synthesis and structure-property relationships of new complex metal fluorides of (i) alkaline-metal lead fluorocarbonates, alkaline-metal magnesium fluorocarbontes and (ii) a reduced niobium oxyfluoride. We have designed new structure building units, PbO6F and PbO6F2, in layered compounds of KPb2(CO3)2F and K2.70Pb5.15(CO3)5F3, that were then developed to three-dimensional noncentrosymmetric RbPbCO3F and CsPbCO3F. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on K2.70Pb5.15(CO3)5F3, RbPbCO3F and CsPbCO3F using 1064 nm radiation revealed SHG efficiencies of approximately 40, 250 and 300 x a-SiO2, respectively. The Mg2+ substitution of the Pb2+ cation in APbCO3F (A = alkaline-metal) resulted in KMgCO3F and RbMgCO3F with unique coordination environments of magnesium, i.e., pentagonal arrangements in the ab-plane. These compounds are second-harmonic generation (SHG) phase-matching at both 1064 nm (120 and 160 x a-SiO2) and 532 nm (0.33 and 0.6 x b-BaB2O4) with short UV cut-off edges, below 200 and 190 nm for KMgCO3F and RbMgCO3F, respectively. These mixed-metal fluorocarbonates were also characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis. In addition, we report a new highly correlated electron system, Nb2O2F3. It is a new low-valent niobium (III/IV) oxyfluoride that features [Nb2X10] units (X = O, F) with short (2.5739(1) Å) Nb-Nb metal-metal bonds. The [Nb2X10] units are connected through shared O/F vertices to form a 3D structure. Nb2O2F3 undergoes a structural transition (below 90 K), from a monoclinic to a triclinic structure, which can be described as a charge ordering or disproportionnation of [Nb2]7+dimers. That resulted in a doubly (2.5000(9) Å) and a singly bonded (2.6560(9) Å) Nb2 dimers. The structural change is associated with unusual field-independent ‘spin-gap-like’ magnetic and electronic phase transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research described in this thesis has mainly addressed the challenge of the synthesis of thermodynamically unstable nickel fluorides, which cannot be made by traditional thermal methods. A low-temperature approach towards the synthesis of such transition metal fluorides exploits the greater thermodynamic stability of high oxidation states in anions and involves the use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (aHF) as a solvent. The general method consists of combining an aHF soluble starting material (e.g., K2NiF6) with a Lewis fluoroacid (e.g., BF3), which precipitates a neutral polymeric solid state fluoride: 2 K + NiF62− + BF3 --> NiF4 + 2 BF4− + 2 K. At room temperature, this reaction yields a different structural phase, with composition K(subscript x)NiF3 (x (almost equal to) 0.18). This material has a pseudo-hexagonal tungsten bronze structure (H0-K(subscript x)NiF3), and is an ionic conductor, probably due to K+ ions hosted in the lattice channels. R-NiF3 is capable of fluorinating a wide range of inorganic and organic substrates. These reactions have probably shed light on the mechanism of the Simons Electrochemical Fluorination (ECF) Process, an important industrial method of fluorinating organic compounds. It has long been speculated that NiF3 plays a role in the ECF process, which uses nickel electrodes in aHF solvent. K2NiF6 also fluorinates organic compounds in aHF, but interestingly, yields different fluorinated products. The reduction of R-NiF3 and K2NiF6 during fluorination reactions yields NiF2. A method has been developed to regenerate NiF62− from NiF2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, 60 crystal structures which have been synthesised by the solvothermal method are reported, with 57 of them representing novel materials. The remaining three materials have previously been reported but have been made by a new and milder method of synthesis. Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta and Mo have all been used to make fluoride or oxyfluoride materials at temperatures ranging from 60C to 200C. Both inorganic and organic moieties ("templates") have been used to direct the formation of the (oxy)fluoride materials, usually as an anionic species. These materials have then been studied for their magnetic properties, where relevant. Initially, 10 vanadium-based compounds were made at 100C using a range of templates. Through variations in water content, temperature and cation ratio, a further 19 compounds were synthesised. The inorganic species in these structures ranged from monomers, to dimers, tetramers and chains, to infinite 2D sheets. A family of vanadium compounds has been synthesised, with piperazine as a template, which shows an increase in covalent connectivity through the increase of the reaction temperature, with a decrease in oxidation state as a result. These materials are also interrelated through the use of a "Y" shaped motif in their structural composition. Through a change in cation content a novel trigonal chain compound (related to the structure of CsCrF4) has been synthesised with piperazine which possibly shows strong geometric frustration. Vanadium oxyfluoride analogues of (VO)2P2O-- have been made, which show interesting magnetic properties with a range of different templates, ranging from alkali metal cations to the bulky protonated template trans 1,2 bis (4-pyridyl) ethene. The best fits to the magnetic susceptibility data are obtained with an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain model. Nine molybdenum-based structures have also been synthesised, with five of the structures being made through changes in the temperature and cation ratio of the reactions. An example of this is the formation of tetrameric units with ammonium, through the condensation of monomers as a result of an increase in the reaction temperature. A further 22 structures have also been made with metals, M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta. These structures have a tendency to form isolated polyhedral units under the conditions studied in this work. Several examples of isolated [MF6][superscript n-] and [MF--][superscript n-] monomers are reported and also one example of a trans-connected [TiOF4]2− infinite chain structure.
