Book Synopsis Swan Boats at Four by : George V. Higgins
Download or read book Swan Boats at Four written by George V. Higgins and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David and Frances are a middle-aged couple with problems - mostly David's. His bank is failing, as is his attention to the marriage. In the background there's a bank examiner named Clyde Ramsey with the moves of a bounty hunter ready to pounce." "Frances, who has decided that a change of air just might break the tension, talks David into a transatlantic crossing on a deluxe ocean liner. But it's a dangerous game she's put into play, dangling the bait (whose name is Melissa) squarely in front of her unfaithful husband. No sooner have she and David settled themselves in the first-class dining saloon than a stranger appears at their table. It's no coincidence. Their dinner companion turns out to be a charming bounder named Burton Rutledge, the sort, David says, "who if he can convince us he's got plenty of money, then there's no way we'd suspect he might be after ours."" "Slowly, inexorably, like the first-growth clarets served at table, their offshore stories unfold to breathe with life and energy, enlivened every nautical mile by vintage Higgins dialogue."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding by : Douglas Brooks
Download or read book Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding written by Douglas Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2021-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the author's apprenticeships with Japanese masters to build five unique and endangered traditional boats. It is part ethnography, part instruction, and part the personal story of a wooden boatbuilder fueled by a passion to preserve a craft tradition on the brink of extinction. Over the course of 17 trips to Japan, Douglas Brooks traveled over 30,000 miles to seek out and interview Japan's elderly master boatbuilders; he built boats with five of them, all in their seventies and eighties, between 1996 and 2010. For most of them, Brooks was their sole and last apprentice. Part I introduces significant aspects of traditional Japanese boatbuilding: design, workshop and tools, wood and materials, joinery and fastenings, propulsion, ceremonies, and the apprenticeship system. Part II details each of his five apprenticeships, concluding with a poignant chapter on Japan's sole remaining traditional shipwright. This fascinating book fills a large and long-standing gap in the literature on Japanese crafts, and will be of interest to boatbuilders, woodworkers, and all those impressed with the marvels of Japanese design and workmanship.
