Book Synopsis British Short Fiction in the Early Nineteenth Century by : Tim Killick
Download or read book British Short Fiction in the Early Nineteenth Century written by Tim Killick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the importance of the idea of the 'tale' within Romantic-era literature, short fiction of the period has received little attention from critics. Contextualizing British short fiction within the broader framework of early nineteenth-century print culture, Tim Killick argues that authors and publishers sought to present short fiction in book-length volumes as a way of competing with the novel as a legitimate and prestigious genre. Beginning with an overview of the development of short fiction through the late eighteenth century and analysis of the publishing conditions for the genre, including its appearance in magazines and annuals, Killick shows how Washington Irving's hugely popular collections set the stage for British writers. Subsequent chapters consider the stories and sketches of writers as diverse as Mary Russell Mitford and James Hogg, as well as didactic short fiction by authors such as Hannah More, Maria Edgeworth, and Amelia Opie. His book makes a convincing case for the evolution of short fiction into a self-conscious, intentionally modern form, with its own techniques and imperatives, separate from those of the novel.

Book Synopsis American Nightmares by : Dale Bailey
Download or read book American Nightmares written by Dale Bailey and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Edgar Allan Poe set down the tale of the accursed House of Usher in 1839, he also laid the foundation for a literary tradition that has assumed a lasting role in American culture. “The House of Usher” and its literary progeny have not lacked for tenants in the century and a half since: writers from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Stephen King have taken rooms in the haunted houses of American fiction. Dale Bailey traces the haunted house tale from its origins in English gothic fiction to the paperback potboilers of the present, highlighting the unique significance of the house in the domestic, economic, and social ideologies of our nation. The author concludes that the haunted house has become a powerful and profoundly subversive symbol of everything that has gone nightmarishly awry in the American Dream.

Book Synopsis J. Sheridan Le Fanu by : Gary W. Crawford
Download or read book J. Sheridan Le Fanu written by Gary W. Crawford and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1995-01-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known primarily for his ghost stories and mysteries, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was one of the most popular writers of the Victorian era. Many of his works were published anonymously, and he either owned or had an interest in four Irish newspapers, which served as an outlet for other anonymous pieces by him. This bibliography provides as comprehensive a record as possible of Le Fanu's works. It also includes a bibliography of books, articles, and dissertations about him. The volume begins with a short biography of Le Fanu, followed by a bibliography of his writings. This bibliography is divided into magazine appearances, books, anthology appearances, and manuscript sources. Entries in each of these sections are arranged chronologically. Annotations comment briefly upon these primary works, and annotations for anonymous works attributed to Le Fanu include the names of those who have assigned these writings to him. The bibliography of secondary sources is also divided into several sections, with entries arranged alphabetically by author. While most annotations are descriptive, some correct erroneous information.
