Book excerpt: W[gamma] production is analyzed in the electron and muon decay channels with approximately 1 fb−1 of data from p{bar p} collisions that were produced at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 1.96 TeV and that were collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The inclusive p{bar p} → l[nu][gamma] cross section is measured in both channels and is found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 2.08 ± 0.05{sub PDF} pb for events with a photon E{sub T} > 11 GeV, [Delta]R{sub l{sub [gamma]}} > 0.7, and {ell}[nu][gamma] transverse mass greater than 90 GeV . The observed cross section is measured to be 2.05 ± 0.18{sub stat} ± 0.10{sub sys} ± 0.13{sub lumi} pb and a.72 ± 0.19{sub stat} ± 0.15{sub sys} ± 0.10{sub lumi} pb for the electron and muon channels respectively. The photon E{sub T} spectrum is examined for indications of anomalous WW{gamma} couplings. No evidence is found, and the following one-dimensional limits are set at a 95% confidence level: -0.18

Book excerpt: Preliminary results are presented from a study of [bar p]p [yields] W[gamma] + X at [radical]s = 1800 GeV at D0 using data from its recently completed first run at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The analysis is performed in both the electron and muon channels. In each channel 10 events are observed, which, after subtracting backgrounds, agrees with the Standard Model expectation. Study of this process is a direct test of the couplings of the WW[gamma] vertex. Using a Monte Carlo calculation of the dependence of the number of expected events on these couplings, we set preliminary limits (at the 95% confidence level) on the anomalous couplings of [minus]2.5 [le] [Delta][kappa] [le] 2.7 ([gamma] = 0) and [minus]1.2 [le] [lambda] [le] 1.1 ([Delta][kappa] = 0).

Book excerpt: The OJI supported research of J. Ellison has been concentrated in two areas: study of W[gamma] and Z[gamma] production at the Tevatron, which probes the trilinear boson coupling; design, fabrication and testing of silicon microstrip detectors for the D0 upgrade silicon tracking system. The W[gamma] analysis using data from the first D0 run ([approximately]14 pb[sup[minus]1] integrated luminosity) has been completed - J. Ellison and a postdoctoral research working with him (B. Choudhary) were responsible for the muon channel analysis. This analysis is an important test of the Standard Model (SM), since it probes the nature of the WW[gamma] coupling, which is related to the W boson magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments. Any deviation from the SM value of the WW[gamma] coupling would be an indication of either composite structure of the W or higher order loop corrections involving physics beyond the SM. The analysis has resulted in the world's most sensitive limits on the WW[gamma] coupling parameters. In addition the author has also worked on an analysis of Z[gamma] production which has yielded sensitive limits on the ZZ[gamma] and Z[gamma][gamma] couplings. The work on the D0 Silicon Tracker has also made very good progress. The team led by J. Ellison includes two postdoctoral researchers (A. Bischoff and C. Boswell), one graduate student (M. Mason) and three undergraduate students. They have fully evaluated proptotype detectors which were designed at UCR and have completed a detailed simulation study of the detector performance for different strip geometries. The results were used to optimize the design of the final D0 detectors, for which UR has sole responsibility. The author has completed the mask design for the 3-chip barrel detectors and production of the final detectors as now begun.
