Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starbursts are important features of early galaxy evolution. Many of the distant, high-redshift galaxies we are able to detect are in a starbursting phase, often apparently provoked by a violent gravitational interaction with another galaxy. In fact, if we did not know that major starbursts existed, these conference proceedings testify that we would indeed have difficulties explaining the key properties of the Universe! These conference proceedings cover starbursts from the small-scale star-forming regions in nearby galaxies to galaxy-wide events at high redshifts; one of the major themes of the conference proved to be "scalability", i.e., can we scale up the small-scale events to describe the physics on larger scales. The key outcome of this meeting – and these proceedings – is a resounding "yes" to this fundamental, yet profound question. The enhanced synergy facilitated by the collaboration among observers using cutting-edge ground and space-based facilities, theorists and modellers has made these proceedings a true reflection of the state of the art in this very rapidly evolving field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Astrophysics Updates" is intended to serve the information needs of professional astronomers and postgraduate students about areas of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology that are rich and active research spheres. Observational methods and the latest results of astronomical research are presented as well as their theoretical foundations and interrelations. The contributed commissioned articles are written by leading exponents in a format that will appeal to professional astronomers and astrophysicists who are interested in topics outside their own specific areas of research. This collection of timely reviews may also attract the interest of advanced amateur astronomers seeking scientifically rigorous coverage.

Book Synopsis New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II by : Miguel Chavez Dagostino
Download or read book New Quests in Stellar Astrophysics II written by Miguel Chavez Dagostino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an up-to-date collection of reviews and contributed articles in the field of ultraviolet astronomy. Its content has been mainly motivated by the recent access to the rest frame UV light of distant red galaxies, gained through large optical facilities. This driveway has derived in a renewed interest on the stars that presumably dominate or have important effects on the integrated UV properties of evolved systems of the nearby and faraway Universe. The topics included in this volume extend from the fresh spectroscopic analyses of high redshift early-type galaxies observed with the 8-10m class telescopes to the fundamental outcomes from various satellites, from the long-lived International Ultraviolet Explorer to current facilities, such as the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. This is one of the few volumes published in recent years devoted to UV astronomical research and the only one dedicated to the properties of evolved stellar populations at these wavelengths. This contemporary panorama will be an invaluable resource in the preparation of the next planned space missions, such as the World Space Observatory and the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope.

Download or read book Planets to Cosmology written by Mario Livio and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acknowledges the importance of identifying the most crucial science to be performed by the superb Hubble Telescope. With this goal in mind, the book presents a review of some of the most important open questions in astronomy. World experts examine topics ranging from extrasolar planets and star formation to supermassive black holes and the reionization of the universe. Special emphasis is placed on what astronomical observations should be carried out during the next few years to enable breakthroughs in our understanding of a complex and dynamic universe. In particular, the reviewers attempt to identify those topics to which the Hubble Space Telescope can uniquely contribute. The special emphasis on future research makes this book an essential resource for both professional researchers and graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics.

Book Synopsis Deep-Sky Companions: The Secret Deep by : Stephen James O'Meara
Download or read book Deep-Sky Companions: The Secret Deep written by Stephen James O'Meara and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fresh list, Stephen James O'Meara presents 109 new objects for stargazers to observe. The Secret Deep list contains many exceptional objects, including a planetary nebula whose last thermal pulse produced a circumstellar shell similar to the one expected in the final days of our Sun's life; a piece of the only supernova remnant known visible to the unaided eye; the flattest galaxy known; the largest edge-on galaxy in the heavens; the brightest quasar; and the companion star to one of the first black hole candidates ever discovered. Each object is accompanied by beautiful photographs and sketches, original finder charts, visual histories and up-to-date astrophysical information to enrich the observing experience. Featuring galaxies, clusters and nebulae not covered in other Deep-Sky Companions books, this is a wonderful addition to the series and an essential guide for any deep-sky observer.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Galaxies on Cosmological Timescales by : J. E. Beckman
Download or read book The Evolution of Galaxies on Cosmological Timescales written by J. E. Beckman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Incorporating the invited papers from the December 1998 conference, a sequel to the conference held in 1988, this volume explores theory and observations leading to greater understanding of the evolution of galaxies, bringing together information from near objects and using local information to help interpret more distant sources. Book Synopsis The Central Kpc of Starbursts and AGN by : Johan Hendrik Knapen
Download or read book The Central Kpc of Starbursts and AGN written by Johan Hendrik Knapen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Papers from a May 2001 conference on the central kpc region in AGN and starbursts examine the connection between an AGN and a starburst, the physics of star formation and non-stellar activity, and the relations between an AGN and the properties of its host galaxy. Progress in imaging technology is reported in papers on the Hubble space telescope observations, X-ray results obtained with new orbiting observatories, and imaging and spectroscopy from ground-based optical/near-infrared telescopes. Numerical simulations of gas dynamics, relationships between massive black holes and AGN activity, and attempts to quantify relations between star formation and gas disks are discussed. Annotation c.
