Book excerpt: Hot rolling and heat treatment are the two industrial metallurgical applications used with compatible steels to modify mechanical properties. In this article, we studied the combined effect of hot rolling and heat treatment at constant parameters on medium carbon steels with respect to reduced thickness. For this purpose, the precasted round billets (110-mm diameter) of AISI-1045 and the square billet (110 by 110 mm) of JIS-SUP 9 were hot rolled and the thickness was reduced up to 6, 8, and 12 mm and 18, 28, and 45 mm, respectively. The hot rolled billets were subjected to heat treatment. The chemical compositions of the steels were evaluated by optical emission spectroscopy, whereas the microstructures of the samples after hot rolling and heat treatment were observed through metallography. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the samples were calculated through the tensile test. The results showed a fall in ductility and toughness with respect to reduced thickness and a rise in mechanical strength. It is noteworthy that breaking strength remained unaffected. The JIS-SUP 9 steel is a spring steel, which is the reason for its better mechanical properties (e.g., toughness and ductility) as compared with AISI-1045 steel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced high strength steels (AHSSs) for auto-making are primarily produced by rolling, plus heat treatment technologies if necessary. However, due to the metallurgical complexity of AHSSs, it is impossible to roll all of the AHSS grades in a rolling mill with the same rolling technology. Each of AHSSs has unique applications in vehicles, and specified rolling technologies are required to produce high quality AHSS products where they might be the best employed to meet performance demands of the automotive parts. Such background has prompted the publication of this scholarly book in the area of rolling of AHSSs with a purpose of providing readers with a valuable technical document that can be used in the research and development of AHSSs for automotive and other manufacturing industries. With contributors from USA, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Austria, Australia, China, India and Iran, the book highlights the latest advances in rolling technologies of AHSSs. It focuses on the theory, simulation and practice of the rolling of AHSSs: The book introduces the history, types and advances of AHSSs and their processes; proposes new theory that is applicable to the rolling of AHSSs, presents mathematical and numerical modelling of AHSSs in rolling; covers thermomechanical processing technologies of AHSSs; provides case studies on the rolling practice of the most popular AHSSs and includes other rolling-related technologies of AHSSs. The book will be useful for both theoretical and applied research aimed at AHSSs rolling technologies, and will be a scientific and valuable literature for the metallurgists, engineers, materials scientists, academics and graduate students who are studying and working with AHSSs and their rolling technologies worldwide.

Microstructural and mechanical properties of both standard and warm rolled 52100 were investigated. heat treatments, consisting of both conventional hardening treatments and isothermal transformation treatments, were conducted prior to fracture toughness, hardness, and tensile testing. Conventional hardening treatments resulted in martensitic structures with low toughness; prior warm rolling resulted in the rolled materials exhibiting both higher hardness and toughness than the standard 52100 in the hardened condition. Isothermal transformation treatments resulted in substantially improved toughness, especially in the material processed at 300 C. (Author).

Book excerpt: For Poly-crystalline metals, Grain boundary design plays an important role to achieve desired mechanical properties in the final product form which may be a hot rolled or cold rolled coil. The fundamental mechanical properties are yield and tensile strengths, elongation and formability where grain refinement is particularly attractive mechanism for property design. Grain boundary strengthening provides benefits both in terms of fracture toughness and mechanical behavior at lower temperatures particularly in case of hot rolled high strength structural and line pipe steels. For cold rolled steels, grain boundary effects play a crucial role in critical automotive application steels such as Bake Hardening Index in Bake-hardening Steels. Additionally, deep drawability and formability characteristics are also strongly dependent upon grain size. Mechanical properties in steels are controlled majorly by two techniques - chemical composition and Steel processing parameters. Through first method of chemical composition control, during hot rolling, the control of austenite grain size is accomplished, alongside retardation of phase transformation to lower temperature. In second method, steel manufacturing process parameters i.e. hot rolling and coil cooling parameters, cold reduction, and subsequent heat treatment parameters such as annealing play an important role.

Book excerpt: The objective of this publication is to comprehensively discuss the possibilities of producing steels with pre-determined attributes, demanded by the customer to fit exacting specifications. The information presented in the book has been designed to indicate the reasons for the expenses and to aid in the process of overcoming the difficulties and reducing the costs. In nine detailed chapters, the authors cover topics including: • steel as a major contributor to the economic wealth of a country in terms of its capabilities and production • current concerns of major steel producers • phenomena contributing to the quality of the product • information concerning the boundary conditions of the rolling process and initial conditions, put to use by mathematical models • the solid state incremental approach and flow formulation • parameters and variables - most of which make use of the exponential nature of phenomena that are activated by thermal energy • the application of three dimensional analysis to shape rolling • the evaluation of parameters by a form of inverse analysis to the flat rolling process • knowledge based modeling, using artificial intelligence, expert systems and neural networks They conclude that when either mathematical or physical modeling of the rolling process is considered and the aim is to satisfy the demands for customers, it is possible to produce what the customer wants, exactly.

Book excerpt: Today, most wire springs for automotive applications are made of high strength medium carbon silicon chromium steels. Apart from high strength and good ductility the SiCr steels exhibit good sag resistance. Conventional heat treatment does not exploit the maximum potential of existing steel grades. It is known that thermomechanical treatment results in a superior combination of strength and fatigue. Impurity elements (e.g. phosphorous) and elements such as copper, which is introduced due to the increased use of scrap, can deteriorate the mechanical properties. Within the framework of the presented doctoral thesis the effects of phosphorous, copper and tin on a SiCr spring steel were investigated for different process parameters. Based on systematic variation of chemical composition and process parameters an understanding of the final material properties as a function of the microstructure is developed. The thermomechanical treatments proposed here improve the strength, ductility and fatigue at the same time. Because most industrial coil spring production is automatized, it is possible to integrate a forming step into the production, namely after austenitization and before coiling of the wire or rod to the coil spring. One of the proposed thermomechanical processes which was derived from the results presented in the present thesis was decorated with the steel innovation prize of the Steel Institute (see www.stahl-info.de*). * full link: http://www.stahl-info.de/stahlinnovationspreis/stahlinnovationspreis_2006/preistraeger/barani_mpi/barani_mpi_3.htm
