Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Medicine, Vol. 3 The numerous and complicated train of diseases, we are now entering upon, appertains to the highest function of visible beings: the possession of which emphatically distinguishes animals from plants, and the perfection of which as emphatically distinguishes man from all other animals: these are the diseases of the nervous function; - which, in the sphere of its activity, embraces the powers of intellect, sensation, and muscular motion. Each of these powers evinces diseases of its own, and will consequently lay a foundation for a distinct order, under the class before us. While, as there are also other diseases that affect several of them simultaneously, we become furnished with a fourth order, which will complete the series. All these diversities of vital energy are now well known to be dependent on the organ of the brain, as the instrument of the intellectual powers, and the source of the sensific and motory. Though, from the close connection and synchronous action of various other organs with the brain, and especially the thoracic and abdominal viscera, such diversities were often referred to several of the latter in earlier ages, and before anatomy had traced them satisfactorily to the brain as their fountain-head. And of so high an antiquity is this erroneous hypothesis, that it has not only spread itself through every climate on the globe, but still keeps a hold on the colloquial language of every people; and hence the heart, the liver, the spleen, the reins, and the bowels, generally, are, among all nations, regarded, either literally or figuratively, as so many seats of mental faculties or moral feeling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Medicine The volume was entitled Introduction to the Study of Medicine; but, in reality, it is far more than that. The several chapters on Evolution of Diseases, Examination of the Sick, Clinical Application of Scientific Procedures, Diagnosis and Prognosis, and Therapeutics, covering two hundred pages, are of a character to engage the attention even of practitioners of considerable experience. I was not surprised, therefore, when some of our clinicians of the highest reputation wrote to me of the profound interest with which they had perused this translation of Roger's work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Medicine, Vol. 1 of 2 In fulfilling his duty, the Editor has attempted to divest himself of iocal feelings; to consider the physicians of the United States as belonging to one family; to be just to all; and to present the results of their experi ence with fairness. How far he has succeeded, may be seen by referring to the notes marked with the letter D., for which he alone is accountable. The desire, -however, of printing the new edition in such a fqrmas to place it within the reach of every one, and the constant inquiries for the book, which, to speak technically, has been oat of print for many months, obliged the publishers to limit the Editor both as to space and time. This fact will account for the brevity with which many important topics hai'e been treated, and also for some omissions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Science, Vol. 3: Abstracts Reviews, October 1920 Aetiology. In an article on the specificity of acute articular rheumatism, Grenet reports having observed outbreaks of five distinct epidemics among soldiers within a limited area. The disease occurred within a zone of trenches occupied by certain regiments and also appeared in their rest camps, where they came in contact with second line troops who became infected in their turn. The immunity of a regiment after occupying the former cantonment of another regiment in which cases had occurred tended to show that contamination was not caused by the soil or by the quarters, but by direct contact. Further evidence of the contagious character of acute rheumatism is afforded by Grenet in the history of the following case. A man who had hitherto escaped rheumatism, but belonged to a regiment in which an outbreak had occurred, was suddenly separated from it and admitted to a hospital for a wound. Twenty-six days after admission he had a definite attack of acute rheumatism, and six days later two wounded soldiers occupying adjacent beds had similar attacks. While admitting that the contagiousness of acute rheumatism is of slight degree, so that it usually escapes notice, Grenet points out that it is an argument of the highest value in favour of the specificity of the disease. Frauenthal declares that teeth and gums as sources of infection in rheumatism are overestimated, and that much harm is done by the promiscuous extraction of teeth owing to the incompetent interpretation of X-rays. Any acute or chronic infection of the gastro-intestinal canal, genito-urinary tract, or respiratory system may give rise to an acute or chronic inflammation of the joints. According to Lambert, the percentage of acute rheumatism among the total admissions to the Bellevue Hospital, New York, has steadily diminished from 1907, when it was 2.45, to 1919, when it was 0.521. He regards dental hygiene more than any other one factor as responsible for this diminution, and thinks it probable that tonsillectomy is also in part a factor. Symptomatology. In a series of 73 cases of rheumatic fever in soldiers, studied by White at U.S. Base Hospital No. 6, 51 per cent, gave a previous history of rheumatic fever, and 40 per cent, showed large or ragged tonsils. The joints involved in order of frequency were knee, ankle, shoulder, wrist, foot, elbow, hand, and hip. Acute pericarditis, which was usually very transient, was found in 10 per cent., and acute pleurisy in 19 per cent. There was evidence of mitral endocarditis in 40 per cent., and of combined mitral and aortic endocarditis in 8 per cent. Most of these cases were apparently of long standing. Acute temporary heart-block was found in 4 per cent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Some of them even lack the very semblance of any support. Many cases of beriberi occur in well-nourished strong individuals, and the blood examination in acute or recent cases shows neither pernicious anaemia nor any anaemia at all. The author has examined the blood in a number of acute and chronic cases and has found no characteristic blood changes, although the cases of longer standing may show a varying degree of secondary anaemia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medicine, 1924, Vol. 3: Analytical Reviews of General Medicine, Neurology and Pediatrics The foundations of our modern knowledge of the processes involved in the production of animal heat were laid by Lavoisier when he discovered that the amount of ice melted by a guinea-pig parallels the amount of carbon dioxide given Ofi by the animal. He drew the analogy between the emission of heat, the absorption of oxygen and the production of carbon dioxide by a burning candle and by a living animal, and recognized the identity of the processes involved. The plan was broadly conceived by Lavoisier and the foundations firmly laid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
