Book excerpt: How one extraordinary pianist, scholar, and editor prepared for publication important scores by Ives, Copland, and Ruggles, and reshaped the history of American musical modernism. For over sixty years, the scholar and pianist John Kirkpatrick tirelessly promoted and championed the music of American composers. In this book, Drew Massey explores how Kirkpatrick's career as an editor of music shaped the musicand legacies of some of the great American modernists, including Aaron Copland, Ross Lee Finney, Roy Harris, Hunter Johnson, Charles Ives, Robert Palmer, and Carl Ruggles. Drawing on oral histories, interviews, and Kirkpatrick's own extensive archives, Massey carefully reconstructs Kirkpatrick's collaborations with such luminaries, displaying his editorial practice and inviting reconsideration of many of the most important debates in American modernism --for example, the self-fashioning of young composers during the 1940s, the cherished myth of Ruggles as a composer in communion with the "timeless," and Ives's status as a pioneer of modernist techniques. First winner (November 2014) of ASCAP's Virgil Thomson Award for Outstanding Music Criticism. Drew Massey is an Assistant Professor of Music at Binghamton University.

Book excerpt: In the last decade of the 19th century, modernist sensibilities reached a critical mass and emerged more frequently in music as composers began employing dissonance, polyrhythm, atonality, and densities. Conversely, many 20th-century composers eschewed modernist devices and wrote accessible works in a tonal idiom, which drew chiefly on classical, romantic, and folk models. Then the postmodern sensibility followed, with its enthusiasm for the unprecedented availability of virtually every type of music, andit engendered numerous sub-groups, including multiculturalism, minimalism, multimedia, and free improvisation. Historical Dictionary of Modern and Contemporary Classical Music focuses on modernist and postmodern classical music worldwide from 1890to the present. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, with more than 60 entries explaining the methods, styles, and acoustic and electronic media peculiar tonew music, and over 350 entries giving essential information on the lives and work of the people who have composed and performed that music. Those entries also include pop, jazz, and rock composer/musicians whose work either overlaps the realm of classical music or else is so radical within its own field that it merits discussion in this context. This book is a must for anyone, musician or non-musician, student or professional, who seeks to research and learn more about any significant aspect of modern and contemporary classical music worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Milwaukee in 1900, Otto Luening grew up in the rich musical culture of German immigrants. At the age of five he wrote his first piece of music - a "very modern" waltz. When his father, a conductor and conservatory teacher, heard it he said, "It must be discouraged, an artist's life is much too difficult in the United States." In 1912 the Luenings moved to Munich, where Otto studied flute at the Royal Academy. Soon after World War I began, Luening fled to Zurich, where he studied with the legendary Ferruccio Busoni and played in the Tonhalle Orchestra under such conductors as Richard Strauss. In Zurich he found a patron in Edith Rockefeller McCormick. He also acted in James Joyce's theater group and took part in some of the bizarre musical projects of the Dadaists. Back in America in the twenties, he worked as a pit musician in a Chicago movie theater, played vaudeville piano, and organized the American Grand Opera Company. His reputation as a composer, conductor, and performer soon earned him a position at the Eastman School of Music, and from there he went on to teach at the University of Arizona, Bennington College, and Columbia University. Luening has been a vital force in American music for many years. As the composer of Evangeline and as conductor of world premieres of Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium and Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein's The Mother of Us All, he has fostered the growth of American opera. One of the first to compose electronic music, he has also been tireless in his work as a composer and educator to alert Americans to their musical heritage. Here is the delightful story of one man's adventures in the republic of music, and his excursions to Hollywood, Tunisia, the Cologne studio of Karlheinz Stockhausen, and the Acadian towns of Nova Scotia and Louisiana, where he wrote his opera. Here also is the story of his relationships with such different personalities as Martha Graham, Harry Partch, Edgar Varese, and Carl Sandburg. A pioneer, musical roustabout, and faithful servant of his art, Otto Luening affords us through his memoirs a vivid and full picture of twentieth-century musical life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after the publication of A Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes, the distinguished critic and arts historian Richard Kostelanetz returns to his favorite subject for a third edition. Rewriting earlier entries, adding hundreds of new ones, Kostelanetz provides intelligence and information unavailable anywhere else, no less in print than online, about a wealth of subjects and individuals. Focused upon what is truly innovative and excellent, he ranges widely with insight and surprise, including appreciations of artistic athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Johan Cruyff, and the Harlem Globetrotters and such collective creations as Las Vegas and his native New York City. Continuing the traditions of cheeky high-style Dictionarysts, honoring Samuel Johnson and Nicolas Slonimsky (both with individual entries), Kostelanetz offers a "reference book" to be enjoyed not only in bits and chunks, but continuously as one of the dozen books someone would take if they planned to be stranded on a desert isle.
