Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill's 1869 essay The Subjection of Women argues for equality between the sexes, putting forward ideas that were an affront to many at the time. His wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, is credited with co-authoring the essay. The Subjection of Women puts forward a detailed and passionate opposition to the social and legal inequalities imposed on women by society. Mill saw that he was going against the grain of the time, but argued that such inequality was a past relic from a time when might equaled right and that it had no place in the modern world. Inequality between the sexes limited human development as it made half of humanity unable to contribute to society outside of their own homes.

Book excerpt: The Subjection of Women was written in 1861 and published eight years later. In the more than one hundred years since its publication, one of the major changes for which John Stuart Mill argued in the essay, the enfranchisement of women, has been accomplished. And yet the essay continues to be relevant and its argument significant today, since the ultimate ideal for which Mill pleaded, the establishment of 'complete equality in all legal, political, social and domestic relations' between men and women, is still far from accomplished, and the basic arguments to which Mill addressed himself still dominate discussions about the 'woman-question'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Subjection of Women is a profound and progressive work that argues for the equality of women in all aspects of society. Written in 1861 and published in 1869, Mill's essay challenges the legal and social inequalities faced by women, advocating for their complete emancipation. The work is structured as a logical argument against the societal norms and legal structures that subjugated women. Mill begins by addressing the natural differences argument, which claimed that women were naturally inferior to men. He refutes this by asserting that such beliefs are the result of social conditioning rather than inherent nature. Mill argues that women's abilities are stifled by lack of opportunity and education, and that given equal chances, they would demonstrate capabilities equal to men's. He further argues that the subordination of women is a hindrance to human progress and that society would benefit greatly from the contributions of women if they were allowed to participate equally. Mill supports his arguments with examples from history and contemporary society, demonstrating how the liberation of women leads to overall societal advancement.

Book excerpt: ▶ 19세기 영국 철학자 존 스튜어트 밀(John Stuart Mill, 1806~1873)의 수식어 중에 여성의 종속(The Subjection of Women, 1869)을 집필한 초기 페미니스트 작가(author of the early feminist work The Subjection of Women)이자 여성 참정권을 요구한 두 번째 국회의원(the second Member of Parliament to call for women's suffrage)이란 것이 있습니다. ▶ 밀의 아내 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriet Taylor Mill, 1807~1858)의 영향을 받은 밀의 대표작 여성의 종속(The Subjection of Women, 1869) : 밀은 아내 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriet Taylor Mill, 1807~1858)이 사망한 이듬해 자유론(On Liberty, 1859)을 발간하였습니다. "was more directly and literally our joint production than anything else which bears my name.‘ ‘내 이름을 딴 어떤 것보다 더 직접적이고 문자 그대로 우리의 공동 제작이었습니다.’ 여성의 종속(The Subjection of Women, 1869)은 해리엇 테일러 밀(Harriet Taylor Mill, 1807~1858)이 출간한 에세이 여성의 참정권 확보(The Enfranchisement of Women, 1851)와도 유사한 주장을 다수 포함하고 있습니다. ▶ CHAPTER I. The object of this Essay is to explain as clearly as I am able, the grounds of an opinion which I have held from the very earliest period when I had formed any opinions at all on social or political matters, and which, instead of being weakened or modified, has been constantly growing stronger by the progress of reflection and the experience of life: That the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes—the legal subordination of one sex to the other—is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other. ▶ CHAPTER II. It will be well to commence the detailed discussion of the subject by the particular branch of it to which the course of our observations has led us: the conditions which the laws of this and all other countries annex to the marriage contract. Marriage being the destination appointed by society for women, the prospect they are brought up to, and the object which it is intended should be sought by all of them, except those who are too little attractive to be chosen by any man as his companion; one might have supposed that everything would have been done to make this condition as eligible to them as possible, that they might have no cause to regret being denied the option of any other. ▶ CHAPTER III. On the other point which is involved in the just equality of women, their admissibility to all the functions and occupations hitherto retained as the monopoly of the stronger sex, I should anticipate no difficulty in convincing any one who has gone with me on the subject of the equality of women in the family. I believe that their disabilities elsewhere are only clung to in order to maintain their subordination in domestic life; because the generality of the male sex cannot yet tolerate the idea of living with an equal. (A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive, 1843) 03. 정치경제학 원리(Principles of Political Economy, 1848) 04. 자유론(On Liberty, 1859) 05. 공리주의(Utilitarianism, 1861) 06. 대의정부론(Considerations on Representative Government, 1861) 07. 여성의 종속(The Subjection of Women, 1869) 08. (The Autobiography of John Stuart Mill, 1873) 09. 종교에 대하여(Three Essays on Religion, 1874) 10. 사회주의론(Socialism, 1879) 11. 존 스튜어트 밀 선집(Collected Works of John Stuart Mill, 1963) 12. 존 스튜어트 밀를 만날 수 있는 장소 TOP20(20 Places to meet John Stuart Mill) 13. 오디오북으로 듣는 존 스튜어트 밀(Audio Books of John Stuart Mill) 14. 1869(English Classics1,157 The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill) Chapter I. Book excerpt: The Subject of Women, which Mill wrote in 1861 but did not publish until 1869, is one of the seminal texts of feminism and aroused more antagonism than anything Mill ever wrote. Conservatives predicted it would do to the English family what socialism would do to England's economy. Liberals believed that women would vote conservative. Many prominent Englishwomen, such as Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, and George Eliot, opposed women's suffrage. Even such advanced thinkers as Sigmund Freud were hostile to the book. In The Subjection of Women Mill argues with lucidity, force and more than usual metaphorical eloquence that "the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes-the legal subordination of one sex to the other-is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hindrances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality..." Mill does battle on two fronts, that of intrinsic justice and that of utility. He sees the subjection of women as not only inherently wrong, but intertwined with all the evils of existing society. In support of his central principle, Mill argues that there is no basis in nature for the inferior status of women. He likens the position of the Victorian wife to that of a domestic slave and discourses on the debasing nature of all master-slave relations. He provides historical evidence of what women are capable of achieving and he speculates upon the benefits that will accrue to society as well as individuals from female emancipation, most especially from equality in marriage, which Mill describes as the only remaining legal form of slavery. This new critical edition shows that Mill's classic work has lost none of its relevance. The cross-disciplinary approach of the book can be useful in literature, history, or sociology courses as well as womens studies.

Book excerpt: The Subjection of Women is the title of an essay written by John Stuart Mill in 1869, possibly jointly with his wife Harriet Taylor Mill, stating an argument in favour of equality between the sexes. At the time it was published in 1869, this essay was an affront to European conventional norms for the status of men and women. Mill was convinced that the moral and intellectual advancement of humankind would result in greater happiness for everybody. He argues that people should be able to vote to defend their own rights and to learn to stand on their two feet, morally and intellectually. This argument is applied to both men and women. Mill often used his position as a member of Parliament to demand the vote for women, a controversial position for the time.
