Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of the English Bible The following pages embody the results of an earnest attempt to apply the elementary principles of the study-process as ordinarily understood to the English Bible. The book is nothing more and nothing else than this. The explanation and justification of a discussion so rigidly confined to the sphere of method, are to be sought in the peculiar situation in which we find ourselves. In view of this situation it is offered without misgiving or apology. It is generally conceded that we have fallen upon evil days as regards the popular knowledge and use of the Bible. In many respects our greatest book is as much lost to the people as in the days preceding the discovery of the "book of the law" in the reign of Josiah. The most serious element in this painful situation is that it is really without excuse. The progressive loss of popular interest in the Bible has proceeded coincidently with general advance in popular education, and, specifically, in Biblical Science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Books: A Study of the Bible The modest aim of this book is that of setting forth a. Point of view; and the writer has tried to avoid the appearance of an erudition which he cannot claim. Much of his matter, especially for Chapters II and IX, has been derived of necessity at second-hand, though always, he hopes, from trustworthy sources. But he has endeavoured to work as far as possible with no book except the Bible before him, and to burden the pages with few references except those indicating the scriptural passages concerned. For the point of View which he fain would bring before the reader is that of one who, with instincts preponderatingly traditional, practical, and devotional, has allowed the leaven of the 'new Learn ing' to work in his mind, believing that there is much that is true in it, and that all truth comes down from the 'father of Lights.' His endeavour is, in fact, to show, with as little technicality as possible, what the Bible, in its manifold aspects, looks like to-day to one who, for many years, has turned over its pages, and has, never lost, with changing times, his first love and reverence for its teachings. Thousands of men have doubtless read the Bible more than I, but simple reading is of very little consequence since to read and to examine are such different things. Many men can repeat scripture by the yard, who cannot, or do not, examine it by the inch. A parrot can repeat what it has heard, but never constructs new sentences from new thoughts, and this is the manner of most Bible study. The next method is a study for a specific purpose (but not the true pur pose), or to fortify some creed. The Baptist has his special line of thought to demonstrate as the. Bible study to many people is a dreary business. It seems far away from the com mon vital interests of humanity. Those who have made any thoroughgoing study of the Bible, however, know that it takes hold upon the realities, the common tasks, and the deep human loyalties in which men and women live and move and have their being. Should not, therefore, the Christian Scrip tures, both through courses of study and methods of organization, be treated natu rally, scholarly, sensibly, practically, and always in relation to real life and conduct? Modern scholarship is ministering greatly to the study of the Scriptures; it is helping to make the Bible real, not by making it less divine, but more human, more intelligent, preface more capable of sustaining faith In the liv ing God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociological Study of the Bible This book is an evolutionary study of Christendom. Although it largely takes the form of research into ancient history, it is in substance an inquiry into vital questions of today. Owing to the recent separation of Church and State, there is a tendency to take for granted that religion deals only with matters of belief about things that have no concern for "practical" persons, or that it relates only to private, individual affairs. Hence the need for pointing out that the vital religious ideas of Christian society took shape in response to a social pressure as tremendous and compelling as that in which we live today. The present social revival of the church is part of a wider awakening which extends beyond the limits of religious institutions, and which has already put its deep mark on the age. Although every period of history has its own difficulties, there are times in which the social problem bids for attention more acutely and insistently than at others; and the present seems to be such a time. The purpose of this book is to state, as clearly and simply as possible, the relation of the Bible to the social problem. The title Sociological Study of the Bible seems to carry much of its own explanation with it. But the term "sociology" is a new one; and some prefatory statement of the general drift of the treatise will therefore be of more than usual assistance to the reader. In the first place, this book takes the standpoint of what is called "pure science." It seeks to know the historical facts of the subject before it, and to interpret these facts in their actual, historical connections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification.
