At least this is what Cooper believes and uses as the inspiration for this new book of stories. As each new day dawns, the sunrise provides us with memories of our past and in that way helps to shape our present and our future. After all, memories are golden drops of dew on the lawn of our lives. They are there for us to discover and to savor. Join Cooper as he remembers a life well lived and a present that is inspiring. Cooper begins another homespun and genuine revelry through life's turns. With an entertaining wit and easygoing style, he once again reminds us of life's essentials and what it means to be part of a world that still has the power to leave us speechless. As you open these pages, the sunrise is breaking through the clouds and the memories wait. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This is an examination of reminiscences of the primary leaders on both sides at the battle of Gettysburg and a comparison of these reminiscences to the historical record. Many generals presented statements written decades after the Civil War, when the Gettysburg Campaign was the topic of historical research and personal controversy. This comparative history illuminates how history is shaped as well as how the famous battle unfolded.

Book excerpt: West Medford, Massachusetts has been home to a thriving African American community, where families have lived for generations since the end of the Civil War. The stories of its residents have been fading as elders die and families move away. Most of the history of this neighborhood resides within the memories of these few remaining elders. The discovery of over one hundred funeral programs, saved and collected by residents since the mid-twentieth century, tell the stories of residents who have passed on but made countless contributions to the community. These funeral programs, along with supplemental interviews, illustrate how past residents developed community resources and used ingenuity to help create a strong neighborhood of their own. Within these pages are stories of personal perseverance and tenacity, humor and resiliency. Through portraits of individuals, West Medfords African-American neighborhood of the past is documented, through the sharing of the lives of men and women, and how they interfaced to create a solid community, despite societal and economic obstacles.

Book excerpt: This final book in the Frontier Doctor trilogy continues the story of Dane and Tharyn Logan, husband and wife medical team serving a mining community west of Denver. While caring for the physical ailments of the residents of this frontier town, the Logans also minister to their spiritual needs. And Dane has the joy of leading a Ute Indian chief and his family to faith in Christ. Dane’s biggest challenge comes, however, when the stagecoach he’s riding crashes down a ravine. Dane survives, but loses his memory. Who is he? Does he have a family somewhere? And will his trust in God help him find his way back home?THE FRONTIER DOCTOR TRILOGY Countless perils menaced the settlers of the vast wilderness, and one of the most severe was the scarcity of medical care. Risking his own life by day or by night, in all kinds of weather, the frontier doctor was a rare, unsung hero of the West. Strong Heart, Able Hands Dr. Dane Logan and his wife, Tharyn, are happily settled in Central City and considering the right time to start a family. Their medical practice in the little mining town keeps them busy with everything from new babies and appendicitis to gunshot wounds and a rancher gored by a bull. It’s almost more than one doctor can keep up with. Then when the stagecoach he’s riding in crashes down a ravine, Dane awakens with a head injury—and no idea who he is. Will his trust in God help him find his way back home? Story Behind the Book Of all the perils confronting the settlers of the Wild West, serious illness, injuries from mishaps of countless number, and wounds from battles with Indians and outlaws were the most dreaded. The lack of proper medical care resulted in thousands of deaths. It is our desire that the reader will be deeply impressed with the courage of those frontier doctors who helped settle the West. We think you’ll find this final book in this trilogy filled with our faith—gained from so many years of serving the Lord and trusting His written Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning new volume from the first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States, informed by her tribal history and connection to the land. In the early 1800s, the Mvskoke people were forcibly removed from their original lands east of the Mississippi to Indian Territory, which is now part of Oklahoma. Two hundred years later, Joy Harjo returns to her family’s lands and opens a dialogue with history. In An American Sunrise, Harjo finds blessings in the abundance of her homeland and confronts the site where her people, and other indigenous families, essentially disappeared. From her memory of her mother’s death, to her beginnings in the native rights movement, to the fresh road with her beloved, Harjo’s personal life intertwines with tribal histories to create a space for renewed beginnings. Her poems sing of beauty and survival, illuminating a spirituality that connects her to her ancestors and thrums with the quiet anger of living in the ruins of injustice. A descendent of storytellers and “one of our finest—and most complicated—poets” (Los Angeles Review of Books), Joy Harjo continues her legacy with this latest powerful collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of how to write the kanji and some way to systematize what he or she already knows. The author begins with writing because--contrary to first impressions--it is in fact the simpler of the two. He abandons the traditional method of ordering the kanji according to their frequency of use and organizes them according to their component parts or "primitive elements." Assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of "imaginative memory" to learn the various combinations that result. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji's "story," whose protagonists are the primitive elements. In this way, students are able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their pronunciation in Japanese, they are now in a much better position to learn to read (which is treated in a separate volume). Book excerpt: "REMEMBERING NGUYEN" is about my first trip to South Vietnam in the early 1960s. And just in case you were not aware, Nguyen is pronounced as "When" in Vietnamese. I personally feel that this is a damned clever play on words. The book is a chronicle of events through out that 13 months tour of duty but it is different than most other books about the Vietnam experience. "REMEMBERING NGUYEN" looks at the country, the people and the strife through a more humorous eye, or so I fervently hope. So, If you are looking for a breathtaking story of heroism and hair raising adventures, then I fear you should look elsewhere. But if you would like to know what a rather nave boy found that forced him into man hood and perhaps have a good laugh or two, then "REMEMBERING NGUYEN" is the book for you. Thanks and enjoy.
