This book was released on 1993 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Symposium reviewed the operational conditions experienced under extreme hot and cold weather. The papers presented at this Symposium highlighted recent advances in thermal physiology, clothing sciences, personal flying equipment, and microclimate cooling. Emphasis was placed on the potential applications of these advances in situations where thermal stress, or the expectation of thermal stress, may confound the efficient achievement of mission objectives.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can severely restrict the ability of aircrew and support personnel to accomplish their missions. Under emergency conditions of bail-out, ejection and ditching of fixed or rotary-wing aircraft on land or in water, the survival rate of aircrew and passengers is also affected by the intensity of thermal stress experienced and the duration of exposure to the thermal stress. This has all recently been borne out by the experience of intense air operations in the Gulf War. This symposium reviewed the operational conditions experienced under extreme hot and cold weather. The papers presented at this Symposium highlighted recent advances in thermal physiology, clothing sciences, personal flying equipment, and microclimate cooling. Emphasis was placed on the potential applications of these advances in situations where thermal stress, or the expectation of thermal stress, may confound the efficient achievement of mission objectives

This book was released on 2002 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure to heat and cold as well as the thermal stress induced by protective clothing strongly influences operational effectivity of the soldier. On 8-10 October 2001, NATO and Partner for Peace nationals met in Dresden Germany, to discuss the interaction between the climate, the clothing and equipment, and the physiology of the soldier in relation to its impact on the soldier's health and operational performance. 118 people participated in the meeting, originating from 20 countries, attending a total of 43 papers. Session topics were: 'Advances in clothing technology', 'advanced technology for heat stress mitigation', 'military benefits of physiological adaptation to heat and cold', and 'modelling monitoring and thermal limits'. A part from the military aspects also the spin-off of the research for civilians and emergency services was discussed and this was seen as an important application of the research findings. Other observed themes were: (1) The sharply increased use of manikins in clothing and threat (steam, fire) evaluation; (2) The successful development of personal cooling systems and the development of good evaluation methods; (3) The use of spacer materials in heat protection as well as for creating spacers in clothing through which air for active cooling can be provided; (4) The continued development of NBC protective clothing towards minimal heat stress; (5) The optimisation of heat and cold adaptation of soldiers before going on missions to respective areas; (6) The increase in successful use of models for prediction of heat and cold stress, survival time (hypothermia), frost bite risk, water requirements, clothing thermal performance, and for hypothesis testing in terms of the thermoregulatory system; (8) The development of new indices; for classification of physiological strain (heat and cold) and for the climate.

This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AirLand Battle is an extended, integrated battle involving all air and land forces. Conventional, nuclear, chemical, and electronic weapons are integrated to attack enemy forces throughout the depth of their formations. Basic to the AirLand Battle is the fact that modern battles will be fought by air and land forces working together. Interaction and cooperation must extend into almost every function of combat. The potential AirLand battlefield exists wherever United States forces face relatively modern, well-equipped forces using Soviet tactics and operational concepts. These forces are typified by the Warsaw Pact in Central Europe and the mechanized forces in the Middle East and Korea. The Army and Air Force must be prepared to fight and win by using all available combat power throughout every dimension of the battlefield. Combat power depends on more than troops and weapons systems. It requires the integration of communications, intelligence, and other types of combat support (CS) and combat service support (CSS). These factors may be decisive, since commanders can manipulate and control them to achieve a tactical advantage. Weather is the singled decisive factor over which commanders have little or no control. Weather may be the most significant factor considered in all combat operations. Many battles were won or lost due to the impact of weather. Some examples are the Spanish Armada, Operation Overlord, Battle of Trenton, Battle of Stalingrad, and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as Napoleon's, and Hitler's attempts to take Moscow. Although commanders have no control over weather, they can take advantage of it or minimize its effects through planning. To do so, they need support form meteorological elements operating from the tactical to the national and international levels. This manual provides weather support doctrine for combat operations. FM 100-5 describes operations and FM 34-1 describes intelligence and electronic warfare operations. The target audience includes Army and Air Force commanders and staffs. It also includes those US Air Force (USAF) weather teams (WETMs) deployed in support of Army tactical commands and echelons above corps (EAC) which provide weather data to lower echelon WETMs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of climate and extreme weather events, including high and low temperatures, drought and floods, high and damaging winds, and heavy or blowing snow have significant impacts on military operations. These impacts include increased risk to life and safety, injury, and a degrading effect on mission performance. The effects of snow are felt across a range of tasks from intelligence gathering by sensors to mobility of vehicles and personnel. A comprehensive review of the impacts of snow and weather on military operations is in progress, which will produce a geographic database of climate, extreme weather and snow impacts on military operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense operates in a challenging natural environment stretching from the surface of the earth into the far reaches of space. While the environment has beleaguered military operations for centuries, it has also provided strategic, operational, and tactical advantage to the forewarned. Sun Tzu once proclaimed, "Know the ground, know the weather; your victory will be total." Indeed, history has shown that commanders who have exploited knowledge of the environment and its effects have been rewarded with victory, while those who have ignored the environment have often met with failure.
