Collateral Circulation.--(1) The deep epigastric branch anastomosing with the terminal branches of the internal mammary and aortic intercostals; (2) The circumflex iliac branch, and the ilio-lumbar branch from the internal iliac, anastomosing with the lower intercostals and lumbar branches of the aorta; (3) The gluteal artery from internal iliac anastomosing with the external circumflex branch of the profunda femoris; (4) The sciatic artery from internal iliac anastomosing with the internal circumflex branch of the profunda; (5) The obturator artery from internal iliac anastomosing with the internal circumflex branch of the profunda. Gastrotomy.--This operation may be rendered necessary in consequence of impermeable stricture of the oesophagus, to prevent the patient dying of starvation. There are three varieties of stricture--(1) The nervous or spasmodic--this form is usually intermittent, and if the patient can be induced to forget about it for the time being, the food passes quite easily; (2) Fibrous stricture, the result of swallowing corrosive fluids--this form may be dilated by passing bougies; (3) Cancerous--this is the most common form. The bougie seems to pass over a roughened surface, and its introduction is followed by the coughing up of blood, or blood and pus; the cervical glands will also probably be enlarged, and other signs of the "cancerous cachexia present." By these means it may be diagnosed from fibrous stricture, and this will also be assisted by the history of the case. As long as possible the patient may be fed with slops, or through a catheter, or by the use of artificially digested foods per rectum, and if these are not...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to Surgical Anatomy: Being a Description of the Most Important Surgical Regions of the Human Body and Intended as an Introduction to Operative Surgery A considerable experience as a teacher has convinced me that there is a room for a small work on what might be termed Applied Anatomy. With the exception of my friend Mr. Galton's translation of Professor Roser's work, there is no English handbook of the kind within the reach of the generality of students. Pupils are apt to lay aside their anatomical studies after having passed their primary examination, and to be confused at finding a considerable amount of Surgical Anatomy required of them when they present themselves for their final or pass. With a view of assisting them, this work has been prepared. A knowledge of Descriptive Anatomy is presupposed, and such regions of the body as do not seem to bear directly upon the operative or more practical parts of Surgery, have been either merely referred to or entirely omitted. Book excerpt: This new book is designed to facilitate the comparison between normal and abnormal anatomy, both on the surface and (by the use of radiologic imaging) within the body. GENERAL SURGICAL ANATOMY AND EXAMINATION explores the common problems that a surgeon may encounter and detect not only by radiologic imaging, but also by seeing, hearing, and feeling. Using a series of color photographs and radiologic images (many with interpretive line drawings and overlays to show normal and abnormal instances), the book illustrates how anatomy, clinical history, and examination can be used to point at the diagnosis in patients with surgical conditions. The text is short yet comprehensive and is closely linked to the visual presentation of the surgical disease.

In the professional education of young surgeons, anatomy remains an enormously important subject. Although surgical training in the United Kingdom is currently undergoing a radical change, the basic sciences elements of the postgraduate clinical training must be retained. This book therefore has been written primarily to cover the fundamentals of applied anatomy relevant to the surgical training programme. Whilst 'Applied Surgical Anatomy' is intended primarily for surgeons, it is hoped that it will also be useful for those taking professional examinations in other aspect of medicine.
