Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller! An Instant Indie Bestseller! A dark, twisty modern fairytale where three sisters discover they are not exactly all that they seem and evil things really do go bump in the night. Iris Hollow and her two older sisters are unquestionably strange. Ever since they disappeared on a suburban street in Scotland as children only to return a month a later with no memory of what happened to them, odd, eerie occurrences seem to follow in their wake. And they're changing. First, their dark hair turned white. Then, their blue eyes slowly turned black. They have insatiable appetites yet never gain weight. People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous. But now, ten years later, seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow is doing all she can to fit in and graduate high school on time--something her two famously glamourous globe-trotting older sisters, Grey and Vivi, never managed to do. But when Grey goes missing without a trace, leaving behind bizarre clues as to what might have happened, Iris and Vivi are left to trace her last few days. They aren't the only ones looking for her though. As they brush against the supernatural they realize that the story they've been told about their past is unraveling and the world that returned them seemingly unharmed ten years ago, might just be calling them home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sutherland Inquiry, (HCP 62, session 2008-09, ISBN 9780102958393), is an independent inquiry remitted by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) and the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, into the delivery of the National Curriculum tests in 2008. In July 2008, 1.2 million pupils heard that their National Curriculum test results would be delayed. The test delivery service represented a failure in customer delivery service, to the pupils, schools and also the markers upon whom the National Curriculum testing regime relies. The primary responsibility must therefore rest with the American organisation, ETS Global BV (ETS), which won the public contract to deliver the tests and failed its customers. This report examines how this organisation secured the contract, what its plans were, and why its systems and process as a whole were not properly tested. The report will also describe how ETS's systems failed during the test delivery process. There was also a failure on the part of the Government's Non-Departmental Public Body, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to deliver its remit. The report also sets out the procurement process that QCA used to select its delivery supplier, ETS, and how it managed the contract. The report sets out a number of recommendations on how test delivery can improve in future years, and has set out a number of key priorities, including: that the delivery process of the National Curriculum tests should be modernised and improved, in consultation with the marking community, including piloting online marking; that whatever process is used should be thoroughly piloted and project managed to ensure schools and pupils get their results on time; that the customer service provided to markers must be vastly improved to ensure that they are properly supported and are able to access up-to-date information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Sutherland is the acknowledged father of American criminology. This is the first full-length analysis of his work and his person. Unlike the European schools of criminology, which sought to locate deviant behaviour within the deep structures of the economy, Sutherland eschewed such explanations in favour of proximate and observable causes. He located the sources of crime in the association and interaction of specific groups of people. For Sutherland, crime as a way of life results from an individual's attachment to criminals for whom criminal acts are a measure of success no less than a way of life. In a series of publications, Sutherland expanded the horizons of the classic "Chicago School" of interactionists, and in the process founded criminology as a separate area of research while locating it firmly within sociology. As the authors show, Sutherland's work was inspired by strong moral concerns and a sense of the needs of society for social order without falling prey to either blaming the victim or pandering to sentiment about the joys of criminal life. In this sense, he is a model of the sociological tradition long deserving of the biography acknowledging his role as a master and pioneer. Yet Gaylord and Galliher have written more than an intellectual biography. They take seriously the need to fit Sutherland and his "theory of differential association" into a social and historical context. They are also aware and critically straightforward about the limitations of Sutherland's work in criminology, but place both his achievements and their limitations in a fully developed analytical context.

Book excerpt: From the mid-nineteenth century until the end of World War I, the Sutherland Estate was the largest landed estate in western Europe; at 1.1 million acres, the ducal family owned almost the entire county of Sutherland as well as a further 30,000 acres in England. The estate was owned by the dukes of Sutherland, who were among the richest patrician landowners of the period; from the early nineteenth century, however, the family were shadowed by their reputation as great clearance landlords, something that would come back to haunt them throughout the coming decades
