A detailed commentary accompanies the Journal, based on an examination of each of the churches he visited. Full use has been made of contemporary records (including those of the Cambridge colleges) to fill out the details of Dowsing's diary entries; maps and photographs graphically illustrate the range and scale of his activities.".

Book excerpt: This books focus is on the European side of his fathers line in England and maybe France, while his mothers side is from France and Germany, and not discussed very much. Most of the content is from documents mostly in the County Suffolk, England area and the book begins with the history of this PAGE line in Normandy, France area around the year 900 to the arrival of PAGE Family C in Virginia in the middle 1600s. He published CAROLINA PAGEs in 1990 which was about his PAGE line that arrived in Virginia in middle 1600s as they moved to North Carolina, then South Carolina, then Georgia, then Florida where he was born. Since DNA arrived on the scene in early 2000, much of the paper trail has been verified. DNA has provided about 15 different PAGE lines and around 44 individuals most of which have the surname PAGE in the PAGE Line C. Photographs are provided of the many English houses that the PAGE family lived in beginning in early 1400 to date.

This book was released on 1986-02-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of one of England's principal cloth towns during the late Middle Ages. It draws extensively upon unpublished records in Colchester and elsewhere, and is the first history of a medieval English town to analyse in conjunction the relationships between overseas trade, urban development and changes in rural society. First it describes Colchester in the earlier fourteenth century, its trade, its agricultural setting and its form of government. The book then shows how cloth-making grew in Colchester after the Black Death and how the population increased until about 1414. The implications of this for the government of the borough and for the town's role in the local economy are discussed. The last section shows that Colchester's growth was not sustained through the fifteenth century, and examines some of the causal links between economic contraction, institutional change in the borough and agrarian depression in the surrounding countryside.

Book excerpt: In 1662, Amy Denny and Rose Cullender were accused of witchcraft, and, in one of the most important of such cases in England, stood trial and were hanged in Bury St Edmunds. A Trial of Witches is a complete account of this sensational trial and an analysis of the court procedures, and the larger social, cultural and political concerns of the period. In a critique of the official process, the book details how the erroneous conclusions of the trial were achieved. The authors consider the key participants in the case, including the judge and medical witness, their institutional importance, their part in the fate of the women and their future careers. Through detailed research of primary sources, the authors explore the important implications of this case for the understanding of hysteria, group mentality, social forces and the witchcraft phenomenon as a whole.

Book excerpt: "Many Americans probably know the French and Indian War by way of the film adaptation (1992) of Cooper's Last of the Mohicans. In it Michael Mann directs the young Daniel Day-Lewis and, in parts, succeeds in capturing the strange solitude of warring in endless forest and the sudden ferocity of battle during this first truly world war. Writing an unusual work of art and history, Len Travers here excavates the story of a colonial-American 'lost patrol' during that war, turning musty documents into a gripping tale that could reach well beyond an academic readership. Fifty provincial soldiers left the fringes of settlement in fall, 1756, aiming to safeguard the upper reaches of New York. Within days, near Lake George, native warriors, allies of the French, jumped them. Surprised and overwhelmed, the colonists suffered death or capture. The fifteen surviviors lived for years as prisoners of their native captors. Eventually a few of them managed to work their back to their villages and families, living to tell their stories. Travers's remarkable research brings human experiences alive, giving us a rare, full color view of the French and Indian War. These personal accounts throw light on the motives, means, and methods of both colonists and Natives at war in the American wilderness. They also speak to the nature of war itself"--
