Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the many benefits of applying mass spectrometry to supramolecular chemistry Except as a method for the most basic measurements, mass spectrometry (MS) has long been considered incompatible with supramolecular chemistry. Yet, with today's methods, the disconnect between these two fields is not warranted. Mass Spectrometry and Gas-Phase Chemistry of Non-Covalent Complexes provides a convincing look at how modern MS techniques offer supramolecular chemists a powerful investigatory toolset. Bringing the two fields together in an interdisciplinary manner, this reference details the many different topics associated with the study of non-covalent complexes in the gas phase. The text begins with brief introductions to supramolecular chemistry and such relevant mass spectrometric methods as ionization techniques, analyzers, and tandem MS experiments. The coverage continues with: How the analyte's transition into the gas phase changes covalent bonding How limitations and pitfalls in analytical methods may produce data misinterpretations Artificial supramolecular aggregates and their examination Biomolecules, their complexes, and their examination After the general remarks making up the first section of the book, the following sections describe specific experimental procedures and are illustrated with numerous examples and short tutorials. Detailed citations end each chapter. Mass spectrometrists, supramolecular chemists, students in these fields, and interested readers from other disciplines involving the study of non-covalent bonds will all value Mass Spectrometry and Gas-Phase Chemistry of Non-Covalent Complexes as an innovative and practical resource.

Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled New Methods for the Study of Molecular Aggregates was held at Tbe Lodge at Kananaskis Village, Alberta, Canada from 16 -20 June 1996. In fact the meeting was entirely concerned with the problem of analyzing biomolecular complexes, so the title of these proceedings has been altered to give a more precise description of the content. Tbe workshop was hosted by the time-of-flight group of the Department of Physics at the University of Manitoba, and was attended by 64 participants from around the world. '!\venty-one invited talks were given and 27 papers were presented as posters. Of the 48 contributions, 22 papers (12 orals, 10 posters) are included in these proceedings. Tbe subject of the conference was the investigation of noncovalent biomolecular complexes, with particular focus on the application of mass spectrometry to their characterization. '!\vo new ionization techniques introduced in the late 1980s, electrospray ionization (ES I) and matrix-assisted laser desorptionlionization (MALDI), resulted in a breakthrough in mass spectrometry, enabling its use in molecular weight and primary structure determination of biopolymers larger than 100 kDa. Recently it has been discovered that ESI mass spectrometry mayaiso be used to characterize complexes containing noncovalent interactions, thus opening new perspectives for supramolecular chemistry. ESI mass spectrometry has the advantage that the sampie is introduced from a homogenous solution which can be maintained at near physiological conditions of pR, concentration, and temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the substantial increase in popularity of quadrupole ion traps and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation explores the historical origins of the latest advances in this expanding field. It covers new methods for trapping ions, such as the OrbitrapTM, the digital ion trap (DIT), the rectilinear ion trap (RIT), and the toroidal ion trap; the development and application of the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the quadrupole linear ion trap (LIT); and the introduction of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS). After a combined appreciation and historical survey of mass spectrometry and a discussion of how improved capabilities for microfabrication have led to interest in arrays of ion traps, the book examines the theory and practice of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, the rectangular waveform-driven DIT mass spectrometer, FAIMS, and ion traps with circular geometries. It next discusses ion accumulation for increasing sensitivity in FT-ICR spectrometry, a radio frequency-only-mode event for Penning traps in FT MS, and an FT operating mode applied to a 3D-QIT. The text then presents three behavioral aspects of quadrupole rod sets, before illustrating the development of the 3D-QIT in recent years. The final chapters explore photodissociation in ion traps and the chemical and photochemical studies of metal dication complexes in a 3D-QIT. In this volume that spans twenty-one chapters, a stellar panel of leading experts and up-and-coming researchers presents a cohesive, global, and up-to-date view of the practical aspects of using trapped ion devices. A companion to Volume V: Applications of Ion Trapping Devices, the book authoritatively covers the theory involved as well as the instrumentation currently used in this dynamic field.

Book excerpt: Spectroscopy and Modeling of Biomolecular Building Blocks presents an overview of recent advances in the intertwining of the following research fields: photon and electron spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, modelling and mass-spectrometry. The coupling of these disciplines offers a new point of view to the understanding of isolated elementary building blocks of biomolecules and their assemblies. It allows the unambiguous separation between intrinsic properties of biomolecular systems and those induced by the presence of their environment. The first chapters provide background in modelling (I), frequency-resolved spectroscopy using microwave, infrared and UV photons, time-resolved spectroscopy in the femtosecond domain and energy-resolved electron spectroscopy (II) and production of gas-phase neutral and ionic biomolecular species, mass-spectrometry, ion mobility and BIRD techniques (III). Chapter IV is devoted to case studies of gas-phase experimental investigations coupled to quantum or classical calculations. The topics are structural studies of nucleobases and oligonucleotides, peptides and proteins, sugars; neuromolecules; non-covalent complexes; chiral systems, interactions of low-energy electrons with biomolecules in the radiation chemistry context and very large gas-phase biomolecular systems. The fifth chapter concerns the link between gas-phase and liquid-phase. Different treatments of solvation are illustrated through examples pointing out the influence of progressive addition of water molecules upon properties of nucleobases, peptides, sugars and neuromolecules. - Offer a new perspective to the understanding of isolated elementary building blocks of bio molecules - Includes case studies of experimental investigations coupled to quantum or classical calculations

Book excerpt: By delivering concentrated information in three different volumes, the editors of the Practical Aspects of Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry mini-series present in-depth reviews on mainstream developments in each active and popular area. Contributing authors provide concise reports illustrating successful approaches to difficult analytical problems across the basic scientific disciplines. Volume three, Chemical, Environmental, and Biomedical Applications, presents a coherent picture of research and applications in the ion trapping field. It examines tandem mass spectrometry, the principal mode of ion trap operation, where one stage of mass selectivity follows another in the same region of space. This volume discusses the fundamentals of ion trap theory, design, and operation; practical ion trap technology; applications involving small molecules; and the environmental and biomedical applications.
