Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to the Practice of Medicine IN this Edition I have endeavoured to supplement the two previous Editions by additional details on important points, and to insert an account of some diseases formerly omitted. By using smaller type I have been enabled to do this without materially increasing the size of the book or altering the original plan. I trust it is still handy and practical. I have to record my best thanks to Dr. Alexander Napier for valuable suggestions given to me, and for assisting me in seeing the work through the press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Handbook for Practitioners and Students What is health The answer to this inquiry can scarcely be given in the form of a definition, yet it requires no medical education to suggest a picture of what health is at the typical eras of human existence, when all the various functions of the human body are performed easily, naturally, and well. The healthy individual breathes without. Difficulty, the food taken is relished and properly assimilated, the blood is forced from its centre - the heart - onwards over the body, without valvular flaw or subsequent hindrance, and the brain, with its nervous expansion undisturbed by morbid fancies, controls the movements and the thoughts of the living organism. Disease is a devia tion, to a greater or less extent, from what we thus realize, though we cannot define, as the standard Of health. It may invade one or more Of the systems we have alluded to, and it is the duty Of the physi eian to find out, by the varied appliances Of his art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Principles and Practice of Medicine: For the Use of Medical Students and Practitioners IN this volume I have endeavored to present, in addition to the fruits of my own observation and experience, the substance of the latest editions of the works of Ziegler, Hallopeau, Eichhorst, Cornil, and Babes, and of the collaborators of the Traité de Médecine. In order to secure the greatest possible brevity, matters of an historical and controversial nature have been omitted, and every effort has been made to exclude whatever is not absolutely essential for the information of the student. Numerous interesting topics have accordingly received but brief notice. It has seemed best to aim at the construction of a definite framework which the future physician can clothe with the results of subsequent reading and observation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Text-Book for Practitioners and Students, With Special Reference to Diagnosis and Treatment I have no apology to make for preparing this book. I have long contemplated it, and have finished it after several years' labor. It has taken some time, because it represents almost purely personal work, which has been frequently interrupted. It does not pretend to be based on my personal practice only. In these days of specialized work this would be impossible, though with most of even the rare forms of disease in every section I have had some experience. To fill in the gaps of my own knowledge I have used that of others, but have always sought to make suitable acknowledgment to the proper source, and if this has not been done in any case, it has been a matter of oversight. I had not, at the outset, expected to illustrate the work, but, as it progressed, a certain number of illustrations seemed necessary, not only to explain the text, but also, in a few instances, to render clearer the treatment described. Thus the number of charts and other drawings has grown to nearly a hundred, all of which, it is hoped, will be found useful. In expectation of the ultimate adoption of the metric system for the measuring of doses, these have been indicated throughout the book in the metric and English measures. Acknowledgment is due to Dr. Joseph P. Walsh and Mr. M. A. Morin for suggestions after reading the text, to Dr. William Schleif for material assistance in Section XV, and to my son, Dr. T. Mellor Tyson, for assistance throughout the work and especially in preparing the index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine I do not, indeed, mean to imply that others have not pre ceded me in the same course, and with distinguished success. The profound and philosophical Outlines of Pathology and Practice of Medicine, of Dr. Alison; the elaborate work on the Principles of Medicine, of Dr. Williams; the eloquent as well as logical and scientific lectures of Dr. Watson and the unfortunately as yet unfinished work of Doctors Bright and Addison, on the Elements of Medicine, are more than sufficient evidence to the contrary. Without, however, in the slightest degree, detracting from the merits of these and similar works; it is, I believe, admitted that we are at present in need of a hand-book for students.
